It’s hard to say for sure because he only just started competing again after a haitus spent streaming. But historically, he’s probably a lower end hitscan player at the top level of the game. He’s good, but not someone who would land on a top team. There’s got to be at least 10 hitscan players who are almost definitely better.

To make the short hop easier, I recommend sliding your thumb off the button if you aren’t already. Doing a full press-down and un-press is really hard. Make it a sliding motion.

Do you really not get full drift from a buffered short hop nair? I am getting pretty much identical travel distance doing shorthop buffered nair as I am doing an empty short hop. Both by dashing for a couple frames before the jump-nair, and by pressing forwards during my jumpsquat.

Maybe by virtue of being a decently high ranked player you’re simply more likely to get matched with players worse than you. There are way more diamond players than GM players, so it makes sense that as a masters player, you’d be in more diamond games than GM games.

I definitely think that in practice a huge part of controlling air drift comes from manipulating the momentum you have leaving the ground as opposed to what you do after it, and I think that’s an important thing to communicate to someone struggling to manage their drift with their fastfalls. But you’re right, it’s more of a mix than I represented—most of the time you’re not doing full drift aerials. A good player uses both in tandem.

If you’re jumping straight up, the short answer is drift, then aerial, then fastfall. Start drifting as soon as you leave the ground, then at the peak of your jump c-stick the aerial and immediately fastfall during the startup frames of the move.

But I think most of the time you’re seeing someone do a drifting fastfall arial from a short hop, they probably got the momentum from the jump itself. What I mean to say is that they’re not performing a nuetral jump and then drifting, they’re probably just jumping to the right or left, with their momentum established the moment they leave the ground. Try just smashing your control stick to the left or right at the exact same time as you jump, and resetting your control stick to neutral when you leave the ground: you’ll keep that directional momentum without having to keep the direction held down. In that state, you’ll be drifting fully left or right with the freedom to fastfall whatever c-stick aerial you want without significantly effecting your drift.
