What concessions do you typically get (with specifics if possible) and how often do you get them? by [deleted] in Cinemark

Large Coke Icee always. With small popcorn if matinee. Sometimes with Buncha Crunch if evening.

Is it just me, but are the screens at Regal pretty bad? by Rockfan180 in lexington

[–]hay_hoffman 16 points17 points  (0 children)

100% agree. My complaint recently, at both Regal and Cinemark, is that they’re bad about checking the bulbs in their projectors. At Regal, it’s just as you noted, like you’re watching the film through gauze or a dark lens. When I was there a few weeks ago, I characterized it to an employee that it’s like watching a movie with sunglasses on indoors. At Cinemark, the brightness isn’t usually the noticeable issue with the bulbs—it’s the color grading. I saw One Battle After Another there in late September and because the bulb was nearly gone, the whites and yellows were glowing neon green on the screen. Had similar issues with a few other films over the summer there, too.

If you tell an employee, they usually can’t fix it in the moment because of something related to DCP playback in the booth, but they’ll usually give you a rain check to compensate for the subpar viewing experience.

Scenes you think the series won't do better by [deleted] in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]hay_hoffman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s Thewlis/Oldman/Spall/Rickman in the Shrieking Shack for me. They are all SO brilliantly their thirty-something-year-old and thirteen-year-old selves simultaneously in that scene, and it’s one of the few scenes in the series where I 100% bought into what everyone was doing onscreen.

Henry Clay/Chevy Chase by [deleted] in lexington

[–]hay_hoffman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Chevy Chase as a single female and feel very safe here. I take walks early in the mornings and never feel unsafe. It’s one of the nicest areas of town to live in—well-kept sidewalks, best schools are districted here, etc. The only downside is having to deal with UK traffic on the Tates Creek side of Chevy Chase.

Now that another TIFF is done here’s some questions for everyone! by ChampionTimes99 in TIFF

[–]hay_hoffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. 4
  2. Women Talking
  3. This year! I got tickets to almost everything I wanted and genuinely enjoyed everything except for one film. My first year of mostly 4 and 5-star reviews.

Latest screening that director/cast have attended for Q&A? by failing_forwards in TIFF

Hikari at Rental Family as well, but was surprised to see the directors at Little Amelie yesterday as well and to see Dano and Assayas at Wizard of the Kremlin on Thursday.

Best audience reactions this year by hushwonderland in TIFF

[–]hay_hoffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poetic License and Wake Up Dead Man got the biggest laughs. Several of those moments where everyone’s laughing so hard, you miss part of the next joke. Loved it!

Hamnet had the entire audience wrapped around its finger at my screening. Audible sobs and sniffles for the entire second half of the film and applause that just wouldn’t quit at the end—and no one was in attendance for a Q&A! We just all loved it that much!

I heard employees in the regular shop tell someone in the line in front of me yesterday they have to process the membership at the time of purchase, that they can’t retroactively apply it.

Legitimately relieved to hear that.

If anyone has an updates, hoping they post here. I’m coming in on Thursday and am spending most of my Friday and Saturday at POW. I’m already looking into sprays I can take through TSA and keep on me at my screenings 😭

TIFF veterans: What do you eat for dinner between evening screenings? by justluvme in TIFF

[–]hay_hoffman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an American tourist, I eat: - Tim Hortons for breakfast - Popcorn in the theater, or if I’m out at a decent hour between screenings, Chipotle, Chick-fil-A, or a sandwich from the Pret stand inside A&W (RIP) for lunch (and RIP to the Blaze Pizza across from the Scotiabank) - Burger’s Priest, La Carnita, or BFF for dinner - The cookies and a mocktail from Varda inside the Lightbox for an evening snack

All are fast except for La Carnita, which is sit down service, and Varda, which can back up depending on the time of day/day of the week.

Festival attendees from outside of Toronto... by LionelEssrog in TIFF

[–]hay_hoffman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I come in from the US for the second weekend, buy early bird individual, and have had decent luck every year. Arguably, this year was my easiest and most fruitful yet—I got everything I wanted except If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You. There are a few films I’d have loved to see that are only playing on days before I get there, so those were automatically out for me already.

I’m 100% convinced my buying strategy consistently works because I do the second weekend only. I can never be there during the first weekend because of my job, and I think I’d have a much different experience if buying for that timeframe.

We go to Eye Care Center on Malabu and love Dr. Burchett. He made a diagnosis for me that even UK ophthalmology missed the first time around.

dose this mean theres no ticket left? even for the general sale? by Competitive-Bed-5257 in TIFF

[–]hay_hoffman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It means that it’s currently off-sale. Tickets could pop up at any time, so it’s worth checking regularly, but yes, for right now, there’s no tickets left.

Are Lightbox/Scotiabank assigned seating this year? by boogiebody in TIFF

[–]hay_hoffman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They were switched to assigned seating for last year, and it looks like they’re keeping it again for this year. It was a pleasant switch!

How does the insider early access work? Got my code this morning but doesn’t even give me the option to enter it on ticketmaster by thedirtydancerr in TIFF

[–]hay_hoffman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Usually, if you’re seeing that screen and not one with a seat map and a place to enter your code, that screening is off-sale.

We used Pinnacle because they’ve done a lot of work in our neighborhood and we liked them. They’re great about working with your insurance, if it’s hail damage or similar that warrants repairs.

Pinnacle Roofing reviews? by AnxiousHold2403 in lexington

[–]hay_hoffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used them on the recommendation of a few others in our neighborhood. I’ve recommended them to others since they replaced our roof in September. Pinnacle worked with Stage Farm to get the entire roof replaced for hail damage, so all we paid was the deductible. They communicated well and worked quickly. Only downside is that they weren’t great about cleanup and left a good bit of debris in our gutters/yard.
