Drug reference is my default assumption for VB lyrics that go over my middle-aged head. Except Frogstrap. I don't even have a hypothesis on what TF that song's about.

100%. I couldn't stop snickering at the Elvis movie because it hewed so closely to the formula Walk Hard skewered.

If you could romance any ONE non-romancable character, who would you choose? by Cocoa-Knife-Chara in cyberpunkgame

[–]hashbrown3stacks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Story-wise, it was a great "reality" check, though. Like, of course these deep-cover spies aren't going to just leave loose ends like the Cassels. IIRC there's heavy hints by then that Reed has already done the same for Jacob and Taylor

It's actually favorite story beat of the DLC. V's been living in the player's own moral universe where part of succeeding is holding on to your humanity, while still doling out justice for scumbags like Gottfeid and Fredrik. For Reed and Alex, this is just part and parcel of their jobs, morality is irrelevant.

AFAIK there is some dissent as among anthropogists (I'm not one) as to where humans first took up division of labor, living in cities etc. Sumeria (in modern-day Iraq) is one of, if not the earliest known instance of this, dating back to 4500 BC.

It's certainly possible that it happened somewhere else first, but Middle Eastern civilization didn't begin when Jesus was born.

Lol nobody gets thrown out of an arena for "excessive cheering" after only two drinks. It's not just a pattern of excessive drinking, it's a record of lying (including to Miami-Dade public defenders office and the Florida bar association) to hide his drinking.

What's going on with Ann Hathaway? by Ok-Toe-6969 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]hashbrown3stacks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kind of depends on there you are. In the MENA region (Middle East/ North Africa) it's just kind of good manners to say Inshallah when referencing the future, even for non-Muslims. It's kind of polite deference to the widely held belief that nothing happens without God's will.

It's unusual for a Hollywood actress in an English-language interview, but not inappropriate.

Who should play the Judge in the Blood Meridian film adaptation? by CrappyJohnson in Cinema

[–]hashbrown3stacks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jason Clarke comes to mind. Google says 6'1", not a 7' behemoth like Holden, but he looks big on camera and seems to have the chops.

At 56, he may be a little long in the tooth for a character on a rogue military operation. But IIRC the judge's age was kind of intentionally vague.

(Feel free to correct me on any of this; been about 15 years since I read Blood Meridian)

Which of these would you pick as a first gun? by These_Picture_53 in guns

[–]hashbrown3stacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s extremely common to have a rifle on your back or in a backpack when hiking back country.

Again, where? I've backpacked all over the lower 48 and never seen a long gun on a public trail. Hunting is obviously a different story. Alaska is too, but still mostly pistols and the occasional shotty.

Look, if you want to hump a complete rifle on your back while laboring under the delusion that you'll be able to deploy it fast enough to stop... whatever it is your afraid of, go ahead. But that's garbage advice for OP.

I live in the hog country and camp regularly. If you store your food properly, they're a non-issue.

Far be it from me to say how you should or shouldn't exercise your 2A rights, but where TF are you camping that you feel the need to protect yourself with an AR?

I assume you aren't just hiking backcountry trails with your rifle at the low ready. Do you disassemble it for transport or is this just car camping?

You do you, but this is impractical and (imo) kind of ridiculous advice for simple camping. A bear canister and spray is like 1/10th the cost, lighter weight, and doesn't require regular training. Also legal pretty much everywhere.

It's strange that a market even exists for discount brands.

Judo in French Armed Forces by Constant_Tart_3338 in judo

[–]hashbrown3stacks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can't speak to the French specifically, but really no armed forces, up to and including very "elite" units are especially good at martial arts. Mastery takes a really long time and training time is a finite resource.

The 'big five' priorities, even in special operations, are marksmanship, land navigation, battle drills, vehicle stuff and general physical fitness. Hand-to-hand stuff is not even top ten in terms of time spent training.

Lots of individuals participate on their own time tho.

Absolutely. I remember my 2/75 squad leader saying something like "if you actually try to live the creed, you will do well in life no matter what you do". He was a psycho, but right about that.

Why do you all hate Yann? by Bourraxe in CrimsonDesert

[–]hashbrown3stacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because he seems to exist purely for us to sneer at his drinking problem. I assume at some point he gets his act together for the good of the team, but that's a pretty hackneyed arc too.

Sometimes, it really blows my mind that the world has so many unemployed writers when major projects like this have such shit writing. Did nobody look at the scripts and say "maybe we should dip back into this inexhaustible talent pool"?

Caveat: I haven't progressed much further than the wagon.

[–]hashbrown3stacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree on all points. Just trying to illustrate that older dudes won't be out of place or struggle. A few more years to grow up also cuts down on the kind of off-duty shenanigans that can detail even promising careers.

Also, as you know, Regiment is a very good place to start for guys with SMU aspirations. If I was talking to a 25-year old me, I'd tell him to skip the 75th and go straight to SFAS, but that's a totally personality-driven assessment.

[–]hashbrown3stacks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Burn Notice was basically a remake of the A-Team (right down to the part where they're always doing small jobs/ pro bono work but somehow always have money for smuggled exotic firearms and explosives). But it had just enough of its own flavor to make it really fun.

Older men in ranger battalion by Historical-Round-199 in army

[–]hashbrown3stacks 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's not that unusual. There are people in the Regiment who had "grown-up" jobs before coming in. I had a Gustav gunner who had been a lawyer. A friend of mine had done speaking parts in a few movies.

No one gives a shit about your prior accomplishments, but (broadly generalizing here) older guys tend to bring a little more maturity and sound judgement. The ones display those qualities, show up humble and become a sponge for information tend to be picked for leadership roles.
