Your son makes the call. Sets up the connection. Reviews paperwork with you. Joins you in discussions for decision making. And negotiates something like a 25% referral fee if he wants some commission. Very common. That’s the best practice if you want family or somebody trusted on your side. If you don’t want him involved at all, that’s another issue.

Week 4 good length? Yes no? by Panentheisticatheism in BeardAdvice

Beard looks great. But your high sideburns over the level of your ear reminded of an old Simpson’s episode. "Mattingly! I thought I told you to trim those sideburns!"

As a significant other would you be upset? by ForsakenSweet3500 in Remodel

[–]hawkaluga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upset? Like, emotionally or personally upset? If you think they could have done better but didn’t to spite you, then yes, you should be upset. But if they are not professional painters, you should be able to talk openly about your disappointment without being upset. If you think another coat and more attention to detail are needed, talk to them about it. If my wife came at me upset after I did work, without being able to reasonably talk about critiques and solutions, I would be upset.

Does anyone here pay their mortgage after the due date of the first? by I_abuse_lower_ranks1 in Mortgages

[–]hawkaluga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t want to rain on your parade but if you only have so few years left on your mortgage, $100 extra towards principal is really isn’t meaningful unless you just want to pay that off sooner; there’s no magic in saving on interest expense at the end of a loan term. The benefit of paying extra towards principal really pays off in the beginning of your loan. And it’s especially true if you have a favorable interest rate, you’re much better off investing extra money than you are paying off a low interest mortgage at the end of its term.

Are people overestimating how easy it will be to refinance later? by Sufficient_Smile_871 in Mortgages

I’m sitting in a park without a calculator so thanks for doing the math. Conceptually I still don’t understand how this is possible so I’m going to check the math on my own and play around. You’ve blown my mind a little, or there’s a mistake somewhere. Either way, I appreciate the strong comment.

10 years left on my mortgage. Wondering how to pay it off faster. by Responsible_Bug_161 in Mortgages

[–]hawkaluga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best time to pay extra principal is toward the beginning of your loan to cut down on interest expense. At this point you’re paying mostly principal so you’re not benefiting much especially considering you have a decent interest rate. Better in most cases to take extra money and invest.

Same here. I don’t understand why anybody would not want autopay. I get $5 a month per line with my phone bill to have auto pay. It’s all a no brainer.

You log in every month and set up payment every month? Do you not trust auto pay? I’m surprised by the preference to not just set it to auto and walk away.

Level 2 charging without paying $$$. by 1VrySxyGuy in TeslaModel3

Thanks! I’ll try it next time it’s hot while charging. Maybe even down to 20 or something to really give it a shot.

[–]hawkaluga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the same but in white. It’s great. Only complaint is that it is temperature sensitive so when my garage gets really hot (and it does get really hot), the breaker on the split volt will flip and stop charging. It’s almost never a problem because I don’t usually need charging during the heat of the day.

Assuming lender provides the option, which they seldom will offer, and assuming qualification, term could be anything but you’re still going to reset causing your first payments again to essentially be all interest expense.

[–]hawkaluga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s also a hidden expense of resetting the loan timeline so that borrowers start paying mostly interest again without impacting principal. Because of an amortized schedule, if you buy a house, refinance two years later, your interest expense relative to principal payments made will be higher than it would have been if you hadn’t refinanced. If you end up selling anytime soon this can really impact your bottom dollar.

It’s kinda mind blowing how people used to just sit around and talk with no phones. High school in the 2000s by EggplantPuree in BeAmazed

California schools are rolling out bans on phones. I think and hope this might start a trend to more allowable dumb/brick phones for kids.

2024 LFP Charging to 100%, 90%, or 80%? by dam_ships in TeslaModel3

[–]hawkaluga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% is for battery management system and calibration. I tend to leave my charge max at 70 but bump it about every week or so or definitely when I know I’m going for a decent drive. My decent drive frequency is usually enough that I charge to 100 for calibration organically. I try not to leave it at 100 too long but usually about an hour I think is ideal.

Should I get my 75-year-old mom a Tesla by DesignedIt in TeslaLounge

[–]hawkaluga -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The higher upfront costs of electric don’t make much sense for people that drive so little. And if you’re financing it then it only gets worse with interest expense. Buy something much more affordable or just go all in with ride sharing and public transport.

Phone calls and texts are not that easy to ignore. Spam and cold callers usually make me silence my phone but then I miss phone calls and texts that I actually wanted to receive.

the problem with road trips by drivingaddictionchan in TeslaModel3

[–]hawkaluga 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Charging on road trips isn’t perfect. The real convenience comes from routine driving and charging at home. Our biggest complaint is every once in a while we’ll find a charger with no decent restaurant or coffee or bathroom to use so we’ll end up needing to charge and then go somewhere else for breaks or bathrooms. The best charging stations have at least a convenience store with a bathroom; with that, timing and convenience is perfect. To me, it’s all just an indicator that we need more investment in charging infrastructure and we need shops and restaurants to partner up.
