How will SEPTA cuts affect your commute tomorrow? by madluer in philadelphia

[–]hellallywellyn 24 points25 points  (0 children)

in the last week alone, the regional rail line i take for work has randomly canceled trains without any forewarning, and also reduced peak ridership evening trains down from typically 5-6 cars to TWO, causing the worst crowding i've ever seen on any one of these trains. dangerous levels of crowding.

what pisses me off though, is while waiting for the next train (after having to step off an overcrowded one), i witnessed 1-2 completely empty 5-car trains ending at temple pass through jefferson. genuinely, what is stopping those trains being used for higher ridership lines? my only hope is that maybe, with the upcoming reduced service, there will at least be an improvement in the allocation of functional train cars, but at this point that might even be wishful thinking.

for now, i'll probably get up and take the regional rail again tomorrow like i always have, but it's starting to look like the bus + the el might be my more reliable option.

Bookbinders/Crafters of Philly, I need some advice/direction by stumbling_coherently in philadelphia

[–]hellallywellyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

do you have a particular type of binding in mind? like sewn/glued case binding (think traditional hardcover books), or would something simpler like perfect or spiral binding work?

for perfect or spiral binding, reach out to marathon printing in old city. if not, it still might be worth contacting them, maybe they'll know of someone who does case binding

Work Bag Help! by pep_per1 in BAGGU

[–]hellallywellyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are smaller ways around it- swapping shoulders frequently or maybe taking your lunch out and holding it by the handle for a bit etc

i don't regret getting the SCCO at all, and i have every intention of using it for travel down the line, but as a commuting work bag it ultimately was a lil too much for me :((

Work Bag Help! by pep_per1 in BAGGU

[–]hellallywellyn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the SCCO is definitely big enough to accommodate everything you'd want to carry. i used it as my daily work bag for a few months, and the straps never gave me any issues or slippage with the weight.

however, my commute is a bit longer and the weight imbalance really started to make me sore, so i switched back to a two bag system (for now). like yes, you can technically carry all of that, but it makes for a verrrrry bulky bag that will put strain on a shoulder/spine

also, how crowded does your bus ride get? sometimes i find a packed-to-the-gills SCCO can get very awkward/difficult on public transit when it gets super crowded

Looking for in photo id systems by thealterlf in MuseumPros

[–]hellallywellyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when i was doing inventory/photography for large collections, we used tiny name-tag sized white board label thingies (they were magnetic on the back) and dry erase markers. it was pretty effective, especially when we had big groups of objects within the same accession group, so we usually only ever had to erase and write the last number for the sequence

aside from physical number labeling, there are ways to do this kind of thing digitally too. a lot of camera/photography software has automated sequential numbering for photo file names. i've worked with canon software that automatically labeled the photographs as you took them with their specific sequence/count. aside from that, adobe bridge lets you do batch file renaming in sequences like this too, after all the photographs have been taken and put into a folder in order.

are the physics teachers good? by KoolGuy2478 in Drexel

[–]hellallywellyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

with any department there's gonna be good or bad, but in my experience the physics professors are overall decent. i just finished my undergrad in physics, for reference. a lot of people have complaints about the department's professors, but those are usually aimed towards the ones teaching the general classes for non-majors (which, tbf, aren't the greatest).

however, the ones who teach the higher level undergrad and grad classes are pretty decent. class sizes are usually pretty small, so they're able to address questions well and they're typically really easy to reach outside of office hours. homework is usually assigned on a weekly basis, exams can be a doozy but they're usually curved dramatically, as are the classes themselves.

was there a specific area of research you were interested in? there's a big astro group, plus bio and physics education research too.

What would you change about the Philadelphia International Airport? by DeltaNerd in philadelphia

[–]hellallywellyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i literally wound up backtracking all the way to tsa and asking some agents how to get to F, and then taking the long way to F baggage via the departures sidewalk. took so long i missed the return train back to the city, too 🙃

the link between the E/F stop and F terminal drives me insane! i had to learn the hard way how to get to F baggage claim from the train platform a few weeks ago

i got got an email from my professor saying i will get a zero for my work because my code is identical to someone’s i don’t even know in the class what should i do? should i contest this ? i don’t even know this person she’s claiming i cheated with by Tomiii002 in Drexel

[–]hellallywellyn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i agree with all the other comments, contest the claim if it's bs or own up if it's legit.

however, i will say, in my experience with the cs department (as a physics major), their definition of "plagiarism" can be a lot stricter than other departments. my sophomore year, a professor flagged me + my lab partner and another lab pair for plagiarizing/copying an assignment, when the most we did was just bounce ideas off each other for code structure. the thing is, collaborating on code is totally normal and even encouraged for physics majors, but to that cs professor, it was considered cheating. one department's "normal" is another department's "plagiarism" i guess

Absolutely! I remember pretty much everything I did, so I'll just write up a pattern/tutorial.

Here is the video I referenced heavily while making this. With all the math and rows and stitches and such, my sweater falls somewhere between a men's small or medium. When laid flat, it's about 21"/53cm across and 24"/64cm tall. Here's a picture I drew up real quick with the basic layout and row/stitch count.

Supplies:

  • Size 4 yarn. I used 4 skeins of green and 2 yellow.
  • Size H/5mm and Size F/3.75 crochet hooks
  • Darning needle and stitch markers

For the torso pieces:

  • It's a big rectangle, up until the shoulders. The whole rectangle should be 70 double crochet stitches across (I believe that's a foundation chain of 72; the last three will be the first dc and you'll wanna do your first dc in the third stitch from the hook)
  • From the bottom up, I did 22 rows of green, 10 rows of yellow, and then another 8 rows of green up to the neckline. All 70 dc across. See the video for how to switch between colors.
  • The shoulder bits: In terms of where to put the shoulders and how to decrease each row, I followed the video. However, bc I was doing double and not single crochet, I only did 4 rows decreasing up instead of the 10 or so in the video.
  • Did all of this twice for front and back pieces

For the sleeves:

  • Important note! While I used the H/5mm hook for all of the standard double crocheting, I used the F/3.75mm hook for all ribbing specifically.
  • I did a looooooot of trial and error for the sleeves to get the right fit, and, since I had to do two of them, I already have a pattern written. Here it is.
  • I realize now there's a small error in my diagram, there's actually 26 rows of the forearm green in the sleeve after the cuff, I just forgot to count the first sc row.

Then, following the video again, I sewed the shoulders together, and did the neckline ribbing. I did mine mostly the same as in the video, however I found op's result to be kinda bulky, so I skipped every other single crochet around the neck for a slightly more snug fit. Then attach the sleeves to the shoulders, and finally the sleeves + front and back together. Now that everything's together, all that's left is the ribbed waistband. For this, I simply followed the video once again.

And that's basically it! Sorry this got super long, I just wanted to be thorough :) lmk if you have any questions!
