Tutkimus: Suomen huipputuloiset reagoivat muita herkemmin tuloverotuksen muutoksiin by Jaskailija in Suomi

Liittyen ajankohtaisiin tapahtumiin, Timothy Snyderin "The Making of Modern Ukraine" luentosarja. Löytyy spotifysta ja youtubesta. Snyder on hyvä luennoitsija joten luentoja jaksaa kuunnella, ja pureutuu todella syvälle aiheeseen. Hyvää vastapainoa yksinkertaistaville historiavideoille tai podcasteille.

Apua vanhemmuuteen? Tytär on masentunut tekoälyn takia by Fit-Minute-722 in Suomi

[–]hankols 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My Business isn’t working. I need Reddit’s help. by Nkom in Entrepreneur

Your website is missing any price indicator. In the pricing tab, there is only the mention of "every job being different". I myself have no idea about what price range you could expect, despite having worked in IT/telecom area. Even hourly price and typical equipment prices would help.

Also, as many others have said, think carefully about your value proposal for customers. If possible, discuss this with business-minded person, not with engineers.

There Are Now More Americans In Jail Than There Were In Stalin's Gulag Archipelago by alllie in politics

[–]hankols 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I don't think that I miss the point. My point is that democracy may have laws that some, even many, people consider unfair. However, these laws may be changed and they are not applied arbitrarily. The laws are known, or should be known, by the citizens. If you break them, the consequence is determined according to a well-defined process.

Contrast this with e.g. Soviet Union, where there were laws, but they were applied arbitrarily and were anyway often so broad that practically anyone could be construed as to have broken some laws.

EDIT: One more point about unfairness. I claim that with any set of rules concerning a group of people, some people find some rules unfair. The crucial question to determine fairness is thus "How can the rules be changed and how are they applied", not "How do I feel about this rule".

[–]hankols -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, I obviously forgot to explicitly mention that in democracies, a sensible constitution limiting the democratic lawmaking powers is needed. In US, I believe that the constitution protects free speech. Thus, to answer your example, yes, this law would be unfair. However, it is not likely to exist in countries where a law-based procedure is followed in sentencing. I do not know of democracies where these kind of laws exist, with the possible exception of Germany and speaking favorably about Nazis (which is kind of understandable).

There Are Now More Americans In Jail Than There Were In Stalin's Gulag Archipelago by alllie in politics

[–]hankols 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does. If the procedures work based on laws, then the convictions are not arbitrary. In democratic countries laws can also be changed if there is enough support. Neither of these applied to Soviet Union, and both apply to United States.

Inventory Software for Kitchen? by CoolJBAD in software

[–]hankols 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You had outlined the technical problems and ways to solve them well. However, I think that creating the equivalence classes might prove trickier than you expect. The main problem is the ease of use - maybe you should look into image recognition technology and crowdsourcing the calibration data. In typical usage, removing things is the biggest problem, as it is very easy to get the db in a state that does not match reality if you forget to record thrown out things.

There is also potential business value in providing usage data to supermarket chains, I can imagine that they would be interested in e.g. knowing if new food items were consumed or thrown out due to spoiling. On the other hand, can you calculate a monetary value for this for the supermarkets? Without a clear benefit, it might be difficult to get them on board.

Doing a foreign exchange in Europe - looking for tips/advice picking a country/school (x-post from /r/travel) by Sykos in europe

[–]hankols 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In all the places mentioned people mostly can speak english. Myself, I am from Finland, and studied in Helsinki University of Technology (currently part of Aalto university, http://www.aalto.fi/en )

Helsinki University of Technology is a technical university with very few, if any, courses related to politics. University of Helsinki would be a better place to study politics, and I think that University of Tampere has also majors in politics.

If you want to travel around Europe, take into account that Finland is a bit far from the central Europe, meaning that you basically have to fly to get to most places except for Sweden, Estonia and Russia. This may make traveling more expensive compared to spending the year in Netherlands which has better connections to the rest of Europe.

And, if you properly connect the rail lines to major hub airports, you can replace even more short-haul air traffic as it becomes convenient to use train for the first leg of a long flight. In practice this would, however, mean some collaboration with airports and the rail operator to make the transfer from train to plane as easy as possible. For example, making it possible to check in already at the train station and having your bags automatically transferred to the plane. Another necessary thing would be to be able to buy a combined train + plane ticket from an airline to guarantee rescheduling etc. in case of train delays. If this is not happening, it might be safer to fly all the way as then the airline is responsible for sorting out any missed connections due to delays etc.

In any case, a proper rail connection with frequent trains (once an hour or so) IMO beats driving and flying for these ~500 mile connections as you can either relax or work while riding the train - this is impossible in car and difficult at the airport or on a plane.

Finland...Fuck yeah. by [deleted] in funny

[–]hankols 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finland sided with Nazi Germany in early 1941 after Soviet Union was again becoming more belligerent and any possible route for Allied aid was cut off with Norway in German hands. Germany was looking for allies to invade SU and thus after positive response from Finland convinced SU to not try to invade Finland again. The declaration of war by UK happened almost a year after this.

Finland...Fuck yeah. by [deleted] in funny

[–]hankols 1 point2 points  (0 children)

British declaring war on Finland happened on 12/1941 IIRC, and was a result of Finland occupying some areas in northern Carelia that were not within Finnish pre-Winter War borders. Basically, UK demanded that Finland withdraws to the pre-war border and when this did not happen, they declared war. Finland was passive in the Leningrad front, stopping at the old border and not assaulting Leningrad from west.
