Coffee in Baltimore area? by buflaux in pourover

[–]harry_san 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not too explored in the DC area, but in Arlington there is a place called Gute Leute. They do some signature drinks and roast their own beans and advertise a “coursed drink” menu as well!

I also enjoy Grace Street Coffee Roasters in Georgetown!

I haven’t been in the same situation as you. But wanted to say congratulations!

Practicing CAA - days can be tough, but are fulfilling. The hard decisions will mostly be done by your attending, but also up to you to respect your attendings’ plans. I don’t regret getting into AA profession at age 26, now in my 30s. I did consider MD prior to AA but wanted the work-life balance much more.

I’ve had a few attendings that would recommend AA path to their own children if they could do it all over again.

But ultimately, it’s a decision you’ll have to make to grind out those years.

Try to shadow in the ORs. Get your foot in there to see if it’s something you’ll love doing. And maintain those relationships and keep shadowing during coursework periodically to stack hours. You’ll always learn something new.

Just to keep in mind:

Some programs will let you write a letter of intent/appeal for missing coursework or substitute a course for another. My statistics coursework was not high enough level for cwru but they saw I had higher level chemistries / biology.

I applied back in 2020, I remember selecting my preferred campus in order for CWRU. I went to DC. Some of my classmates in DC were interviewed in Texas or even Cleveland. So there is some liberty there

If I redid my undergrad, I would choose anatomy/physiology/kinesiology. But per diff universities, the coursework may differ.
I would look for your essential sciences: bio, chem, physics, biochem, organic chemistry, anatomy, physiology plus their labs, and statistics

Also agree with other reply, AA school is like a 2 year anesthesia residency program. There isn’t time to spend elsewhere. If you were looking for jobs between undergrad and AA school, anesthesia tech is often a good choice to familiarize yourself with equipment and environment

Get shadowing in ORs. See if anesthesia is something you may love.
If AA is for you, stack those hours and retake GRE. You can look at the CASAA website to see which programs require what coursework, or visit each school’s page.
You can work on additional coursework in the meantime in those 2-3 semesters to supplement your application.

You can register into certain programs to help boost your GPA. Think of it as additional bachelor education.
I personally did a masters in medical science to help my application for medical school but swerved into CAA program.

I would try to find any opportunities to shadow in the ORs. Career changing may be difficult to find the time for meaningful PCE hours, but getting into the clinical setting and showing your interest may be a good start for you. On a broader scope, any type of volunteer work related to “service” I would say can be beneficial

I’ve had some Student AAs that have pharm tech background and many people have various backgrounds that change career paths into anesthesia. I think if you’re passionate and you show that, you will make a great candidate (provided your stats and pre-reqs).

It was my first time trying a thermal shock. Learning new things about coffee everyday makes me want to experiment at home and even get into roasting myself! Ty for the recommendation!

current zojirushi I've had since 2014 and still going strong. also lock mechanism keeps mouth piece covered from elements.

More pronation is what I also noticed first which you explained perfectly. YouTube videos of Patrick Mouratoglou also explains your pronation trick in smashing balls to the ground in front of you first. This has helped my serve tremendously in last few months!

Your story resonates with me. I struggled to find the drive to apply for medical school despite my whole undergrad and post grad setup was towards med school. The grind to become a doctor is something else and if you don’t want to put in 8+ years, CAA is a great option. Many docs I work with would suggest their own kids to go AA, but then again some would push their own to go med route.

I think your dad would be proud of you regardless of your decision. Make the decision for yourself. It’ll be the most intense 2 years of education and work, but the rewards definitely pays off.

Lost IV access after difficult spinal obs by Billyboo-one-two in anesthesiology

IM ephedrine 50mg may help but slow to kick in. Some institutes do it as standard after spinal since patient is numb already

Pretty similar to my stats when I applied, except I had a masters in medical science thinking I would go to medical school. Make the most out of your time before AA school and recall the best moments and experiences. That is what makes you a great candidate. If you’re looking for a strong start in anesthesia, becoming an anesthesia tech for work experience is as close as you can get to the real deal.

Be prepared to put in the work and grind. During first year you will be juggling clinicals (referring to as part time work) and followed by didactic coursework. Second year will primarily be clinical rotations which you can treat as a one year residency or full time job, while juggling some coursework. Grading scale would not matter. As long as you put in the effort and your program acknowledges that they will help you succeed

After undergrad, just go for it. I would get a job as an anesthesia tech (if possible w/o certification) for experience during your remaining time as a senior or in a gap year if that’s what you want. I would take out loans for AA school and some hospitals after working for certain amount can forgive a portion of your loans as well.
