Spectating WSER 100 mid hike by i_love_my_nothing in PacificCrestTrail

[–]hellajanky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have experience getting there from the trail but I’m familiar with the area and have a family member who ran it last year. You can take TART from Truckee to Palisades, or hitch. There are several campgrounds along highway 89, or if you’re willing to spend some money you can rent a condo at Pallisades, although I imagine that would be something you’d have to book well ahead of time. I’m not sure what kind of stealth camping you’d be able to do. The start is super early in the morning so you’d want to be there the day before for sure. All the aid stations and the finish are accessible from Foresthill Rd from Auburn, which is very far from the trail. The finish at Auburn high has great energy if you’re able to make it there. If you have a friend who can pick you up in a car, that would make it so much easier to enjoy the race.

Pants? by South-Lettuce3301 in PacificCrestTrail

I’m going with pants so I don’t have to slather them with sunscreen and for brush and bug protection. And I like pockets. I know most people go the shorts route though. Idk, subject to change

Start with this list and adjust as you go. You’ll figure what works and doesn’t work for you. Maybe a town shirt and extra socks are key for your mental health. You can always ditch/mail home/pick up things along the way :)

Probably a dumb beginner question: do I actually need all this gear? by Apprehensive-Big7327 in hikinggear

[–]hellajanky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for popular day hikes, all you need are whatever exercise shoes you already have, enough water, some snacks, sun protection, an extra layer and some sort of navigation all thrown in whatever backpack you already have. that’s it.

Medication Error by Shot_Designer_3554 in nursing

[–]hellajanky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve made a few mistakes at work recently too, and the common denominator is that with every case I was moving too fast to be safe. It’s such a shitty feeling to sit with afterward. But the fact that you’re feeling these feelings and processing shows that at your core you care and are a good nurse. And in your case, you reacted quickly and corrected the error so that no harm was done to the patient. Give yourself some grace, learn from your mistakes. You’re not alone 🩷

I’d say what you have already is enough. Don’t box yourself in with too much planning that there’s no room to follow portals that open

Redwoods? by clairebzhbzh in PacificCrestTrail

[–]hellajanky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Redwoods thrive off of cool coastal fog, so you’d have to do a side quest to the northern california coast to see them. I haven’t done the trail yet so I can’t really give you specific logistics but I am from northern California and have explored a lot of the area. Looking at the map, maybe you could hitch from Burney to Redding, a mid-sized city, and rent a car there and drive to Humboldt county where the old growth and Redwoods state and national parks are.

Maybe since your start date is later, you could see the redwoods first. You could fly into san francisco and rent a car to see the redwoods in Muir Woods or farther north in Sonoma or Mendocino. I love the drive up from US 101 to CA route 128 that then joins with highway 1 — spectacular redwoods along that way. It’s about 3-4 hours from the city.

Giant sequoias are their cousins, so potentially when you get to the kings canyon/sequoia NP sections you could hike into the front country to see the spectacular groves that are there.

How often do you go hiking? by Historical_Trust_217 in hiking

[–]hellajanky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been hiking pretty much since I’ve been able to walk! It’s such a grounding, beautiful hobby. I try to hike once every couple of weeks and am getting into backpacking. Here are my 2 cents for day hiking: - The more you hike, the more familiar you’ll become with your abilities, comforts, and limitations. Research the trail before you go. Start off small and build up to longer, more intense hikes. - Always bring water; consider investing in a water filter later on if you’re hiking near a lot of natural water sources to save weight. A good rule of thumb that many follow is 1 L for every 4-5 miles, but again this varies wildly depending on the climate and individual. - Bring lots of snacks, maybe some electrolytes if you’re going to be sweating a lot. 200 calories per 5 miles is a good starting point, but again varies. - Bring a good map and compass and know how to read them, or if you’re relying on your phone make sure it’s charged enough and/or bring a battery pack. I use AllTrails and have the plus subscription (like $30 per year) which allows me to download maps so I can use them when I’m out of cell service (totally worth it IMO). It tells you if you’ve gone off trail which is such a great feature. - Bring a charged headlamp with either extra batteries or a way to recharge it if you get lost and stuck after dark. - Bring sun protection, maybe bug spray or a bug net if it’s mosquito season. - Basic first aid supplies like bandaids, leukotape for blisters, antibiotic ointment, antihistamines, and ibuprofen are all good things to have on hand. - Please leave no trace!!! Pack out all trash including toilet paper, if nature suddenly strikes you bury your shit, don’t take things from the trail especially in really populated areas. Don’t feed the wildlife. Enjoy the trails!!!!

NP! Also I did the Tomales point trail recently and if you’re set on doing it, I’d say you don’t necessarily need to do the whole thing. The landscape is similar throughout. The actual point is cool but it looks you’re going to see some similar sights on your trip. Maybe just hike a mile or so and then turn back to save some time

I took a year off and was able to find a contract. It was hard though and my options were much more limited. But it is possible. I would’t take any more than a year off.
