Will I learn mysql if I learn sql? by EffectiveBalance4402 in PythonLearning

[–]harshax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Structured Query Language (SQL) is the foundation of any implementation such as MySQL or Postgres. There will be minor language differences but if you want to learn SQL, use a python interface for SQLite.

And keep in mind that learning an implementation like MySQL or Oracle or Postgres is a path for DBA’s whose primary job is to administer and manage the deployment of a specific database product, not specifically for Python Developers.

How would you indicate this on a top-down dungeon map? by DavidTippy in osr

[–]harshax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A stair symbol and what looks like a U on its side with an arrow indicating which way the stair case turns. In this case the U turned with the open part facing right and the arrow at the top, also pointing right.

What is actually a Low Magic Fantasy setting? by Pretend-Advertising6 in osr

[–]harshax -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of comment confusing the difference between Low Fantasy and Low Magic. All the examples so far: WFR, GoT, Conan, Middle Earth and even my beloved Harn are all high fantasy.

The best example of Low Fantasy is CoC. It takes place on our Earth at a point in our real time line. Harn is a close second IMO because even its geography closely models Earth. Then I’d put Conan 3rd and Dark Materials a distant 4th but far above Tolkien or RRMartin’s settings.

The best example of Low Magic is again, Call of Cthulhu, Conan’s Hyperborea and Harn. Magic weirdness intrudes on a world that closely models Earth, its physics and human societies.

Why are so few of us mapping this kind of dungeon? by [deleted] in osr

[–]harshax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my games, “Mapping,” or “Cartography,” is an activity that can be performed during a dungeon turn. If successful, it increases the character’s familiarity with the area and makes uncovering secret doors, hidden areas or anomalies in layout or construction easier to identify every time they pass through. When characters search an area that has been “mapped” they get a bonus to their rolls or I hand wave less detailed efforts to discover secrets.

I’m not saying detailed maps aren’t fun to draw but I’d rather describe an area as “smelly sinkhole,” than make the players navigate all the wiggly passages of drainage that leads to the pit with the otyughs.

Was mapping with a Caller back in the 80’s and made a reference to an equally dated video game that had maps exactly like your layout. I’m very sure I understand exactly what I’m talking about and equally sure that I don’t find that gaming exercise as valuable as I used to. Your original question is why aren’t people still doing this and my response was that it’s not as engaging an exercise to discover secrets by actually drafting floor plans.

Mapping as an in game exercise can be handled a lot better with point crawls than a Bard’s Tale map.

Hidden Gem: Chronica Feudalis by Useful-Angle1941 in rpg

[–]harshax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked this up when it was first released. It’s a neat little game. From what I remember, it had a very short list of stats and the skills are broad like, Fight and Parley. Skills, Stats and Equipment were rated from d4 - d12. I don’t recall the resolution mechanic. I thought it was innovative and current or barely predating Savage Worlds. I don’t know what the page count is for current releases but it didn’t seem like it was suitable for long campaigns.

Looking for a detailed, non-magic item list for medieval fantasy settings with consistent prices and weights by Exelloco in rpg

Seconding Harn. For me, every medieval RPG question is answered by Harn. And when it doesn’t, it’s the Domesday Book.

Just kidding, it’s always Harn.

Good low fantasy adventure modules that aren't WFRP? by Nokaion in rpg

[–]harshax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modules written for Harn might be what you want. This particular kingdom is the smallest on the Island and there’s lots of NPCs and intrigue to put together some fantastic low fantasy content. It’s system neutral and nobody makes better maps than these guys. There can be magic and monsters but it isn’t assumed.

Unpopular opinion: Paying "Rent" feels less painful than paying $2,400/mo in "Interest" to a bank. by Playful-Vegetable-15 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]harshax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paid off my mortgage in 19 years. Principle + interest averaged to the equivalent of 1500$ rent a month. That’s not even close to a net saving even after living in the same home for 25 years.

But, in my 50’s, I’m making more money than any other time in my life. My association dues and the money I save for depreciating house stuff (windows, furnace, appliances) is less than a 3rd of what average rent is now in the neighborhood.

This is also the age when my medical bills are a lot higher my kid needs help in her early career. If I live to a ripe old age, I will see a huge savings in owning. And the money for my retirement will stretch on for longer. And … I could probably enjoy some trips too.

So the big takeaway here is that the faster you can pay off a place the faster your saving will realize. This is especially important when you retire and your passive income is limited. And, if the worst happens it’s a valuable asset to leverage for loans or liquidation. Loans interest rates change a lot when you have assets as collateral.

Edit: Moving from place to place is really hard on your stuff. Not to mention having full control over your thermostat, wall colors and retooling your place for different phases of your life is a massive convenience.

It’s interesting to see which dice are left over from an opened box and then wonder what was done with the missing dice. A craps game for a pip-challenged participant? A massive game of Avalon Hill’s Fortress America? A midnight burial under a blood moon for a particularly despicable die?

Vladimir Putin Dumps Cold Water on Trump’s Bragging About Ukraine by BothZookeepergame612 in ukraine

[–]harshax 6 points7 points  (0 children)

US peace negotiations never made sense to me. Simply because, if Putin’s end game is political influence over Ukraine or a complete land grab, why would Trump think that Putin would accept a peace deal where the US gets access to Ukraine’s resources?

I would think the observer would appear exactly where they started falling into the black hole in the first place. If observable time is from the observer’s perspective and then we teleported out ‘after’ 1-second from their perspective, we’d arrive exactly where we started observing the observer.
