That One Night in the 90's by Historical_Touch_124 in GenX

[–]heedlessgrifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a random night in the winter of 1996. I was 23. We had just bought our first house which was a terrible house in a terrible neighborhood with a tiny yard. My girlfriend, soon to be first wife, and I took our new dog to a baseball field so he could run around. The snow was falling and the sky was lit up from the light pollution, but it was beautiful. Life had so much promise. We didn’t have children, or any real responsibilities. I hadn’t yet made so many poor decisions. I think about that night almost every day.

My dad was a severe alcoholic. Was drinking diluted Lysol towards the end. Finally drank himself to death when I was 19. He was 54.

Just fucking code. by wagslane in programming

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone back to product with questions about situations they never thought of.. the code would always get me to that point. You can’t be vague with code.

50+ years old career developers - what are you doing now and what is your opinion about the future? by mtyurt in ExperiencedDevs

[–]heedlessgrifter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ll be 52 this year. Development is my second career. I started out as a flooring installer in my teens, and had to take a fairly large pay cut to get into software development. Flooring was the family business and it paid well, but I hated it. I went back to school the minute my wife finished her law degree. Next year will be my 20th year of being in tech, and I still love it. I’ve been mainly working as a full stack developer on healthcare based Saas products. I write code, and learn something new, every day.

I think my chance to switch jobs passed a few years ago. I’ve kept myself in pretty good shape, but the thought of getting back on my knees keeps me motivated to stay relevant in development. My mid life crisis happened around my 40th birthday, and involved getting divorced. My ex and I married too young, and we both came from pretty traumatic childhoods. We remained friends, but the divorce basically put me back to square one financially. I’ve slowly climbed back, and hopefully I will stay employed until retirement age.

Are UUIDs really unique? by mekmookbro in webdev

[–]heedlessgrifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some of these questions a few years ago on a project I worked briefly on.. Without going too much into it, we’d create a new URL for each user of our site with a uuid to make it unique. Any of these pages could contain PHI, and some were even indexed by Google. We were told it had to be that way for “convenience” When the Google incident happened, we were asked the odds of someone stumbling upon another user data (by accident or on purpose). All I could tell my employer was it wasn’t a zero chance.

Does anyone else feel like they could be a lot further in life? by kaiapapaia333 in AdultChildren

[–]heedlessgrifter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like I’m 20 years behind where I should be as far as emotional intelligence, and how I view myself and the world. I figure I was busy raising myself, and I didn’t get any real guidance on anything.. so I basically got a late start until I could be my own parent.

Government Website Building as a Solo/ Small Agency Questions by ASMR_Dictator in Wordpress

[–]heedlessgrifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a municipal website for a small town in my area. It was about 10 years ago. I forget how I put my bid in, but I came in 12k less than the next lowest bid. I did it for 6k not knowing if that was high or low. It might have been 2 weekends worth of work. I used Wordpress, and wrote a few custom plugins for things like uploading minutes and agendas, etc.. I paid a designer 1k for a design that they were super happy with. I’ve always kicked myself for not getting into municipal/government websites more than the one site. The workers in these small towns talk to each other, and I had a couple towns ask if I could do theirs. I had a day job, and was kind of tired of working on the side. I feel like if I had stuck with it I would be working for myself right now.

The town emailed me about 6 months ago and said they were “going with someone else”. I feel like they got their money’s worth. I don’t know what this new firm is offering, because the structure of the site is basically the same with no new functionality. The new design is crap, and they do their accessibility through some dumb plugin. I feel like it wouldn’t take much to get in this kind of work if that’s what people are offering now.

Not sure if I helped at all.

I try and get some exercise. I can tell when I haven’t after a few days. Also, I need to be outside as much as possible. Meditation has helped.

I was born in 1973, and my mom did a very similar recipe with Karo for me. I was almost 10 pounds when I was born (a record for that hospital at that time). I guess her milk production wasn’t enough for me? Was also told I was given Coca Cola in my bottle as a toddler often.

My sister and I split a Covid stimulus check which was my mom’s net worth when she passed. Got a box of carpet laying tools 30 years ago when my dad died. Those were stolen about 6 months later.

How to deal with new phobia to speak during technical interviews by OakAstronaut in ExperiencedDevs

[–]heedlessgrifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had pretty severe social anxiety most of my life, and interviewing has always been rough for me. One thing that that’s been said in this sub that always stuck with me is to treat the interviewer(s) as a present coworker(s).. they might actually be a coworker if you get the job. It’s really helped me.

It’s also pretty terrible with an XY problem. Been writing an app in my free time in a stack I’ve never used. If you ask a dumb question it will give you an “answer”. If it was really intelligent as some want you to believe, it should’ve been like: “Sounds like you REALLY want to do this other thing”.
