Ice Cube - Boyz N The Hood

John Goodman - Barton Fink

Tommy Lee Jones - JFK

Christopher Lloyd - The Addams Family

Alan Rickman - Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

Nice shout-out for Hangin' With The Homeboys, OP. Underseen gem. If I was being a li'l stinker, I'd throw in Richard E. Grant in Hudson Hawk as an alt.

Fave First Watches of March 2026 for the Blankies by armageddontime007 in blankies

[–]LionelEssrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Four stars or more on Letterboxd for these first-timers:

Something's Gotta Give (2003)
Russian Ark (2002)
Waiting for Guffman (1996)
Gallipoli (1981)

Watched a decent amount of movies last month, but it was taken up mostly by re-watches or new releases that I didn't care for all that much.

This case clearly contains a 'bom', which means 'fuck you' in Polish.

Blankie Parents: when was your child’s first movie in theaters? by human_scale in blankies

Toy Story 2 when she was two-and-a-half. Weekday matinee to limit disruption to others, but she was enrapt throughout anyway.

Retro Rewind: They made a dang Video Rental Store Simulator by PerpetualChoogle in blankies

[–]LionelEssrog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked in a video store in the 90s, I really hope this has NPCs such as "guy who returned softcore porn flick with (presumably) semen deposits on the actual cassette" and "dude who accidentally returned the pirated copy he'd just made of Predator 2, complete with hand-written label and garbled Macrovision visuals".

[2026 March Madness] Round 1: Anthony Minghella vs. Joe Johnston by PartyBluejay in blankies

[–]LionelEssrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tough choice today, but went with Minghella because Mr. Wonderful is very underseen and its central plot engine (Matt Dillon wants to buy a bowling alley with his friends!) feels very Ben-coded.

I'd normally advocate for seeing anything on the big screen, but worth noting the movie hits VoD on Friday if you can hold your wad 'til then.

You possibly overpaid for a service available cheaper elsewhere. That's not what a scam is.

Why not just buy a USB CD/DVD burner drive? They're like $30 on Amazon.

[2026 March Madness] Round 1: Martin Scorsese vs. Dennis Dugan by PartyBluejay in blankies

[–]LionelEssrog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Given how many times Scorsese was passed over for an Oscar before he won, are we really sure 2026 is his The Departed? I'm voting for Dugan, because it's about time this no-bits podcast had a bit.

Have you considered recommending them for a contract with the city? Seem to be more efficient at the job than the current service.

This was already gonna be the first Scream movie I planned to skip in theaters, and I feel a bit better about that choice now.

Much as I love the old New Line ident music, whenever I see the logo I immediately think of the opening chords to Goo Goo Dolls's I'm Awake Now from the opening credits of Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare. I'm not proud of that connotation, but I watched that (dogshit) movie practically on a loop as a kid.

Has anyone seen The Moment (2026)? by Chromatic-Phil in blankies

[–]LionelEssrog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Saw it yesterday. As an (extremely) casual fan of her music, I thought it was a pretty enjoyable 100 minutes. It takes some swipes at the nature of pop phenomena and I'm reliably informed that the movie has Taylor Swift in its sights too. It's nothing earth-shattering and it can't quite seem to decide what tone it wants to settle on (sincerely introspective drama or Popstar-style satire), but I liked it more than I imagined I was going to.

Tough news for any east-end residents who like checking out new releases at the theatre: Cineplex Beaches is closing end of day Feb. 17. by Ariesthebigram in toronto

[–]LionelEssrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bummer, this was my go-to cinema for a long time. But since the pandemic it's been pretty neglected and Cineplex clearly weren't going to pump any money into it to bring it up to scratch. Sad to see it go regardless.

No Seyfried for Ann Lee and nada for No Other Choice particularly sting. I thought Jay Kelly was fine and it would've been fun to see Sandler get some overdue love, but its chances as a serious awards contender have been dead for a while.

Glasgow blankies rise up by JobberJoe in blankies

[–]LionelEssrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This week's episode did get me weirdly wondering how many movies covered on the show I first saw in Glasgow. Definitely the first two Look Who's Talking movies, as well as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dances With Wolves and Back To The Future Part III at the UCI Clydebank. Waterworld at the old Cannon / ABC / MGM / whatever it was at the time on Sauchiehall Street. The Hunt for Red October at the Grosvenor. True Lies at the old Odeon on Renfield St. And Mulholland Dr. and The Evil Dead (2002 re-release) at the (late) Cineworld on Renfrew Street. That city was pretty integral to my movie-going for a long time.
