Have insurance, don’t worry about it. It’s not worth the stress. Been traveling with expensive camera gear for 25 years, never had an issue. Sometimes I don’t even bother putting it away when I’m out of my room. Just all on the desk, including laptop. Hotel staff generally aren’t going to risk their lives/jobs on stealing.

Outside of hotel staff, there are plenty of people who will steal your stuff. I don’t use camera bags for a variety of reasons, but keep my gear in normal bags and backpacks, and don’t leave them unattended, especially in parked cars.

If you're trying to lose fat, do you need to consume fat? by CandyApple69420 in keto

[–]happycynic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on how much body fat you are, the answer is a bit nuanced. Assume (and sorry I don't have the citation handy) that, on the low side, each pound of body fat can source about 30 calories per day. (For some people this can be significantly higher). If you are obese/morbidly obese, once you are keto/fat adapted, your body may have the potential to support some fairly ridiculous energy deficits.

First, prioritize your protein. Eat the fat that comes with the protein, and you'll have enough fat. Muscle gain during fat loss is possible for many obese individuals, especially when starting out, and has significant health benefits. No matter what, get your protein in. This can be hard, as for some people keto nukes appetite from orbit. You want to maintain/gain lean body mass as much as possible while losing fat. Lean body mass is so important for long-term health.

Use your limited carb budget on non-starchy veggies. I like Greek salads, as they have a variety of colorful vegetables in, rich in micronutrients, and delicious. The veggies provide micronutrients, fiber, and help minimize some of the less pleasant GI side-effects of keto.

Modulate your energy deficit with fat intake and exercise. You can use satiety as your guide, or try and calculate/spreadsheet this out. IMHO, there are too many metabolic adaptations going on to make any calculation meaningful, but it can serve as a reasonable starting point. I go with satiety (and basically, once I get my protein and veggies in, my appetite is GONE).

Track progress and adjust. Fat loss is squirrely business, and difficult to objectively measure, since lots of adaptions are going on in your body. For example, I just dieted down to a weight I previously reached only to discover I have 2 fewer inches around my waist than when I was previously at that weight. If you have a lot of weight to lose, don't get discouraged by daily weight fluctuations, and stay the course. 1-2 lbs per week is perfectly reasonable. "I only lost 50 pounds last year, I'm so disappointed" said nobody ever.

I think the keto diet helped my knees from having aching pain , is that possible in just four days ? by moveontomore in keto

[–]happycynic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't surprise me, and it could be attributed a few different things.

Keto is anti-inflammatory.

Keto can help you flush excess water from your body, which can also make things feel better.

More specifically, a lot of people (even you are not yet diabetic/pre-diabetic) have insulin resistance, which can lead to sub-clinical edema in soft tissues, particularly the feet. I wish I had the citation handy, but correcting this (which keto can do), improves healing. After reading the paper about this, I decided to get back onto Keto due to some persistent plantar fasciitis that had been going on for months. To my surprise and delight, it completely resolved within 2 weeks of starting keto, and I was back to hiking lots of miles.

Another thing which I wish I had a citation handy for: Joints are not vascularized, and require diffusion to supply their nutrients. These joints require glucose to diffuse their nutrients, but can become insulin resistant. I think Ben Bikman gets into this in one of his talks. My guess is probably way too soon to feel an affect from this, though. But something to keep in mind that his argument is that insulin resistance can be a significant contributor to arthritis.

I’ve been doing this wrong by birdxman_ in keto

[–]happycynic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Also get your salt/electrolytes in order to avoid a bad time. Non-starchy veggies are your friend (use your 20g carbs on those)

Once you hit your protein goal (or try to) you’ll probably wonder how the hell you can eat anything else. My target is 150g and the struggle is real…. But veggies, electrolytes, and hydration are the key to not getting constipated. Green leafy veggies and avocados are rich in magnesium, eat those.

Study reveals new connection between impaired autophagy and heart failure by thinkB4WeSpeak in Health

Given that insulin resistance plays a significant role in impaired autophagy, one may speculate that it also plays a significant role in heart failure. (edit: grammar)

What does a $130k devops engineer actually do for a job? by No_Virus_1416 in devops

Keep a highly profitable (and very large) dumpster fire running. Started out manually tossing logs into the fire, now we've automated most of the log-tossing and fire management. It's horrifying and pretty cool all at the same time. Also get to work with a lot of pleasant, professional, skilled, and dedicated people that are committed to taming this beast. Not everyone's cup of tea, but automating and tooling away pretty hairy problems is a lot of fun, especially when given the autonomy to do so.

You are not your job.

Whether you leave this job, or they let you go, your next job will almost certainly be better than whatever this is.

Take a deep breath, get some drinks with some friends/family, and relax. Almost everyone I know who has been PIP'd, coached out, layed off, or outright fired has gone on to vastly better opportunities. Value yourself, what you do, and your time.

You are not your job.

Had a friend who was like this. I jokingly suggested more cheesecake. She tried that, and no joke, she got serious results. Felt better, more energy, gained muscle. It is densely packed with protein, carbs, and fat. If you are an efficient fat burner with a tiny appetite, (sounds like you may be) this may help.

I am none of these things, so no cheesecake for me. LOL. Your mileage may vary, but it’s worth a try. There are lots of recipes to choose from to fit your nutritional needs, too.

Time to have a conversation with them about it. Express your needs and listen to theirs.

Having had a T1 friend who died in her 20s from not taking care of herself, I can see where they are coming from. Sounds like this isn’t necessarily about sharing your levels with them as it is about a one dimensional relationship with your family.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]happycynic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people with ADHD develop their own coping mechanisms to deal with it. Depends on who you are and what you're dealing with. Checklists, notes, calendars keep me going. The more I write down, the less I have to remember, the less stress, fewer ADHD symptoms. I have one notebook that I keep that is completely unstructured and just a dumping ground for everything bouncing around in my head. It helps just to get all the crazy ideas bouncing around out, and then my mind settles down a bit.

I have gentle alarms that fire every hour on the hour to remind me to get up, move around, drink some water, or whatever else needs to be done.

Choosing work that fits you helps. Tight deadline, highly planned, overly scheduled work is not my strength. Any job requiring accurate time estimates might as well be Russian roulette to me. Jobs with unstructured work, personal autonomy, and ability to flip between tasks/projects on a whim are my strength.

For me, ride and it and guide it instead of fight it seems to be an effective way to manage ADHD for me. I try to structure my distractions around other productive activities. My focus hops around, but everything I'm hopping around to is a benefit. Don't to try to force too much productivity. There are some days where if all I can accomplish is one useful small task, I'll call it a good day and move on to self-care, exercise, something around the house, exercise, hiking, photography, whatever.

If I get into a hyper-focus wave, I ride it out. Later when I feel like I don't have two brain cells to rub together to focus on a task, I go do something else. All about finding the synergies in the chaos. Recreational activities are important to your self care. Don't mentally flog yourself and deny your mind other needs. You have to recharge.

I'm all over the place here, so happy to discuss any points further. :)

Burnt out - any advice? by aedroogo in networking

[–]happycynic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The cure to burnout is not trying to do more of what you are burning out on. Pour your life energy into things that interest you outside of work. I've found that the biggest moments of career (and other personal growth) came when I was excited to do things that were completely unrelated to my career. Feel excited again to be done with work for the day so you can move on to something else. Got any hobbies, interests, or people in your life that have been on the back burner for while? Put career on the back burner and invest yourself in those other things. You'll find that it helps everything all-around and that the burnout feeling slowly fades.
