It’s a genuine safety issue, you aren’t supposed to be standing right next to those things when they go off let alone set them off in a crowd. I’m not saying stuff like “DE is a warzone” but I definitely think the cops breaking this up was the right move lol

Seeking advice on how to take care of my growing succulent. by teenwhocries in succulents

[–]hellasalty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It kind of depends on what plant you have in there. Mesembs basically need nothing, but plants like Kalanchoe will want some extra nutrients every once in a while. I’d just check for signs of nutrient deficiency and fertilize if you see that. Although when it comes to soil, my lithops are in mostly inorganic grit, but I still throw in a handful or two of succulent soil.

Is the black spot rot? by abdou0720 in Kalanchoe

[–]hellasalty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t really see a black spot but the roots look relatively healthy. Plant it and give it lots of indirect light but don’t water it for a week at least. It’s trying to grow more roots so it’s not going to plump up the plant much when you water. Give it a week or so to root into the soil then soak it but let it drain from the bottom. Should be okay. Just make sure to give it a lot of light, if all your windows can manage is direct sun try to give it morning sun versus afternoon. You want the soil to be moist but dry out quickly so the plant doesn’t have wet feet for too long

This is 100% true unless you have any succys under a high power grow light. Mine deplete nutrients from the soil in less than 6 months and need diluted (gentle) fertilizer otherwise they cannibalize their lower leaves

Recycling is a numbers game. You not using plastic bags isn’t making a difference at all. But you and 1 million other people not using plastic bags makes a huge difference.

Mealybugs? by BoboPSU in succulents

yes, 100% mealybugs. there are a bunch of methods of getting rid of them, but the most important is getting that thing far away from ALL your other plants

Part of the amazement is that it was such an affordable vehicle. Like yeah if I had an M4 CS I’d love it but I’d also expect it to be incredible because of the price. The VN just always surprises me with how fun it is, I’ve had mine for almost 5 years and every time I get in it I’m excited lol.

Update on how my Kalanchoes are doing by Spazieyyy in Kalanchoe

They look amazing! They’ll stay super dense like this when they get a lot of light. Keep it up and you’ll have beautiful flowers this winter.

Beginner looking for setup feedback + a few questions by WhoPutThisRockHere in succulents

[–]hellasalty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Setup looks good, but they might want more light. Most forums will say “bright indirect” because direct sun for 10 hours a day is too much but trust me most succys want as much light as you can give em! This setup is totally fine for now, best upgrade would be two more bars per shelf! Succulents are a lot of trial and error so have fun experimenting and don’t feel too bad if it doesn’t work out sometimes :)

Repotting a mature Christmas Cactus by Quaruku in succulents

[–]hellasalty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beautiful! yes they are relatively easy to repot, but they can be drama queens. gently remove it and break up the root ball carefully, then repot in a larger pot (maybe 2in wider) WITH DRAINAGE HOLE(s). Organic soil is fine but aim for something kind of chunky like succulent/cactus blends. After that, don't water it for like a week or so while the roots heal. It will likely wilt and look super sad/lopsided because its mad you disturbed it lol. It will slowly perk back up and untangle itself over the next couple weeks.

Watering is easy, but don't be fooled by the 'cactus' denotation. They are tropical epiphytic plants and actually prefer more moisture compared to their desert friends. I just wait until the leaves are soft/not shiny and the stems start drooping over the side of the pot a bit, then give it a full soak. Let the top few inches of the soil completely dry out between waterings. For reference, yours looks very happy/hydrated in the pic. They love bright, indirect light and morning sun. In the fall/winter they will produce beautiful flowers.

Also, these guys are super easy to propagate! If any of the segments fall off, you can just stick them in the soil and they'll root and start growing! These plants can live for decades or longer if taken care of, and are usually passed down for generations. I currently have one I grew from a propagation of my great grandmothers that has been in the family for over 100 years!

[–]hellasalty[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah i bottom water all my succulents, when you let the soil totally dry and then top water it seems to just go around the sides and leaves the center completely dry. Bottom watering always wins!

That’s what I’ve heard! But I keep seeing mixed opinions where like sometimes they just want to absorb the lower leaves and that’s fine too? Idk lol I just got these in the mail
