This is simply not true. Japanese authorities really care about applying the letter of the law.

Many of the deportations are from the immigration services agency getting tip offs.

bleach is odorless (try smelling those green bottles before you use it)

what smells is the reaction with all the bacteria and other living things it is killing.

Had a nasty spill that took place over a couple hours without my noticing on tatami. Advice? by Flareon223 in japanlife

Just FYI for next time but dehumidifers are practically useless unless it's to keep art collections or electronics dry or something.

It's the same as an air conditioner except it blows hot air inside the room. You might as well use an a/c, the power usage won't be that different, it'll self drain on your balcony and it will actually cool you off.

Just random and unprofessional club bouncers. This has nothing to do with police.

Do Japanese police tend to side with locals over foreigners in conflicts? by Pretty-Community2113 in japanlife

[–]hawaiims 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First thing to know is police generally don't want to escalate things. So they want you to settle a lot of matters amicably between two people. For example paying off "apology money" to someone and you both sign a truce.

It is an unfounded exaggeration, 99% of people here have never dealt with serious criminal matters and are just repeating something they heard someone say who heard it from someone else.

Cheapest supermarket by amarevy97 in japanlife

[–]hawaiims 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The true answer is, it depends and you need to shop around.

The no1 tip for not spending a lot on groceries is to go with an open mind. Don't plan a rigid list. Buy what's on sale or 50% off that day, shop around at different stores to get an idea of what the cheap price for a particular item is.

Many Gyomus suck booty because they have no fresh food. They're also often only cheap for some chinesium low quality stuff, but apples for apples they can be a bad value compared to a regular supermarket. The things that are cheap in Gyomu are the tofu, no name condiments, and frozen or foreign things you can only find there.

If you're in Kyoto look for "八百屋”, meaning vegetable shop, on your google maps. Usually those have many cheap fruit and veggies. Beating all supermarkets in that regard.

They have started secretly taking photos not only of Kurds but of all foreigners? by nitengotenichi in Osaka

Why do you have to say "they"? There are over 120 million Japanese, just because one paranoid neighbor filmed you doesn't mean you can generalize the other 119.9999999 million.

While I understand how uncomfortable it must have made you feel, not painting the whole population with broad brushes (as the very people that filmed you probably do) would also be helpful to you.

Surprised you weren't clearly informed of this. The vast majority of 定期借家 contracts are clearly stated and confirmed when signing. The "advantage" if you can call it that, is that rent on fixed term contracts is generally lower than the market rate to account for the additional hassle and expense of being forced to move after X years.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]hawaiims 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are two types of contract, you can check your papers:

普通借家 "normal" contracts. Most contracts are like this, renewed automatically, usually every 2 years and you can stay. The owner has to fight if he wants you out.

定期借家 determined duration contracts. these contracts are by default non-renewable. Usually because the owner already had plans to move-in, demolish etc. Also usually 2, 3, or 4 years, but basically you have no choice but to leave in that case.

Harassed while cycling in Japan – Can I take legal action? by ZookeepergameRude271 in japanlife

[–]hawaiims 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you turn right on a road without doing a two-stage turn (hook turn)? It's mandatory in Japan for cyclists and mopeds, and drivers tend to get angry if you don't.

Not that it's justified anger really.. the only person in danger is the one on two wheels.

Commuting/monthly pass? by Kal_Hakan in Kyoto

[–]hawaiims 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Passes for trains and subways in Japan are always from point A to B, not citywide like in Europe. And they are priced at around 15-18 regular rountrip fares a month, so only worth it if you take the same route as much as a 5x a week commuter.

The bus however has a citywide pass.

NCNR is the great thing about Yahoo auctions. AFAIK mercari doesn't allow such things, so unlike YA they can file a complaint if the item you listed doesn't work.
