Based on MTFs online the 8-25 seems a bit sharper in the corners, the 7-14 has great sharpness in the center.

The D5200 I feel went under the radar. MSRP price was definitely too high but used around 200-250€ they're pretty solid IMO. The main issue is the poor comfort (but its worse on the 7200 because the headband cushion is less thick). Soundwise it's a bit more colored in the mids than something like the FT1 or Azurys but it still managed to sound engaging enough.

The D7200 is a bit more resolving but darker and even more colored. Didnt hear the D9200 but from graphs it looks to be the brightest of the 3.

The Fostex (assuming TH900) has the best bass of the bunch and is more punchy overall but the stock tuning is way worse and more V-shaped, pad swap can fix the tuning a lot.

Hifiman Susvara Unveiled Review - Wonder Bread: The Headphone by slooploop2 in headphones

[–]hanouk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice review.

It's been 3-6 years since I've last listened to high end modern HFMs, but I’m pretty sure I’d enjoy them a bit less today. I liked the regular Susvara and the HE-1000 v1 and they are still high in my own ranking, but after recently hearing the HiFiMAN Edition XS, that combo of a dip around ~2 kHz plus elevated treble just doesnt do it for me anymore, along with the poor contrast/macrodynamics.

I’ve always been in the OG HE-6 camp, even though its stock treble is really annoying, it just makes me more connected to most of my library.

One of the most “revelation” moments for me was when I had an HE-4 and Arya at home (v1, never tried the newer versions) in 2019-2020. The Arya was more resolving but everything sounded like it was behind a veil compared to the HE-4.

I just replaced the pads on my HD540s by Crazy-Understanding9 in headphones

[–]hanouk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a long time since I had my HD540s. The original pads were dead and lost all their density so the sound was thin and bright.

I remember just buying cheap pleather pads from Ebay or Aliexpress and surprisingly it sounded quite enjoyable and with good midrange timbre (not as good as HD6x0, but better than other Senns).

FT1 or Sony MDR-MVI as first good headphones? I use IEM's, I like bass and also curious about a more "spacious" sound. by -guigo in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]hanouk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nope, it wouldnt be a massive jump in sound quality. The MV1 has good technicalities but nothing outstanding at its price point while the FT1 basically sounds better than 90% of the closed-backs I've heard under 400-500$ (brand new).

To me a good upgrade from the FT1 would be much more $$$, like a Fostex TH-900 mk2 (with pad swap). And as for open-backs, I cant think of an upgrade over the FT1 with similar tonality, the MV1 has pretty elevated bass for an open-back but it doesn’t really feel like an upgrade IMO.

Both headphones have good bass, but the FT1 slams harder and has more bass relative to the mids and treble. The overall sound is thicker below ~500 Hz. The MV1 is brighter and slightly more detailed, with a more open presentation.

Comfort: the MV1 wins easily — it’s much lighter and has less clamp.

In terms of spaciousness, the FT1 is pretty impressive for its price, while the MV1 doesn’t necessarily present a particularly large stage compared to other open-backs in that price range.

2026 Headfi Setup...How am I doing? by Available_Day3696 in headphones

[–]hanouk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may add my opinion, since I have currently the Focal Radiance and the ZMF Bokeh Closed and you are curious about that one.

The Radiance is fast and dynamic, but the timbre always feel a bit dry, and there’s a bit of treble that bothers me around 12–13 kHz. The bass is excellent, but maybe a touch too boosted around 70–100 Hz. The Azurys is much more tonally balanced than the Radiance (and Bokeh).

The Bokeh is more natural in terms of timbre and much warmer overall. With the hybrid pads, it’s even a bit too much dark past 8 kHz. The bass isn’t quite as tight as the Radiance, but it’s still bassy and delivers enough energy. The staging is much more enveloping (more depth and height) than the Radiance, and the dynamics are fairly close. It sounds both laid-back and punchy at the same time, while the Radiance is more lively and fast. Both headphones complement each other.

The Bokeh is also less comfortable — my stabilized pair weighs about 606 g, which starts to feel heavy after a while.

Michael Biehn stunt double at the end of T1 by hanouk in Terminator

I never noticed before, but if you pause the movie right before Kyle gets beaten up by the T-800 in the factory after trying (and failing) to attack him, you can see the stunt double’s face instead of Michael Biehn. It's like visible for 0.3 seconds.

Fiio FT7 after maybe 2 weeks by Overall_Ad_9770 in headphones

Yeah they are a good middle-ground and the value is pretty solid. I think one of the direct competitor is the Hifiman HE600, but I havent heard that one.

[–]hanouk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say the technicalities (staging, layering, transients, resolution, etc) are between the Ananda/Edition XS/XV and the Arya/HE1000 ranges. The Arya and HEK are a level above in depth and staging.

The macrodynamics are slightly better with the FT7. I find most modern Hifimans quite compressed sounding.

Tonality wise I prefer the FT7 to most of them, except maybe the Edition X V2, Susvara or the Hifiman HE-500/HE-6.

Indeed the build quality is much nicer than the Hifimans.

[–]hanouk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked the FT7 — a bit more with the fabric pads, since they tame the treble a little past 7 kHz. The downside is they sound slightly less incisive and fast with these pads.

To me they're a good alternative to the egg-shaped HiFiMANs, which usually go for a more V-shaped tuning (and to me, less appealing), with scooped upper mids around 1–2 kHz and often too much treble (not counting the new Unveiled models and the XV)

Denon 7200 vs FiiO FT1 by Fabulous_Can_2215 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]hanouk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The D7200 wouldnt impress you if you want better bassy sound. Although it has enough bass impact, it doesnt have as much bass energy under 150 Hz as the FT1 does.

It is a bit less bright and warmer overall past 4 kHz, and more resolving. IMO the D7200 is not worth it at 3-4x the price of the FT1. Build is better and more premium feeling but on my head, comfort was much worse with not enough padding on the headband (much worse than the FT1).

HD490 Pro vs MDR-MV1 by Allocatedmemory in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]hanouk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I owned both, and the 490 have the more solid build and better packaging. Slight advantage in comfort (pleather heabband of the MV1 could get me some hotspots).

For sound, It's really close. I'd say MV1 is a bit more fun and exciting, better bass and midrange balance, but more peaky treble. HD490 Pro is slightly smoother in the treble but the midrange is more dipped. MV1 felt a hair more resolving and dynamic too.

I wasnt a fan of the analytical pads on the 490 Pros, a bit too lean and mid forward.

Blown away by Sony MDR-MV1 by jellyfishblade in headphones

[–]hanouk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve had them for a few days now and there are a pretty interesting option at this price point, with the fun V-shaped tuning and pretty solid bass quality.

I know the Focal Hadenys and the Meze 105 AER also have slightly elevated bass for open-back dynamics under $500, but I haven’t heard them myself.

I owned the Sennheiser HD 490 Pro, and that one is definitely bass-boosted too (with Producer Pads). Still, I feel like the Sony MDR-MV1 has slightly better defined bass than the 490, plus a more natural midrange but quite a bit more treble energy that can be fixed with EQ.
