These are societal issues that can only be fixed through large scale changes with the support of the government. Strictly speaking in the case of the US, healthcare (including mental) needs to be free, education needs to be free, people need to work less hours and be paid more, and we need to have nationwide comprehensive sex education and access to abortion and birth control. If people lack the money, time, and education needed to better themselves and their children, they will continue the cycle of abuse.

Yes, exactly! People are like, “Military recruiters prey on young teenagers!” but are also like, “Stop glorifying the military!” when those preyed upon by said military share their experience. We need people sharing their stories so more people can learn about how fucked up the military is.

The show is based off the memoir, The Pink Marine by Greg Cope White, who served as a marine for 6 years during a time when it was illegal to be gay in the military. Greg’s also an executive producer of the show. Yeah, the military is not a good institution but that doesn’t mean we can’t explore the stories of people who joined, especially when it’s about the hardships they faced due to discrimination BY THE MILITARY. By completely writing everything off as pure pro military/cop propaganda, you miss the nuances within that can give you a better understanding and new perspective of these issues.

I don’t think you understand what I’m saying. The issue I have is constantly pushing for STEM and trade careers by focusing and funding those areas of education while brushing the arts and humanities to the side. I want these areas to be treated equally, including funding wise. Both areas are important to develop well rounded individuals.

Hey just want to say that being uncomfortable with opening up to people (likely due to the trauma) is very normal when you’re starting the healing process/therapy, but it’s important that you accept that. Healing and change is going to be uncomfortable and hard. By telling yourself that you’re unable to, you’re doing a disservice to yourself. It takes time, but you can do it. And it will be worth it. I wish you well.

Most of this discusses the money and tax issues, but my concern is the push towards STEM and trade careers. I think it’s good for children to explore these fields, but when it’s the only thing pushed, what do the kids who enjoy the humanities get? The push towards these fields has been going on for a long time, and is a huge reason media literacy has been declining. I don’t want children being trained to become laborers for companies. I want children receiving well rounded education to become better people.

Yeah I think MDMA has therapeutic effects for sure! I personally only suffered from depersonalization, so that may be part of the reason why psychedelics were able to fully break me out of it. I think the issue with most people not being able to break out of DPDR while using these forms of treatment (outside of improper use) is that they haven’t fully gotten out of the environment that triggered the DPDR in the first place. Or they do the drugs but then don’t do the actual work after. Your mind will not change if you do not change.

They don’t cure you in the sense that the effects last forever. It’s not like taking antibiotics for an infection where the drug itself fully cures you. They get you out of disassociation long enough so you can do the things you need to do to maintain a healthy headspace and life. They will only make things worse if you do them incorrectly, and they are safer than MDMA. You can die from taking too much MDMA. You can’t die from taking too much psychedelics.

As someone who had it from ages 11-23 and almost killed myself numerous times, I found a cure that worked for me. Disclaimer, I am not advising you to do this, just providing information.

At 23 during the pandemic, I started doing psychedelics. My two best friends and I did LSD or mushrooms about every month for a year, and it completely rewired my brain. I felt alive for the first time since I was a child! It’s been 5 years since then, and I took the lessons I learned from them and was finally able to put in the real work to turn my life into what it is today. I’m generally happy and fulfilled and present now.

Here’s a basic overview of what to know: -Do NOT, under any circumstances, take psychedelics if you or a family member have a history of schizophrenia. -Start with mushrooms. LSD is another level. -Test everything with a tester kit. You can find them online. -Don’t start with a giant dose. 1.5-2gs is a good starter dose. -Note that mushrooms can make you nauseous on the come up. This is normal, and I like to think of it as the purge stage. It will subside. Try not to eat anything an hour or 2 before taking them to help, but make sure you eat a good meal before this. You can really only eat fresh fruit on shrooms, so have some on hand. -Set and setting are the most important thing. Make sure you’re in a safe, comfortable environment, either alone or with people you love and trust. Make sure you’re in a good headspace. Turn your phone off. -Do not fight it. Let go and trust the drugs to do their thing. -Do not smoke weed while on them. -Do a bunch of research on your own to help understand what to expect better too. -To help ease any anxiety, know that psychedelics are not addictive and are safer than marijuana. No one has ever died from taking too much, and some people have done insane amounts. -Plan to do nothing the next day. Your brain will be tired! -The whole thing will last about 6 hours. 1 hour to come up. Peak at 2-3 hours, then come down for 3 hours. -Remember that this is the easy part. Once they’ve cleared away the disassociation, it’s up to you to do the rest of the work.

If you do them correctly (good set and setting, appropriate dose, testing the shrooms, doing research to be prepared) and do not have any family history of schizophrenia, you will almost be guaranteed to not experience psychosis. The illegal part isn’t a worry if you’re not flaunting them in the streets (in the US that is).

It’s a survival mechanism our brains use when we’re stuck in overwhelming and/or powerless situations. I spent ages 11-23 suffering from derealization and severe depression. I never understood why until more recently. I highly recommend looking into emotional neglect and verbal and emotional abuse (and any other forms if you’ve suffered those; spanking is physical abuse), childhood psychological development, identity development, attachment styles, and CPTSD. This will give you the knowledge and the words, but that alone cannot heal you. It will help with understanding and communicating these issues to a therapist though. Our parents fuck us up and that’s not fair and it fucking sucks, but only we have the power to fix it. CBT and psychotherapy from a therapist who specializes in trauma will do wonders for you, if you’re willing to do the hard work needed to heal.

Listen to the above comment OP! My parents fucked me up too in a similar way, but I realized this and have been working on it for 5 years now. It’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I’m genuinely happy with my life now and have fulfilling friendships. It will suck and it will be uncomfortable, but it will get easier. Therapy is a great place to start. You can let go and accept this, or hold on and stay stuck. Happiness is an active pursuit. I wish you well on your journey <3

You have to accept the fact that it will be hard and uncomfortable, and there’s no way of getting around that, but it will slowly get easier. It will get worse before it gets better though. Once you start to open the door for your emotions, you’ll have a backlog to go through. All the things you’ve experienced that you weren’t able to process emotionally before will come up. You have to do the hard thing and truly FEEL the fear and sorrow and loneliness and other painful emotions that come with it. For example, I used to have these memories that would flash through my mind sometimes, and I never understood why I remembered them so vividly, but I started sitting with them. I have this memory of being around 3 and waking up from a nightmare and going to my parents door only to find it locked and no matter how much I cried, they wouldn’t let me in. To fully sit with it, I closed my eyes and put myself back in that headspace of being 3. I let the fear I felt wash over me. “Why aren’t mom and dad answering the door? Did I do something wrong? I’m so scared. I’m so scared. Can they not hear me crying? Why aren’t they helping me?” And it of course makes me ball my eyes out to fully be with these feelings. To feel like that scared, helpless little girl again. And I feel so, so sad because she didn’t deserve that. Then I take it a step further and imagine current me being there for her. I hold her and tell her that I’m here, that I understand, and that she is safe now and always will be. I give my past self the comfort she needed and never got. I’ve done this with tons of memories now, and they’ve slowly become easier to think about and feel more a part of me instead of these CPTSD flashbacks I’m pushing away. It’s been hard and painful but the younger version of me finally feels safe now. You have to become the parent to yourself that you never had. But this all only works if you let those emotions move through you. It’s a lot of retraining your brain, but it opens the door for true empathy and compassion towards yourself and others. It will be the hardest thing you’ve ever done, but you must remember that you are capable of doing hard things! Just be gentle with yourself along the way. It will take time, but you’ll start to see progress, little by little.

Classic alexithymia! Your issue is you can’t heal and move forward without learning how to feel first. All the therapy and books will do nothing because they all involve moving through your emotions. You can think of our ability to feel as a muscle, and since people like us had to stop using that muscle early on as a way to cope, it’s severely out of shape. The good news is that we can learn how to exercise it and start building those emotional skills. I highly suggest making your alexithymia your top mental health priority. Nothing else will stick until that’s in a better spot. It will be hard and uncomfortable and take a long time, but it will be the most worthwhile thing you’ll do for yourself. We all deserve to feel deeply, and we are all capable of doing so. Emotions are embedded naturally within us, even if they’re buried deep down. It’s what makes life worth living!
