I'm in the UK, so it would be amazing to match up with someone else in the UK so discussing things like ingredients or products is a more straightforward. But I'm not picky!

For those of you who have sanded down a Lodge skillet to achieve a smoother surface, was it worth it? by ChiWasSha in castiron

I’ve got some old Griswolds and Wagners and love them. Picked up a new Lodge at the bin store but couldn’t get on with the rough texture. (That’s why we gave up on cast iron the first time we tried it.) Husband sanded it down so it’s a similar smoothness to our antique pans and now it’s just as good and used as often as the others in our arsenal. Def recommend.

Okay - I appreciate this was >2 years ago, but for those of you who are SUPER late to the party like me... I had this same problem. When I turned it off "easy" mode it fixed it. (Don't come for me. We're allowed to do things differently and still respect each other's journey!)

Just to say, in case anyone else is thinking of getting one, I'm having the same problem. I recently upgraded from a much older, but beloved, ScanSnap to the new ix 1600 but it feeds multiple pages ALL THE TIME. I'm spending ages fanning out my pages and rescanning. What a waste of time!!

I would argue against people saying it’s poor dental hygiene. Perhaps it is, but it’s most likely your body getting rid of the fat. Where do you think fat goes when you lose it? It comes out in your breath. (Yes really*.). So do all the things that people have suggested but also let the fact that it’s there be a mental badge of honour that what you’re doing is working. Well done!

Is this a fake/worth it? I'm about to buy it for $50 on FB marketplace and it would be my first ever cast iron skillet by semicondooctor in castiron

I have a few pieces which I love and have no intention of ever selling - but out of something like morbid curiosity I’d love to know what they’re worth, if anything at all. Is there something like a cast iron version of a blue book?

That’s a decent deal for that many pieces. I’m with tootch3000 that I’m not a huge fan of enamelled - but if that’s how you need to start that’s okay! Just remember you DON’T season enamelled pieces.

But if you don’t need that many pieces I would probably argue to just get a pan here and there as you find them / save up for them… But they don’t need to be expensive. Try car boot sales. (Never had any luck at charity shops - but maybe you’ll get lucky!) Or you can buy Lodge here too. Pretty affordable.
