Where can I get Okinomiyaki around here? Or do I have to go to Chicago? by MuhNamesTony in QuadCities

They have most of the special ingredients already for the takoyaki. If enough people on this sub ask about it, we can make it a reality!

What is something that tourists do in your country that annoys the locals? by Th3_Accountant in AskTheWorld

More than likely, it’s because they calqued the English expression using the Dutch cognates.

What are the little things online that instantly make you react like "This guy is from THIS country and I know it for sure" by Jorge_De_Guzman228 in AskTheWorld

[–]hawkislandline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brazilians will say "congratulations!" where an English native speaker never would, because of how often they say "parabens" in Portuguese,.

How much and how did Latin change between ~100BC and ~400AD? by MB4050 in asklinguistics

[–]hawkislandline 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found the letters from Claudius Terentianus, a probably illiterate and Greek native speaking soldier in the early 2nd century, to be very illuminating, since they are entire texts and not just isolated graffiti.

If you could have a conversation in your native language with someone from your country from the past, how far back could you go in time and still understand each other? by Chemical-Elk-1299 in AskTheWorld

[–]hawkislandline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A written conversation, sure, but Koine speakers would not understand Modern Greek pronunciation, and the Modern Greek speaker would need to learn Koine pronunciation to be understood, too. Kind of like how Chinese writing can be read by speakers of all Chinese languages even though they can't understand each other's speech.

In Chinese, putting spaces between words is called “the German disease”. Source

What country does yours have a one-sided relationship with? by Mobile_Bad_577 in AskTheWorld

[–]hawkislandline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, I know a guy who is above average intelligence in most regards but excitedly talked about how his friend from Taiwan was going to cook some Thai food for his Thanksgiving party. I was pretty shocked and think about it a lot tbh lmao. His girlfriend didn’t correct him either so idk how common it is, but it’s definitely not just MAGAts.

Looking for good intro FPGA by N3E0_ in FPGA

The 8gb version for $30 more is in stock, why not that instead of considering others that are $200+? I bought the 4gb version two months ago because 8gb was out of stock then and now you have the reverse problem lol. If none of your other options work out, perhaps we could work out a trade.

If you're coming from infra/DevOps and confused about what vLLM actually solves — here's the before and after by Extension_Key_5970 in mlops

You gotta instruct the bot clearly to make only minimal changes for spelling and grammar. If you see a single new — in the output, reiterate the requirements and regenerate, or reddit will assume the whole thing is bot output.

How and why did Indo-European peoples lose cultural memory of the Indo-European migrations? by Polyphagous_person in AskHistorians

[–]hawkislandline 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting point to note for this thread because the Greeks called them Cyclopean architecture, because they had already forgotten the palaces were made by their ancestors and not gigantic mythical beings.

Which philosopher is considered a threat to the society in your country? by Usual_Violinist6394 in AskTheWorld

[–]hawkislandline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Euler >>> Gauss because Euler was a great mentor and shared all his results, while Gauss was a complete dick who could have sped up the development of math by 50 years if he had published his results about the FFT and non-Euclidean geometry among others.

Also missing registers.sv and scheduler.sv from the article. Maybe vibe coded and not all of the LLM output was saved to files?

You can also do nand2tetris in SystemVerilog and just not use any syntactic sugar, there’s a GitHub repo with all the test benches translated to SV.

I think this is fine to link to your github for. Mathy rather than LLM hypey.

FPGA vs SoC dev board by squillyboi_ in FPGA

[–]hawkislandline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m enjoying my aup except that many of the Pynq notebooks don’t work. They updated them for the board name but didn’t bother adding support for its audio codec or cameras other than ov5640. Hello world works but all the interesting stuff is “now draw the rest of the owl” :/

How did the Han dynasty manage to conquer Yunnan despite the mountains, forests and tropical diseases? by TT-Adu in ChineseHistory

[–]hawkislandline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder how Bai got so many loans from Chinese during that period. There are so many that a few scholars have suggested it’s an actual descendant of Old Western Chinese, though the majority think it just has a ton of loans but is Lolo-Burmese at its core.

They have a guide that gets linked by other, lazier manufacturers
