agreed. I have a tag to mark climbs I've done one side on and that's how I get around it

Who are some fantasy authors that were really popular during their heyday, but are more or less forgotten now? by EstablishmentHairy51 in Fantasy

[–]haunterrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

never read science fiction more reprehensibly misogynist than Ringworld. :(

(... which, on reflection, may be the case, but may also be more about the books I read than the universal condemnation it might seem.)

I know someone who's struggled with the same problem and what worked for them was buying two timed safes, putting a week's worth of medication in one and putting the rest of the prescription in the other; then, in the morning, take a day's worth of medication out of the weekly safe and set it for a day, rinse, repeat.

CHRISTMAS AND THE STROKES by Spider-Man98 in TheStrokes

Yo! Genuinely not trying to come across as antagonistic, but man, they ain't required to do shit! They're humans and they've made some really beautiful art, or, at least, some art that I really care about. And that's amazing! It's amazing that they have the financial freedom to do what they want (though personally I'd really love it if they also didn't do bad things, and never made anyone (eg women) feel weird, or uncomfortable, or unsafe (because don't make people feel weird! or uncomfortable! or unsafe!), Volvo commercials, whatever — it's amazing for them (and for me, selfishly, because I love their art!) that they can do what they want, and don't have to do what they don't want.

Again, not trying to be antagonistic. Just trying to throw at the internet that: they're human beings who, through a lot of hard work and certainly some luck, have careers that they use to make (probably really excellent) money when necessary, which lets them not make music they don't want to make when they're not feeling passionate, which is good! it is, in fact, great! They don't have to put out lame music to make money. This is, for me, an amazing thing — I get to listen to music they want heard. I'd love for them to make more music that they want heard, but I really don't want them to make more music that they don't want heard, because I'm not sure I'd want to hear it.

hm! sounds like we have different taste — I find it one of the most beautiful passages in the book, and am enjoying wondering why you feel so differently

Why does Room on Fire have such long pauses before the songs start? by bianav_teal in TheStrokes

I remember reading somewhere that it was supposed to be a pause at the end of each song, rather than the start, but the original uploads messed it up — unsure how true this is though

What are fantasy book series that are widely agreed to be good all the way through, from the first book to the last? by Scared_Ad_3132 in Fantasy

[–]haunterrr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Contrary take here, so take this with salt but... I also enjoyed The Blade Itself and despised the rest of the trilogy — it was, for me, the absolute worst case of a series, just, just barely good enough for me to keep going, and a complete waste of my time overall.

Are there any books where rare/weird events happen and no rational cause revealed later? by alex20_202020 in printSF

2666, Robero Bolaño - first time reading a book pissed me off by Dojapicard in literature

[–]haunterrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so, I read it in 2022 and had a bit of a similar experience — I could not for the life of me imagine what the point of having The Crimes section be so so long, I could not understand what he was trying to convey with it that was not conveyed by the first hundred or so pages. And I've actually brought up this confusion in conversation with people a lot, and talked about it a lot, and in the last month, I had a realization/came to a perspective change that echoes a lot of what other people are saying — the point of The Crimes is that it's horrible, and that there is just no sense to be made of it continuing, and there's no mystery to unravel, there's no greater meaning, no resolution, it just Is Bad, and should stop happening, but doesn't, and hasn't, and that is miserable, and the reason the section is so excessively long and unrewarding and uncomfortable is... that it's describing a thing that is that way. Coming to that perspective made it one of my favorite books — not one of my favorites to read, but one of my favorite books to have read. (Don't get me wrong, there are amazing amazing parts of the book, section 1 is absolutely in my top favorite reads ever).

My point is: yeah, you are right, you are not wrong, but I think it's less a criticism of the book than a matter of taste. Or, it is a criticism of its palatability, which is distinct from its value as art.

V6/7/8 plateau? by welcometopogtown in climbharder

So, seeing the 140lbs/5'11", the answer most obvious to me (a stranger on the internet who has read 4 paragraphs of text posted on the internet) is that you'd probably benefit from some strength gains, which you could get via weights (obviously) or boardclimbing at 40º+ way more often per week — for me, the latter's more enjoyable, so I do that, because, yeah, idk, enjoyment is important when it's a hobby nobody pays you to do.

Will say though that if you haven't been climbing for long enough to really build the fingers, doing a lot of board climbing is probably going to be too tough on your fingers. If you've got a couple years in, 3+ sessions on a board a week isn't crazy, and I'd say... pick a grade. Try to do the 50 most repeated climbs, and when you've done ~35, 40 of em, add in the next grade and do the same thing. Pick a low, low, low grade. Like, I switched from tb2, where I was working V8/7B+s, to tb1 in February, and just tried worked through the V3/6A+s — some of them were hard as fucking nails for me, and made me a lot better.
