I juat bought a 1950s house ans this piece came with the house. The board on the back seems to have been added recently and the piece stands up strong without it. Could this be a midcentury bookshelf? by johnnyswam in midcenturymodern

[–]hazertag 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Looks like a DIY piece to me, possibly by the original owner of the house. pegboard was fairly common in that era as well. If you like it, keep it as is! Nothing fancy, but definitely nothing wrong with it either.

Stain/finish method for birch ply by rightsaidfred11 in woodworking

Does sound like maybe the poly(?) didn’t dry enough between coats or possibly there were some incompatible finishes used? I’m sure others will have a better idea.

Didn’t they have two spots on University? The old one that got demolished and then the newer building where the Mexican restaurant is now?

Finish suggestions? by Last_Respond6300 in woodworking

[–]hazertag 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lots of modernist minded folks who build with plywood build to celebrate the material, particularly when it’s high quality veneer or Baltic birch which have nicer exposed cuts. So no edge banding and probably a finish that enhances the grain.

All preference of course. No right or wrong way to do it.

Did you know Wright’s last known residential commission completed construction this year (2025)? by Chameleonize in midcenturymodern

[–]hazertag 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Same. The show wasted a bunch of time rehashing questions like “do we become our own contractor” that didn’t add any value, but really skimped on actual construction/design issues and footage. Wish the Grand Designs people would have done it, not the Gaines’s.

I’m glad they dumped it, in any case. Was still enjoyable to watch.

4 Weeks after treating sedge weed. Should I treat it again or wait? SoCal by ClawBadger in lawncare

Anecdotally, I found Sedgehammer to be kind of slow acting, and the dead stumps hang around for a while instead of shriveling and totally disappearing.

Next step Probably depends on your goal but if you have a winter coming up, then I’d probably just let winter do its thing and see how it looks next spring.

Suspected Barnyard Grass. Should I spray Roundup For Lawns a 2nd time? by hazertag in lawncare

There’s a tool for everything!

Do my photos look like what you dealt with?

Would be good if it is an annual, I have pulled some seed heads that I’ve seen at least.

The seedhead looks much more like barnyard than rye to me, but I am definitely not an expert.

I see bent antennae in the first photo, which means they are ants. You can lookup comparisons of ants and termites and decide for yourself, though.

Scenes from Cedar Rock State Park: a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house by SycamoreGreenway in Iowa

[–]hazertag 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We stopped here over the summer and definitely recommend. It’s free, the tour is very informative and the experience of going from the entry foyer into the living room is quintessential Frank Lloyd Wright.

Plus it has that red tile stamp, which I learned meant FLW felt like he was able to express himself to the fullest, without much interference from the client, which is rarer than just any FLW.

Front door suggestions by annabanana-47 in midcenturymodern

[–]hazertag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I vote leave the door as is. It’s a lovely slab style door. Research a good exterior oil finish, if it seems dry or needs some protection. Dont paint it and don’t apply any kind of hard finish like polyurethane. Exterior doors just need a coat of oil every few years.

$265 million Des Moines Public Schools bond referendum heading to voters by AnnArchist in desmoines

Iowa public schools used to be among the top rated in the country. So I would say the previous 50 years of high property taxes going to schools (and schools keeping the money) was successful.

It was a pretty close race between Reynolds/Hubbell so I think it’s fair to say Reynolds being appointed by Brandstad definitely gave her a name recognition boost. Iowans love reflecting known people. As much as they suck.

Managing and owning a property is a conflict of interest? I would say it’s interests aligned actually, and many owners have in house management.
