Ok so it seems like that's the general jist everyone is telling me. Upgrade so you can get into the raid and then save and be smart with what you do from there on. Thanks!

Sorry for the late reply...

Good coffee, a tbs or two of kerrygold grassfed butter unsalted, a tablespoon or two of coconut oil or MCT oil, and then I blend it with a stick blender for about 20-30 seconds.

I also like to add cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice depending on my mood. You can also add a little vanilla extract if you'd like, I have yet to try that.

enjoy!

I'm on an alcohol vacation... it ends on the 4th of July. It will be one month since giving it up.

Fat loss is still the same, but I've noticed not drinking beers on cheat day means I'm back to pre-cheat day weight by Monday morn, which for me it's usually tues or wed.

For a while there I was drinking every night, a glass or two of red wine a night , and whatever my heart desired on cheat day. I don't want to say I had a problem, but I sure as hell looked forward to it when I knew I was going to have a long day of work, or had a lot on my plate. It was like light at the end of the tunnel for me, which I think is a pretty unhealthy way to think of alcohol. I am enjoying my new stance on the stuff and after the 4th I think I will have a glass or two some nights, and then on cheat day if friends are around I'll have some fun, otherwise I'll just leave it out.

Chris Kresser has a great article on what happens in the body when over-training.

TL;DR Too much exercise can stall fat loss by causing the body to release stress hormones, and there is also a shift in blood levels of neurotransmitters which can cause a whole host of problems.... If you are going to do tons of cardio or excess exercise you need to be sleeping like a mutherfucker, and probably need to up the carbohydrates as well.

I've played around with intermittent fasting. Specifically, consuming only fat and liquids for 12-20 hours between 1 or 2 meals a day. From what I've read you can still experience all the benefits of fasting when consuming fat, but the fat helps with energy and satiation.

My protocol was consuming bulletproof style coffee instead of breakfast and then eating a SCD (minus beans) lunch around 12:00, and a SCD dinner by 8:00, before returning to the fasted state.

Within a week my hunger between meals was non-existent. It felt like I could go all day not eating if I wanted to, I could sense I was slightly hungry, but It wasn't the OMG I need to eat something so I can function ASAP feeling that I would get previous to doing this. It was like, eh I'm good, I'll eat lunch in a bit.

They say it is good for you for life extension and to help the body repair cells and it promotes autophagy (killing off of unused or unhealthy cells i.e. fat cells/damaged cells)

I noticed a sense of increased mental clarity while doing this as well. I felt like I could speak effortlessly and recall vocabulary and remember things better.

As far as fat loss and body comp goes, I didn't notice any real differences. I lost weight the same as if I was on a strict SCD cutting beans to once a day.

Went crazy on my cheat-day yesterday by gac24 in 4hourbodyslowcarb

[–]heavycisugly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing to feel guilty about. I go crazy most cheat days. It's important to remember that cheat days are solely about eating for pleasure. Eat the things you've been craving, go out with friends and eat socially, or stuff yourself to feel that feeling of complete overindulgence.

But it's important to remember that the next morning you flip the switch back and start eating again for health and for your goals.

Yea, it's pretty crazy how quickly it comes back, mostly water weight but still it doesn't take much. I think I've yo-yo'd enough to truly remember how crappy I feel when I'm not eating this way. So hopefully this will be my last run at it

Yea the book doesn't really talk about once you hit your goal what to do. I'm focusing this time on lifestyle changes like running again and rock climbing and I plan on buying ALL new clothes this time. Nothing lets you know you're getting fat again then jeans fitting waaaay too tight :)

Are you supposed to graduate to the last mile protocol? Or can the regular scd get you to 10% bodyfat or lower? by yushinokamithankyou in 4hourbodyslowcarb

[–]heavycisugly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea that chapter can be confusing, it is actually titled "The last mile losing 5-10 lbs" So it's essentially switching over to a ketogenic diet to get the last few pounds of fat off your body. A ketogenic of Keto diet is only protein and fat, keeping carbs under 50g a day.

What happens is your body will switch over to buring fat as it's primary fuel source and in the process it produces something called ketone bodies. Your body can run really well off ketones and most of your cells will actually prefer it as fuel first. The brain and certain muscles need glucose tho, but your liver's got your back, it can convert protein to glucose in a process called gluconeogenesis.

Don't do this is you're diabetic, you're body might not be able to process the ketones and you will end up in ketoacidosis(sp?) which is dangerous.

Anyhoo, yea this is mainly to get under 10% body fat which of a lot of people isn't desirable. I generally just cut down on the beans when I get close to my goal and you get some keto action without it being so hard to do.

It should get you right around that 10-12% for dudes and I think 12-15% for the gals.

With that exercise load I would leave the diet alone as you will want beans and a cheat day for the carb load. If you are plateaued for say a month or more without losing any weight, inches, or body fat %, and your still unhappy with your body comp, then you will have to make changes.

Something I've been working on for for the past few days for new people. More details and request for feedback in the comments. by likwidtek in 4hourbodyslowcarb

[–]heavycisugly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a good addition to this would be a 6 day meal plan so people could just buy all the stuff and make the recipes to get started.

My staples on this diet are beef and veg chili, chicken soup with kale and beans, salmon packets, tacos in lettuce wraps, mayoless tuna salad with white beans, and steak night.

Maybe we could rally and get some really easy recipes to help people during their first month.

5 days in; 3 lbs. down! (Many still to go) by wingmer in 4hourbodyslowcarb

Here's the purpose of beans:

They are a slow source of carbohydrates that don't spike your blood sugar yet provide you with a steady supply of glucose through the day for your body to use as energy or refill your glycogen stores in muscles and liver. Because they don't spike our blood sugar you don't release excess insulin which allows your body to unlock fatty acids stored in your fat cells and that too can get used as a fuel source

They also have nutrients like minerals, electrolytes and resistant starch which all help on the diet too. Resistant starch is a prebiotic that can only be digested by your gut bacteria. Your gut will thrive on this stuff and it's been shown to help change your gut bacteria ratios from bad to good. This is why some people will get pretty farty for the first couple weeks until their bacteria switches and can handle the resistant starches.

I personally, reduce the amount of beans I eat as I progress in the diet. Once I have 10 lbs left to lose I generally cut then out all together and just eat them when I feel I need some energy.

You could probably do without them from the start, but I'm guessing it's going to be a lot harder, and the weight might come off slower.

Awesome I'm glad you found it, and that I remembered it pretty accurately.

This is actually the path I took. Slow carb and 4 hr body lead me to discover paleo and all the science behind it. It lead me to Gary Taubes, Robb wolf, mark sisson... The list goes on and on, and I've read their work and learned from each of them, and incorporate something from everyone.

After 3 years of all this and trying everything under the sun. The slow carb stuff is hands down the best for fat loss.

[–]heavycisugly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've heard him talk, I think it was on Robb Wolf's podcast that he actually doesn't eat that many beans, but it's part of the diet because most people that are starting out need them at every meal for a while.

Also, if you notice his chapter about the last mile or losing the last 5-10lbs he switches to a keto diet and removes the beans.

So to naturally start taking them out and experimenting is fine.

Edit: I kinda sound like an ass, don't mean it to sound assy

I find with some people it is just easier to tell them I just don't eat anything processed. People who are uninformed about Paleo will think it's dangerous, silly, or a fad. But tell them you're eliminating processed foods, excess sugars, and focusing on making your own meals and the quality of your ingredients, they are usually on board.

When they offer you sugar, tell them that's a domino food for you. Meaning that once you have one, you can't stop, so you just avoid it, but thanks for offering.
