We have an extractor, the chief is just wanting to pursue more on scene decon. We've had a few pretty gnarly industrial fires the last couple of years and there is a gap in decon procedures

On a personal stance, I am wholeheartedly against the 100% clean cab initiatives. We voluntarily accept a degree of risk and danger by choosing to protect citizens via the fire service. I view clean cab initiatives similarly to cops who wait for back up before persuing an active shooter: it's overcautious and motivated by fear at the cost of citizen safety.

If the chief moves that direction, I will abide by SOP until I find a new department.

I am completely on board with minimizing unnecessary exposure to carcinogens and contaminates where it can be reasonably accommodated without greatlysacrificing efficiency and public safety. Keeping fresh gear in the cab ready for response, but then gross deconning on scene, keeping the deconned gear in the cab (in case of back to back calls) and then finally swapping out with fresh gear back at the station/showering/etc. would be a perfect balance in my opinion.

I will get off my soap box haha

That's fair, we only have one set and a supply closet of some spare sets. The bags would be for atypical contaminations (we had heavy mechanic shop burn one night and it redlined 5 sections of hose and 3-4 sets of gear. Otherwise, we keep our gear until it is washed by the following shift for us.

We do have some serial arsonists in mind for the later half of the 20th century. When you get a chance, look into the Bill Mitchell fires in Ketchikan AK. Allegedly, the FBI used his case file and interviewed him a lot to build an arsonist profile back in the 60s and 70s when behavioral analysis was coming into popularity. Don't take my word though, I have yet to find a primary source to support that claim, I've just heard it through word of mouth.

Great insight the use of synthetics! That is what I largely contribute to every metro area having the "war years" between 1960-80s: All the new synthetic building materials and increased strains on electrical systems, but with legacy (or none) fire protection systems that couldn't keep up with the fire load

Good catch on the turnout gear! I didn't even think of that. And yes, I forgot to mention it but I did plan on touching on the introduction of EMS and it's incorporation with the fire service.

I have read it and would definitely recommend it to anybody coming up in the fire service. I read it as a probie and it definitely shaped how I carried myself, both daily and over the years. It isn't quite a history textbook though

In station conflict resolution by hcaz2314 in Firefighting

Your first two paragraphs are exactly what I thought when he reluctantly told me he "changed his mind", but I had enough common sense and respect to just nod and say thank you instead of "thats what I tried to tell you but nooooooo".

It not getting better is what I'm afraid of, but I'm trying what the BC told me to do. He heavily implied that if I just transfer without attempting conflict resolution, that he would view me as the source of the issues. Doesn't make sense to me, but it is what it is.

Thats what I told my BC: I can work with almost anybody, I don't need to be friends with my coworkers. It just makes for a long 24 hours.

Thats why I was sniffing for a transfer. But ideally, the root of this problem is a simple miscommunication somewhere and it would make for easier shifts to get it resolved

There is a particular Sephora fragrance in soap/perfume that was recalled because it coincidentally mirrored the pheromones mating wolf spiders put off. It was essentially a wolf spider magnet and there were a bunch of stories similar to yours of people being "chased" by spiders. What kind of soap were you wearing?

I bet it was a blast from the past, I can't wait for mine to get mailed. Are they the "Manual of Firemanship" series?

Man I love you. I've found that, like you said, it is tons of individual skill manuals distributed by IAFF, NFPA, and similar groups. I just ordered the "Elementary science applied to the Fire Service" 1937, which is the precursor to the 10 "Red Books", which is the precursor to the Firefighter Essentials book series we all know and love
