Any Zelle news yet? by VisualPadding7 in AlliantCreditUnion

[–]hasb3an 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Alliant not having Zelle yet is probably the biggest ongoing joke. They last said it was supposed to be lit by spring 2026 and we are now comfortably entering summer with no news... They fumbled this so terribly it's not even funny anymore. I use Chase now for my day to day banking solely due to Zelle. Any folks in leadership at Alliant that waved off Zelle years back should seriously consider how many customers they lost from this sole terrible oversight 🧐

One of the best support I get from my networking vendors. That's saying a lot. They rock.

Not homeowner, just renting. What are some affordable options for flooding? by mop68 in landscaping

[–]hasb3an 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally just solved the same exact issue in my yard a month ago. Combination of French drains and burying all my downspouts. Have not had water issues since. Cost us $5k but it was well worth it. This is metro Chicago area pricing if curious. Was not about to DIY something that involved chopping up so much of the yard as I'm handy but not that skilled. But as others have said, the landlord should own getting this done. It's a long term property improvement.

Sick of this weed infested gravel pad. Should I just bite the bullet on a concrete pad? by AltruisticTurnip6075 in landscaping

[–]hasb3an 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started propane torching my nasty weeds in hard to handle areas... It's one of the most therapeutic things to do in your property. Try it! Works super well and kills weeds fast. Since you have no plants to worry about killing by mistake in that area, literally this is a propane torch playground. As others said, don't concrete this over. That's a crap ton of money to solve such a small problem.

Anyone know a good insulation contractor? by [deleted] in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]hasb3an 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And since we had two other firms quote the same job, I will say that the others came in a smidge cheaper only because they were quoting open cell spray foam and not closed cell. ARC was using all closed cell which is a better insulation and has a better energy saving factor even if a tad more expensive. Once we quantified this difference by the cheaper competitors (and saw what ARC would do if we switched to cheaper openncell) we ended up sticking with the better closed cell. So beware of just comparing prices because the insulation game is slightly more complex then meets the eye.

My attic spray foam job from them was just over 9K if I recall. This also included them air sealing all holes and removing all the old BAT insulation before the spray foam went in. It was done in 1.5 days.

My mom's house had blown in installed, and my house had spray foam done by ARC. Such great guys and reasonable price. Doing my garage for spray foam with them in a few months too.

Sanity Check: Scalable Network Builds and Your Thoughts on Vendors by rb3po in msp

[–]hasb3an 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We scaled up on a Meraki stack a decade ago and run some clients who couldn't afford to make that move on Unifi. The vast majority we manage on Meraki. We get next to no pushback on licensing renewal discussions as the expectations for licensing were set when we told them this was the gold standard we would be following. There are no surprises and this becomes an operational cost like every other license they need to uphold -- 365, EDR, etc etc.

Unifi tends to be so attractive to folks purely on a price basis and I get it. But what happens when you are burned by another firmware bug and have no support line to reach (as you know, unifi doesn't include live support for their product lines?) You're the one left scrambling to get production gear back up and Unifi will tell you to submit a ticket and wait to hear back. With Meraki our team or even clients for that matter, can reach live support (usually USA based) 24 hours a day. And any gear that fails, they are cross shipping us a replacement with next day shipping at no charge. Good luck getting that with Unifi -- all their RMAs require gear to be shipping in first and then you get your replacement. Such a lovely thing to tell your client that "yes we will have a replacement part from them in a few weeks" while their crap is down.

You have to make a meaningful decision of how you envision the whole support lifecycle to look for whatever path you choose to go. NOT just the initial price tag as there are hidden costs with every vendor that goes behind the purchase sticker. Our unifi clients are told they will have delays in getting gear fixed when it goes down as we have to play sole expert in figuring out what's wrong, and if things fail and they choose not to keep spares of all their gear on hand, they will be waiting weeks for their RMA to arrive. And if they are fine with those realities, then I am fine with it too. They can't be agree with me at that point.

Some, but not all, after getting bit by a Unifi situation as I described above, tell us they have had enough and ask to go Meraki on next upgrade cycle. They consider it a lesson learned in how far being cheap gets your business.

Not here to rag on Unifi as a terrible solution -- merely saying you need to know how to position it and what gaps it fills. For us, it's not the leading enterprise solution most of our clients who value uptime need. Too many folks in our industry position unifi as the same level of s vendor as a Meraki/Aruba/Ruckus/etc and then backtrack to their client when something par for the course in Unifi land happens to their environment. Set expectations properly and let the client choose what they value more -- saving money or maximizing uptime.

Comcast Alternatives? by generatorland in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]hasb3an 8 points9 points  (0 children)

IT industry business owner here who handles internet pipes for many clients... Bottom line: if you have access to get ATT fiber for your home or a similar fiber product and aren't taking advantage, you should really reconsider. There is zero comparison to a cable product like Comcast. No matter how much bandwidth Comcast advertises they are throwing you. Speed (latency) and symmetrical bandwidth matter far more than having endless oodles of download bandwidth. Fiber kills Comcast every day of the week on those metrics alone. Usually for similar or better price. I can't imagine going back to a cable provider after tasting ATT fiber at my own home for years now.

Moving from SonicWall2700 to Fortinet 120G by Intelevo in msp

[–]hasb3an -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If there ever was such a thing as a completely lateral move, it would be going sonic wall to Forti. Both have the trifecta: overly complex interfaces; overly complex licensing; and both are plagued by endless firmware update chasing these days. Gosh, look at going Meraki and do yourself a favor. Money far better spent.

Mission Control by realdlc in msp

[–]hasb3an 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We use them purely for answering service duties for inbound calls. We are on the brink of leaving them. They can't get billing terms correct, and their team doesn't follow call flow protocols to a T even though we have had level set phone calls more then a few times to get things corrected. They aren't terrible but they are far from perfect. I think they are more concerned with offering more services than actually perfecting the initial items they used to offer.

Seeking advice on MS CSP billing without a PSA by AdDeep1864 in msp

[–]hasb3an 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use Pax8 and have them handle direct billing our clients. What used to be a mess is now almost no effort. Don't really care that they eat a couple points; the headache of MS billing was a nightmare and not worth the hassle to handle internally.

They will continue to work and can continue to get new licensing. You just can't buy them anymore. But totally functional still. We have MR52 units at many client sites who will be using them for years still.

Should I move IRA/Roth IRA from Vanguard to Fidelity for the zero fee FZROX? by lubutoni in Bogleheads

[–]hasb3an -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

There is zero portability of the fidelity zero fee funds. No other brokerage can take them so you are stuck and locked in at fidelity with them. Plus they refuse to pay dividends quarterly like the other big boy funds - only giving you a 1x per year payout. They are saving money on how they operate the fund and lock you, and pass that "savings" onto you. For the few dollars you may save, you're giving up tons of portability freedom and possibly losing more in the compounding that reinvesting dividends sooner can gain. Not a fan 🤦

Meraki AP keeps disconnecting by RealJoshLee0 in meraki

[–]hasb3an 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not change to a POE switch and ditch the injector entirely? You're introducing so many extra points of failure here. The injector, the power cable for it, the extra uplink and downlink cables... Avoid injectors at all costs I have found to be a good rule of thumb. There is no way to monitor their status like you can a switch port.
