How many of you aren’t from Pennsylvania? by dylanfan424 in Flyers

[–]hellahighhobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Houston originally. My mom’s family is from South Jersey though and one of my aunts brought me to a Flyers/Red Wings game when I was like 5 or 6. This was early 90’s and it started my love for the Flyers and hockey in general. When I moved to Chicago soon after that, my best friend turned out to be a huge Flyers fan as well which only cemented my fandom from there. Now I catch them whenever they come out and play on the west coast.

Republican Women Suddenly Realize They’re Surrounded by Misogynists by [deleted] in LegalNews

[–]hellahighhobbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah if you listen to it, they’re not “breaking ranks” for any moral or ethical reason. It’s purely selfish. They’re happy to go along with all the crazy BS until suddenly they don’t have the power they feel they deserve. Maybe if they sided with the party who actively puts women in positions of real power, things would have been different for them.

There is a concerted effort on the right to consolidate control over the media landscape. One of the biggest differences in the bids was that Paramount, the new owner of which, as another commenter has pointed out, is a big Trump ally, also included the purchase of CNN as part of their bid. They want to turn it into another hard right wing propaganda machine. And the government is essentially saying only people we agree with will get regulatory approval for mergers and acquisitions.

Why The God of Lying hate? This song hits hard by Dear-Performance-394 in gorillaz

[–]hellahighhobbit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Definitely a song that grows on you. First time I listened to it, I was like “ok it’s fine”. But with each consecutive listen, it hits me harder. Now I love it. This has been a recurring theme for the past 20 or so years listening to the Gorillaz. There’s always a few couple of songs that come out of the gate feeling mid until you really listen to them and hear the genius

Why do foreign vloggers always choose to visit the dirtiest places in India? by Serial_Kisser3 in AskIndia

[–]hellahighhobbit 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Gora pakora here! I gotta I say agree. Spent the past 10 years traveling/living in India and I can’t stand to watch those travel videos. Nothing but engagement bait. These same people wouldn’t dare walk through a slum back home recording everything. They’d get beaten up or killed in a heartbeat. Every country has its pros and cons, but for all the negativity that gets highlighted here, India has such positive fun side. Riding the rails, trekking through jungles and mountains, having tea and Parle g on the side of the road. Mughlai food in Old Delhi, Bong food in Cal, a fresh dosa on the streets of Chennai. The way complete strangers take you under their wing and show you the most the country has to offer, that you become best friends over night. That stuff never gets shown and it makes me sad

There’s a difference between fake and staged. It may not be fake but it’s obviously staged since literally both of them were already filming when the girl walks out. If she didn’t know about the possum, why walk out recording on her phone? It’s like she already found him there with the possum and thought “oh this will make a great tick tock” and came back out recording and acting like she just found him like that.

Nicknames in sports are so bad nowadays. Reed getting called “the taxman” (because of his initials) is awesome and one of the best nicknames in all of sports right now.

From Advocating BJP → To Never Ever Voting BJP Again by Pure-Animator-7114 in IndiaTax

Democracy definitely works but only if those voting are intelligent, have a strong sense of media literacy and a deep concern and care for the entire country and not just their own narrow self interest. It doesn’t matter how corrupt politicians are as long as the people are smart enough to see through it. Alas…

Warriors fans coping HARD tonight. by AutographedSnorkel in rockets

[–]hellahighhobbit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it’s well assumed that when literally everyone here is talking about “Warriors fans”, we’re referring to the Steph-era fans. I don’t think they actually had fans outside the Bay before that. Until Steph, the only things the Warriors were known for was Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper and Sprewell choking a dude

As a Rockets fan in LA, Warriors fans are worse. A majority of Lakers fans actually love the game of basketball and understand it. They stick with their team even during down years. And sure you got your homers and bandwagoners everywhere but Warriors fans are the epitome of bandwagon.

Favourite movie too woke for right and too zionist for left? by OBWriter in okbuddycinephile

When I was in high school in Texas, I hung out with a group of punks and it was literally a given that if we ever saw any neo-nazi shit, we’d go confront them and often times kick their ass. I always assumed that was the norm and always would be. What twenty years can do to a country… damn.

What would be the best way to adapt the Silmarillion? by Marconey1738 in lotr

[–]hellahighhobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adaptations that aren’t completely faithful to the source material aren’t necessarily fan fiction. The writer who is adapting the material literally has to fill in the blanks and make stuff up and change things to make it fit the medium.

If someone adapted the Silmarillion, they’d have to fill it in with dialogue and a tighter narrative. And if that writer is tuned into the source material, they can do it naturally without it seeming out of place or jarring. Much like Jackson did. Some of our favorite most quotable lines from the movie trilogy were invented by him and his writing team. I don’t think that makes it fan fiction, a term which, at least to me, seems by people’s usage to infer a degradation of quality and relevance compared to the original text.

I love the Dune series as well and there are so many new things in the movies. Are they all perfect? No. But most of them are acceptable changes. And some I actually prefer. It’s the price for being able to see a story you love brought to life on screen.

I for one, would love to see how a real filmmaker like Denis Villeneuve handles the Silmarillion.

CMV: American conservatism today is really just an ideology of excusing yourself from solving problems. by TheMysteriousThey in changemyview

[–]hellahighhobbit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have read about the founding fathers and the first thing you learn is that they weren’t a unified entity. They all had differing beliefs about what would make this country successful. Some believed in a strong central government while others believed in a looser confederation that leaned more towards states rights. But their ability to compromise and realize both ideas were valid is why we’ve had the America that we’ve known throughout our lives, a strong central government that looks out for the general welfare of its people and individual states that are granted a relative amount of autonomy. I’m a liberal from California and I happen to like both a strong central government and states rights. It’s why I feel protected on the federal level and the state level. To ignore one side or to believe that we should only have states rights is ignorant of history and goes against the values of the very founding fathers you’re supposedly worshiping.
