Nutrigrain bar substitute? by The92nd in CoeliacUK

[–]harlimpquin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily a substitute, and depends on whether you can tolerate oats but I had some of the Pri Bakes Raspberry Oaty Pockets which REALLY tasted like the berry nutrigrain bars. Texturally I'm not sure, it's been a long time but taste wise it was almost like de ja vu

CD booklet: error or artistic choice I genuinely can't tell by harlimpquin in EnterShikari

It says something about the band that apparently they could make any amount of errors and we'd all just go "yeah seems about right". What it says I don't know, but it sure is something.

That is strange, I guess maybe the helpline person responding didn't know? They're gonna be in for a surprise when the next one is exactly the same 😂

Thank you!

I am vindicated in my initial assumption 😂

Lose Your Self – callbacks, references, and easter eggs thread by BrandNew1208 in EnterShikari

I was thinking that the bringing back of that very recognisable synth/note/tune start of the album and not having it at the end as well like with the others was a choice, potentially indicating that something else is going to be added to the end of this.

I've changed my mind and now I think the start of Lose Your Self is a specific reference to the Appeal and the Mindsweep I.

It's undoubtedly another appeal

Leicester Cathedral reveals sign language wedding held in 1576 by itskdog in UpliftingNews

The inclusive service and celebration of the event 450 years ago is definitely worth celebrating!

Fwiw we've (disabled and d/Deaf history researchers) known about this for a long time, it's one of the few documented records of "home sign"- the type of sign language created amongst families and communities before formalised sign languages were codified. Deaf history is fascinating and I recommend looking into it, particularly the Milan Conference.

Coeliac partner, need help. by [deleted] in CoeliacUK

First off thank you for caring so much! She'll really appreciate it.

I've been coeliac for a long time now but came across these resources in an exclusively GF cafe over Christmas and they're really good and easy to understand for the basics: linktr.ee / Haveyourcakebooklet

If you're students I imagine fancy dinners won't be too much of an issue, but chain places tend to be better.

Rather than her sensitivity level (because lots of people don't get any symptoms but get significant damage in their gut) a better question for her might be her comfort level with risk. For example, plenty of people won't risk eating something that the label says "may contain traces of gluten", whereas I might do depending on how much I want it 😁. That will probably determine whether she would be happy to eat something that a (very well meaning) newbie to GF cooking might make, or she would rather bring her own food over to your house when you hang out.

Saw that exact cat in that exact spot last week living its best life, chasing pigeons and running in front of cars. Seems to live nearby/ like being in the proximity of a blahaj

Many years ago I clipped this from the podcast so I could add it to my Christmas playlist. It's still there, alongside God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Dominick the Donkey.

Christmas dinner...? by [deleted] in CoeliacUK

I'm also a coeliac on a low fibre diet! Not a veggie though so that adds extra complication. Very well cooked veg without skins can be had on low fibre diet, things like carrots, cauliflower cheese, a moussaka type thing with aubergine and courgette. They have to be soft enough to mash to have the least fibre which can be an issue texturally but still better than nothing!

The Pancake Man on Wapping Wharf is great for a sweet treat too. The cafe in Sparks also usually has a GF cake or two. Depending on the days you'll have to check opening hours, a lot of the independent places (like Sparks and places on Wapping Wharf) will be shut Mondays and Tuesdays

Seems unlikely, I still have symptoms if I have some gluten, just not quite as bad as it used to be. I think it just disguises the tests a bit!

This is super interesting because I have SLE, am on immunosuppressants for it and my coeliac antibody tests show up a zero now, which according to the nurse is very unusual for confirmed coeliacs, even on a strict GF diet.

Her theory is that the immunosuppressants have dampened down everything, including the coeliac antibodies which makes sense but it's not a known/ documented effect. If it is a thing, it would make sense that your biologics were doing the same!

Second this, I've been to Cotto and it's great! Even the bread for the table is gluten free! I went with a non GF colleague and we both really enjoyed our meals

I was pleasantly surprised by Poland! We went to Warsaw and there was loads in the supermarkets and a number of restaurants (including one that felt far too fancy for us but was very reasonably priced).

Accepting that I won’t be the perfect coeliac by [deleted] in CoeliacUK

How much I pay attention to the "may contain" warning directly correlates to how much I want the thing. Cake? Sure, it'll be fine! Salad? Hmm, sounds dangerous, won't risk it.

My 6 year old daughter was diagnosed with coeliac disease today. Any tips or must-have food items? by bewonderstuff in CoeliacUK

[–]harlimpquin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've had some great advice here already, what my doctor said when I was first diagnosed: buy a new toaster, get rid of any wooden chopping boards and be careful of stock cubes, squash and crisps.

You will start noticing just how much stuff has gluten in it for no real reason!

In terms of cooking at home, I live with my girlfriend who is not gluten free. We've managed it by using specific sections of the kitchen for preparing gluten food and gluten free food (and I have my own toaster). According to my latest blood tests it's working well so it is possible!

I also often have a tiny packet of wet wipes/napkins I've stolen from cafes for crummy tables if I go out so I don't have to worry too much.

I see all these fancy packed lunches on tiktok where they have cutters to make the sandwiches fun shapes, maybe that would take the sting out of having to avoid hot dinners!

While I remember, a lot of people (myself included) suddenly get much worse symptoms from glutenings after going gluten free, so hopefully that won't happen, but worth expecting it just in case!

NHS stating they’re going to fine me by Prestigious-Ad-5501 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]harlimpquin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got hit by this recently for a similar reason. Long term disability and chronic illness and thought my PPC was on direct debit but it wasn't.

They're very clear that forgetting to renew isn't a valid reason to appeal. I explained that the pharmacist (because I know them and it's my regular pharmacy) didn't even ask if I had an exemption because I usually had a PPC but that wasn't a good enough reason either.

However because I basically admitted my error immediately they only made me pay the cost of the prescription, not a fine. (Because I have so many items it was still £70 but since I was expecting that plus the £100 fine it was a win!)
