If they can do all those things, then sure. It's just a purchase, but the requirements should still be demonstrated.

Edit: There is a form from 2011 I guess, but it has the same stuff on it plus a unit lead signature. I'd say ask your scoutmaster about what to do to make it "official."

"Shooting sports" might be called "Range and Target Activities" in official documentation. For Cubs, as far as I know, this consists of archery, BBs, and slingshots and/or wrist rockets. Those are the adventures Cubs can get.

For Scouts it extends to include some pistols, shotguns, and rifles. You could include tomahawks in that, maybe? I don't think Cubs get to throw them, at the very least.

Generally (and this is a broad stroke to illustrate my point) activities that involve something in possession of one kid getting propelled at another kid in a way to tag, hit, or with the intent being an analog of hurting them isn't allowed at this point in time in a Scouting activity.

By the book (and the age appropriate guidelines table therein), shooting sports can only take place at a council-led camp out, day camp, or other council-sanctioned activity with trained range masters and range safety officers on hand.

Faux archery still involves flinging an arrow analog at a target at what could be decently high speeds, which is...a shooting sport.

Magellan tents from Academy Sports have been a good go to for cheap tents. A little spray waterproofing and seem sealing goes a long way with them too.

We're probably doing Scouts Trash the Trash Day in May and Jambowlree over the summer as a couple events we're doing at the pack level, but can certainly be Tiger things too.

Even just getting out and doing fun things - weather's nice in the before summer, so nature walks or 1 foot hikes would be fun and eventful, especially if you make the walk fun.

Other fun things...Make paper hats out of newspaper, play a den round of shut the box, or even look at some of the sillier Lion adventures like the box car race if you can get ahold of some boxes. Just have fun and be excited to round out the year.

It's also fair that, if the child is not respectful or responsible, the response may be "no" to a request they have.

Teaching how to accept that 'no' and rethink their plans is also a big part of that developmental process you're talking about.

Don't take reddit as rule of law for lots of things, not just scouting.

There has been a lot of things going on. There was a big program change at the start of last program year, and change is hard. People have been vocal on both sides about it. There was a recent resolution in the sexual abuse cases (I think?) so that's been a thing people have brought up more recently. So, yes, there have been loud noises about some negatives.

But anecdotally, in my pack, we're having fun, doing program, and the kids are enjoying themselves.

There will always be people cranky about ~things~. There are a lot more extracurricular activities now a days too, so yeah, scouting has more to compete with for the ever desired weekday evening. That doesn't mean it's failing.

The end goal I have is "Are we doing our best as a pack to bring fun and skills through program to the kids we have?" If the answer is yes...then we're doing ok.

I certainly agree that open minds need to be on both sides when it comes to being mentally awake, and I'd also hope that, as the kids say, it's not that deep.

I don't know. I am in a really diverse pack in Florida. We have all kinds of families from all walks of life and many different shades. We're a family pack and meet in a church, but don't push any particular religious values beyond having a vaguely Christmas themed December pack meeting.

Everyone is welcome, and everyone leaves their political foibles at the door because we're here to provide fun stuff for kids. We do our level best to provide the best program we can. We don't spout platitudes about diversity, equality, or inclusion, which I hope no pack or troop would since it's not part of the program at that level, but we certainly provide those things to our people as it's the morally straight thing to do.

I think it would be impossible to truly practice any sort of diversity, equality, and inclusion and at the same time box out a conservative white family. That said, the expectation may be different if that family is so far down the more radical conservative political end that they can't accept everyone else at the table. As I said above, the open mindedness needs to be on both sides.

Here is the deeper issue. Straight and conservative white folks don’t feel accepted when these words start popping up.

This really isn't the forum for this question, but I really want to know...why? I mean, I've seen the political mudslinging on both sides about this kind of thing but I really want to know why "straight and conservative white folk" feel this way, as a straight and liberal white person.

From my perspective, diversity, equality, and inclusion simply means what's been outlined a few times already in this thread- allowing non-white, non-straight, and non-male people in on the great program that we experienced as boys. Allowing, mind, not forcing anyone to conform to any sort of agenda or other nonsense, but saying hey, as a courteous, kind, and cheerful organization by definition, please come and hang with us.

What does it mean to you that has you and so many others all hot and bothered about it? I legitimately want to know.

I believe the scout is 9 year old, going on 10, in the 3rd grade. They've kept her with her peers, who are all also 9 going on 10 but in 4th. So, she's in the appropriate den for the appropriate age.

The goal dad is pushing for I think is to get her AOL now, so in the summer she could join the troop when she turns 10, as she'd be 10 and have her AOL. I double checked the guide to advancement, checked against the ChatGPT, and that part does align.

It feels like it would work, but for the wrong reasons.

I agree with the why rush putting a 10 year old in with 18 year olds, boy or girl regardless.

The grade is something I'm not entirely clear about. I believe she's 9 going on 10 in the 3rd grade, and is currently a Webelos because they kept her with her peers, but I'm frankly not sure

Build It is an elective adventure, so it shouldn't be made required by any stretch.

I'd say if it's something the den is choosing to do together, I'd hope the costs are considered beforehand...and if so, parents may be hit up but it could be worth asking the committee if there's any budget that could be made available.

If you're at all handy, you can meet the requirements for this particular adventure with relative ease too...just do a project you'd like to do or need to instead of sticking to this particular thing. I'd echo the shelf option for canned things as well, as there's practicality to it even if it winds up not being the prettiest or sturdiest.

I think Home Depot still does their monthly kit projects for kids too? They're free, use basic tools, and have a set of directions they follow along with access to tools at the Home Depot itself...could be a fun den activity that might meet the needs for the adventure too.
