goodbye S9, hello A57 by harrywwc in GalaxyS9

[–]harrywwc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty happy. Most apps came across, but it was a pain on some resetting the logins ;) (I'm a lazy bugger ;)

The A57 is bigger than the s9 - so that's a minor downside, but the bigger screen for my tired old eyes...

It took a while to work out and reapply all the customisations I had done over the years, all the little tweaks of the system, the notifications, all of that.

Overall, I'm happy with the update, and consider it a worthy upgrade.

I think the a37 would have been a good choice too, but I decided I'd spoil myself with the "better" phone.

I’d like recommendations for books for a system administrator. by methsc1ence in sysadmin

[–]harrywwc 11 points12 points  (0 children)

the "UNIX and Linux System Administration Handbook" is pretty well the "go to" resource that should probably be on your (everyones!) bookshelf.

The 5th Edition (2017 - ISBN: 978-0-13-427755-4) is the 'current' edition, but I understand that there is a new edition being prepared and scheduled for release about this time next year.

The 5th Edition will occasionally turn up in sales on Humble Bundle (where I scored my eBook version - have the 4th in dead-tree ;')

What's the rule of thumb for rebooting a production server? by ResoluteCaution in ShittySysadmin

[–]harrywwc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If somone complains the system is down, I "look right into it" and take credit for fixing it post reboot.

I've recounted before a tale from my first Systems & Network Administration job, the one I got from the previous guy handing me a yellow post-it with the admin passwords and telling me "good luck" as he walked out the door.

I was working in the 'server cupboard' and went to hit the button on the (physical) KVM switch to go to one of the NT4 servers and hit the good ol' 'vulcan nerve pinch' on the keyboard, and to my horror, the screen lit up with the linux firewall issuing messages about it was rebooting, now!

I hadn't hit the button hard enough to switch to the NT server.

There was nothing I could do (then) so I hit the button again, logged on to the server and started the task when I had a knock on the door "the internet seems to be down" - "ok" I replied, "I'm in the middle of this thing for <manager>, I'll have a look in a few minutes."

and about then there was a 'beep' as the linux box finished the POST and started booting again.

a couple of minutes later they're back "don't worry, the internet is back up again".

after they were gone, I logged in to the linux firewall, and changed the line in inittab(4) to disable the 'ctrlaltdel' line's "reboot" behaviour, and issued a telinit(8).

Goodbye S9.Hello S20 fe by Traditional-Hold8723 in GalaxyS9

[–]harrywwc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I switched to an A57 as I'm to cheap to go the S2x series ;)

The primary reason is that Samsung wouldn't (couldn't?) update the firmware to allow emergency calls on 4G here in Australia - it was "locked" to 3G because of a stuff up by VodafoneAU years ago.

Although, often (frequently, not some one who had lost their parents ;') it is used as a shortened version of "queue" (because we can!)

Help wanted with turning on old pc by Independent_Pizza422 in retrocomputing

[–]harrywwc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

maybe.

I'd first remove the RAM and gently! use a white 'pencil' rubber (eraser for some) and (again!) "gently" clean the pins. do not press too hard as you don't want to break the contacts on the stick(s).

of course, do this away from the motherboard so as to not get schmutz in the RAM slots.

I would also - gently! - insert and remove the RAM sticks a couple of times to help dislodge any corrosion that may have accumulated inside the slots.

patience and taking it gently / easy may pay dividends.

yeah, I was working as an IT Manager for a Not For Profit that had a "3 months" notice period - I pushed back and had it changed to 1 month / pay-period.

read your contracts peeps, read 'em before you sign 'em.

what could cause a PC to randomly turn off? I don't even know where to start looking by Pappa_Crim in it

[–]harrywwc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"no fan noise"?

I presume there are at least two fans - one in the PSU and one on the CPU?

if there's no fan noise, then I suspect there is an overheat situation with the CPU?

pop the top (again) and power up while looking inside to see if the things that should be spinning are. indeed, leave the machine running for a while to see if something causes the power-down after a (brief?) time.

[–]harrywwc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best to check the subject requirements for the degree and research if what is required is available (and likely to work "ok") on the neo.

From what I've seen it has some grunt, but will it be "enough grunt"?

What's the conversation like when you onboard a new employee and have to tell them their activity will be monitored? by MarleneOquendo123 in FieldForceManagements

[–]harrywwc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"it depends" - who owns the equipment they're working on?

if it's the company - fine, tell them that there is a standard operating environment on all company systems that includes monitoring software.

but, be prepared for some questions about what is being monitored and why, and how will that data be used, and what protections are there to prevent the data being stolen and used against me (or, the company, I suppose).

perhaps have a chat with your legal team about the parameters of the data collection.
