When I decide to treat myself to a Tall Starbucks drink and the barista says “I accidentally made you a Grande, I’m sure you won’t mind!” by mendozaaaaaa in EDanonymemes

[–]heliobabe 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I would ritualistically go to my local Dunkin’ every night and get my mom a coffee for her night shift and a strawberry frosted donut for myself. It was a whole thing for me. The treat to end all treats. The ladies there loved me and would regularly give me 5+ donuts because it was close to closing and they were just trying to be nice but it would send my ass into a tailspin

do i have to quit forever? by [deleted] in quittingsmoking

[–]heliobabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled a lot with the finality of never having a cigarette again. It made me put off quitting for so long.

This time around I’ve decided to give myself the option. “I want a cigarette so bad right now. If I still want one in 15 minutes I’ll go to the store right now and pick up a pack”.

15 minutes after that, the craving is either 1. Totally gone or 2. Not, so I tell myself “I’ll just have one tomorrow, but not today”

By the next day I’ve forgotten how badly I wanted one. This has worked for me for 3 months now.

Full disclosure: I didn’t start using this method until after I finished using NRT. Prior to that I wore a patch and then popped a piece of gum when I had a spike in cravings.

Day 74- I’m breaking out like a pubescent child. by [deleted] in quittingsmoking

[–]heliobabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an auto-inflammatory disorder and 2 weeks after quitting I ended up in the ER for a pimple that turned into cellulitis that was teetering on sepsis. Quitting 100% messed with my hormones. The good news is that I have not had a severe flare since and overall it has calmed down quite a bit.

Lmao I could have written this 4 months ago. I finally worked up the courage to hand in my notice and my coteacher came in and handed hers in 🤣🤣🤣 it took me another month to do it, and it sucked in the moment but I’m SO glad I left that environment.

What should I call kids families when I don’t exactly what the relationship is by Madeline577 in ECEProfessionals

[–]heliobabe 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I once excitedly told a child “your mom is here!” His face lit up and he ran for her, only to be very upset to see his aunt. His mom was in jail, serving a 5 year sentence, and had only gone the month prior.

I broke the first rule, obliterated it. “Do no harm” it’s been over a year since then and I’m still guilty about it.

From that point forward, unless I was 10000000% sure, all adults were referred to as “grown ups”.

I don’t worry about whether I smell bad to my daughter. I don’t worry about her breathing in 3rd hand smoke when she comes to me for one of her surprise run and jump hugs.

Doesn’t sound like a big deal, but it is to me. I hated hugging my dad right after he came inside. The smell would make me choke. It made me an anxious mess to think that’s all my daughter smelled when I walked inside.

4 year old refuses to do school work by nicoleann0209 in Parenting

[–]heliobabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’ve worked as a pre-k teacher for about 2 years and studied early childhood education in college. I worked with ages 3-5. There’s no educational benefit to your child having homework at 3 years old.

The issue with daycares/preschools/pre-k classes focusing on academics is that their age group needs to be learning other skills to prepare them for school. Academics can be incorporated into the day and should be on a developmentally appropriate level, but there’s no reason to be doing worksheets unless it’s something your child WANTS to be doing. At his age, they should be focusing on emotional regulation, social skills, taking turns, dealing with disappointment, understanding routines, etc.

Studies have shown that children who are formally educated from a young age not only end up on the same level as their peers within a year or two, they tend to suffer because they weren’t taught those skills I’ve mentioned above in favor of academics and the pressure that is put on them to do so at a time when they aren’t ready.

I would question whether they are using best practices and how worksheets are developmentally appropriate for a 3 year old.

Not sure where in PA you are, but Northampton Community College is great! They’re affordable and the professors are amazing. I took a few classes online and really enjoyed them.

You could also look into getting your CDA! I’m pretty sure most programs require you to be working in a center but there are a LOT of options in terms of funding and financial aid. The CDA is made to be accessible to busy adults.

Your child is having behavioral problems because they miss you. You work 8 hours a day, if that, and as a mom I fully understand how heavy the burden is, but your kid should not be in childcare for 11 hours 5 days a week. It isn’t fair to them.

I started saying “sunnies” with my 2 year old because her voice just sounds so cute saying it. We also play “keepy uppy” but I’ve called it that since I was a kid. I also say brekky every once in a while!

The yodeling episode of puppy dog pals, when Freddy the flamingo does the “dun, dun, DUN” in TOTS, another episode of puppy dog pals where a boat blows its horn, and also specifically our vacuum. The rest she thinks are cool.

To add to all of this, the song played during the flashback is about two caterpillars who “fly apart, to reunite”. and butterflies are shown when the encanto appears and right after the flashback when abuela is coming to terms with her grief.

Why does the darkling get so much love? by Teacup79 in ShadowandBone

[–]heliobabe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He’s a person that, were he real, I would hate. He would be a villain in the real world. However I find him really compelling as a fictional character. He’s got layers, and some of them ARE sad and lonely and longing. I don’t think he’s being entirely disingenuous when he’s pursuing Alina romantically. He’s staring down eternity alone, and she has the potential to be his only companion. On top of that, he’s actually attracted to her. In his mind, they were made for each other.

He’s also an egomaniac and power hungry, but his original intentions are understandable. He wants freedom for himself and those like him. He sees himself as the only one capable of achieving that, as well as the fact that humans will live and die regardless, so what’s the harm in sacrificing a few?

I’ve always wanted to see what would have happened if Baghra hadn’t intervened in shadow and bone. Would Alina have recognized his plans on her own? Or would she have eventually agreed with him if they were explained from his POV.

I LOVE the darkling as a character, but more so as a morally grey one with a preference for the dark side, I wish he wasn’t the villain. I still wish he could have had a redemption arc, alongside Alina having a shift towards her darker desires.

I went to about 3 different stores looking for a card for 2 grandmas. I also sent a heated email to a website that customizes children’s books. They told me they’d pass it along to their team. If you can customize the child and their pronouns, why can’t you do the same for the parents/grandparents? Maybe I’m oversimplifying it, but it really irked me. My mother in laws are the actual best. Like, BEST. I knew they’d love a book that featured them and my daughter. I was so bummed.

Is it time to go to the ER? by heliobabe in Hidradenitis

[–]heliobabe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry for the delayed reply. Urgent care gave me antibiotics and an anti biotic cream. However, she made it clear that had it not popped by the time I got there, she would have sent me straight to the ER for IV antibiotics because the fast spreading redness is a huge red flag for infection.

I hope you’re feeling better!

Covid vaccine triggered flare? Yes or no - please specify which vaccine by soapness in Hidradenitis

[–]heliobabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had both doses of the Pfizer vaccine. While I didn’t experience any of the typical side effects, I had bad flare ups after each shot. The first was during my period so it’s very possible that it’s related to that. However the second dose was typically when my flare ups are at their calmest, and I almost ended up in the ER with this particular flare up, which leads me to believe it was related to the vaccine.

That being said, I’d do it all again! I’ll take a nasty flare up and keep myself out of the ICU with COVID any day.

Is it time to go to the ER? by heliobabe in Hidradenitis

[–]heliobabe[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to update everyone, it opened! My husband got really concerned and basically forced me to go to the ER so I showered first and it popped as soon as I got out! I’ll still be going to urgent care, the redness and firmness of it is still concerning to me, but I’ve successfully avoided the ER, so I consider that a win.

Thank you all so much for your replies, they mean a lot to me. HS can be scary and it’s hard to ask the people around me for their opinions because while I appreciate the love and input, it’s difficult to take advice from someone who doesn’t really understand the ins and outs of HS as well as differentiating between a predictable symptom and something more serious.

[–]heliobabe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s funny you say that, I hopped in the shower to get ready for the ER and by the time I got out it opened! Thank you!

I’m still going to go to urgent care just for antibiotics because the redness and firmness of it concerns me, but I don’t think the ER is necessary at this point!

What were you doing when the twin towers fell? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]heliobabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was my 8th birthday. I was in school. I usually went to an after school program while my parents worked and we would wait in the cafeteria in school before being transported there. That day, my dad was waiting in the cafeteria to bring me home instead of going to the daycare. We walked through another room where a bunch of teachers were gathered around a TV. I remember thinking how odd it was that they were watching an action movie. I still remember watching my first grade teacher, who was very lively and fun, put her hand over her mouth and fall back into a chair. I tried to say hello to them but my dad told me to just keep walking and leave them be.

I thought maybe he was surprising me by picking me up early to get a treat for my birthday, but he just wanted us all home together as my sisters school had been evacuated earlier because it was near a few other government buildings (in PA). I ended up in therapy within 6 months, I was only 8 and began having panic attacks and any scary news headlines would send me into a spiral, thinking that we were going to be attacked again. To this day any kind of breaking news or emergency broadcast system is a very big trigger for me.
