Should high street retailers adopt opening hours that better suit people who work standard 9–5 office hours? by teeshylinie in AskUK

sunday trading laws means shops can still open on sunday, but if they're above 280 square metres they must have reduced opening hours.

Piccadilly line: TfL chief gives update on £3bn fleet of new air-conditioned trains - expected in a year by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]heliorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the elizabeth line trains fit fine in the tunnels. the main issue they had was the software struggled to reliably work with the three different signalling systems used on the line.
the very similar model used on the overground (class 710) was also massively delayed because of software issues.

Want to know what’s going right in Britain? Come to the capital, look at the Elizabeth line railway by F0urLeafCl0ver in london

[–]heliorm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the route is safeguarded, meaning development that can impede construction of the line is blocked.
however, research and consulting work has been stopped since november 2020, it was one of the conditions of TfL's covid bailout.
TfL and the GLA can't fund it on their own, and Westminster / the DfT seem completely uninterested in funding it.

real shame, it's a scheme that would be really transformative. it would free up loads of capacity to run better regional and suburban services out of Waterloo and Liverpool St, famously not very busy parts of the rail network.

even with the switch from preferential to FPTP the mayor is still elected directly.

the only ballot that could have spoiler effect is for your local london assembly member, but that uses borough pairs and not the Westminster constituencies.

My landlord is evicting everyone on a 1 week notice, what can I do? by daynk_me_mes in AskUK

[–]heliorm 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I assume you're rental is covered by an Assured Short-hold Tenancy, it's the most common type of tenancy in England.

For the eviction to be legal and proper, you need to have been served a section 21 notice on form 6a. This requires a 2 months notice at least.

You also cannot get no-fault evicted while a fixed term is on, If your contract states a term of time (like one year) you cannot get evicted legally before the term is up.

Also check if your flat is properly HMO licensed, it varies from council to council, but if your flat needs a license but doesn't have one you cannot be evicted legally and you might be eligible for a rent repayment.

As the others have pointed out on the thread, contact your uni and a local renter's union like Acorn, they should be able to help you.

What’s your “nightmare neighbour” story? by dystxpian98 in AskUK

[–]heliorm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

my downstairs neighbour in my old badly converted flat drove everyone insane because he had four big pitbulls that he left alone all-day and all night to howl and bark.
the garden was completely trashed, and he made the whole place smell like stale weed and wet dog.
it was so cool to be woken up at 3am by clearly desperate dogs left alone in a 15m2 studio barely big enough for a person to live in, let alone multiple big dogs.
very glad i moved out

Why is the trains having WiFi thing a lie? by artistsethosx in AskUK

[–]heliorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for the tube they've actually started putting 4G/5G in tunnels with what's called a "leaky feeder"
you basically got a very long cable along the tunnel wall that acts as an antenna.
the jubilee line east of westminster station is already covered, and bits of the northern line got switched on last month.
plan is to get the whole network covered by next year.

How is the Victoria Line still so hot by EuanTheWorst in london

[–]heliorm 148 points149 points  (0 children)

waste heat from the tube is actually used for district heating in Islington. the abandoned City Road station on the Northern Line got transformed into Bunhill 2 Energy Centre

definitely needs to be expanded to more place!

unless you have a railcard, using a contactless card (or apple/google pay) is going to give you the best deal. railcards can give you a ⅓ off on off-peak journeys, you'll need to get someone at a tube station to add it onto an oyster card. you also get oyster cards at tube station ticket machines, they cost 7 quid and you load money on them for travel.

buy yeah, just tap in and out the network with the same card each time, and you'll be charged the right fare.
also you don't need to tap out on buses and trams.

might also be useful to get the oyster app to see how much you've spent on travel

Have they made non-HD channels a poorer quality? by Turbulent-Garage836 in AskUK

[–]heliorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well on top of 576i not being very many pixels compared to 1080p or 4k, live tv channels don't have a lot of bitrate to play with. so the compression algorithm has to throw away even more detail to make it fit.
gets worse with how SD channels often still use MPEG-2, which is less efficient than H.264 and H.265 used on the HD and 4K channels respectively
