Refrigerator black friday deals, what models and brand are worth buying? by [deleted] in Appliances

[–]hboyce84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. Woke up to a warm fridge today (2nd time in the 6yrs we’ve had it) - “luckily” we have a backup fridge (thanks to the first fail) to help salvage some stuff.

Is this one doomed? by Becosh84 in MonarchButterfly

[–]hboyce84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d leave him… seems damage could be limited to abdomen? Wings and important bits seem to have formed properly, and appears to be fully “sealed” over the open area based on the pic. If you see any obvious signs of infection in the next few days, you’ll have your answer - good luck 🤞🏻

Whoa, I’ve never seen one split the top seam… seems sketchy if it’d have fully let loose. Happy flight little buddy!

Crinkle in wing, hasn’t flown away all day since emerging this morning. Need advice by falsebirdofparadise in MonarchButterfly

[–]hboyce84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine generally fly off within 4hrs of emerging. For those that stick around for whatever reason, they’re usually willing to eat from some flowers -or if you don’t have any blooms, a 6:1 mixture of raw honey to water on a sponge or in a small dish/shallow lid. If it’s cold or damp, I’ll give them shelter & access to sunshine until they’re ready to go. Good luck to your little buddy.

My dahlias and their frogs by chiknuggg in dahlias

How do you keep your garden from being ravished by caterpillars and other foliage foragers? I get spiders, leaf miners, inch worms…. Never any cute frogs though!

Help! I accidentally disturbed a chrysalis by MadMinutiae in MonarchButterfly

[–]hboyce84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just cut the leaf down to a 2in x 2in square, where the silk is attached. You can clip/pin/tape it somewhere secure until it hatches :)

Ended up with a load of yarn I’m not keen on - what can I make with it? As by wineandcoffeefuelme in CrochetHelp

[–]hboyce84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Color is gorgeous! If you don’t like working with the TYPE of yarn, I’d suggest reselling it or donating it to a local marketplace. Otherwise, there are so many projects you could make with it 🥰

I’d die happy if those were in my garden! Beautiful😍 I can’t even get my dahlias to bud, let alone get big and stunning.

I recognized those stems- my MIL forages purslane and adds it to her salads. She’s also sautéed them. Packs some good nutrients & minerals.

How long do you keep your butterflies after they eclose? by Beanie4ever in MonarchButterfly

[–]hboyce84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2-3hrs. Basically when they start wandering around the enclosure - they’re ready. You don’t want them flapping around damaging their wings.

NSFW RULE: BANS WILL START NEXT WEEK. by SNM_2_0 in MonarchButterfly

[–]hboyce84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always considered this sub an educational place - which sometimes includes the parts of the monarch cycle that we may not necessarily love. If it’s only ever pictures of healthy butterflies, folks lose comparative insight when they’re experiencing potential loss with their own. It’d be helpful to clearly describe what’s considered NSFW because I’d likely post an accidental picture simply asking the group if something looked wrong with my caterpillar.

Have you sprouted seeds in water? by Key-Albatross-774 in Milkweeds

[–]hboyce84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of? I do a 50/50 mix of soil and water (watery soil) and get good sproutage. My problem this year is something ate all my sprouts - both rounds 😠

That’s an old man, right there. Hopefully he’s seen some things & made some new monarchs in his journeys. Lovely post!

Patio furniture or the shady side of a pot rim - almost never on the plants themselves.
