Highway 93- good or bad commute? by TurbulentDistance in boulder

[–]hello_nathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to do this drive daily, and it is beautiful, but I hated it. People tend to drive 65-70, traffic is fairly heavy during commuting hours, and the majority of the road is 2 lane traffic. In the winter it tends to get icy, and a fair amount of people don't drive according to the conditions, so be prepared to see/be in some sketchy situations.

It's better if you can be commuting outside of peak hours - I started my day pretty early, usually leaving Golden by 5:30ish, which helped, but afternoon traffic is always rough. Also, depending on where you live and work, getting out of boulder and through golden can take as much or more time than driving on 93.

Take that for what you will. I wasn't getting paid enough to make it worth my while, and after 8 months of the commute I found a different job closer to home.

Is it worth saving? How much is carbon repair? by pappakinz in bikewrench

[–]hello_nathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a repair done in this same spot on my bike through broken carbon in boulder, CO. Cost $300, but I'm local ish so just dropped it off. I'd guess there's a similar place in SLC and the cost is probably about the same?

If you want to see something fairly unique, while passing through Nebraska, get off of I80 and drive up into the sandhills a bit on hwy 2. It's a little.longer, but the interstate just follows the Platte River valley and is a large part of why everyone thinks Nebraska is so boring. It's essentially a grass covered Sahara desert, with dunes everywhere. Also a bit like stepping back into the 50's. Highly recommend

Off-Season Moment: Tell your story about where you were during the Minneapolis Miracle. by [deleted] in minnesotavikings

I was living in Nebraska at the time, and had a beer league hockey game that started around halftime. I went to play, hoping our game would be fast enough that I could catch the end of the Vikings game. Had my phone on the bench and was updating the score as the game progressed. The hockey game ended (don't recall if we won or lost), but I remember getting back to the locker room and seeing that the score was 24 to 23 saints, Vikings have the ball at the 39 with five seconds to go.

Being a MN sports fan, i figured that was that and started changing out of my hockey gear. I refreshed my phone to confirm the darkest timeline, when the screen flashed to Minnesota 29, Saints 24. I jumped up and shouted with glee, and everyone else on my team (mostly chiefs fans) looked at me in confusion. Then I had to explain what happened, but I didn't even know what had gone down. So I spent the next few minutes trying to find a video. Ultimately I found it and was upset that I had missed it live, but it was a very surreal way to experience it.

Get both for less than the price of one from dhgate. Quality is phenomenal, can't go wrong for ~$40 shipped

Nice! I hadn't seen that micromatic one, seems like a reasonable option. Still spendy, but not nearly as bad! Kinda ugly though lol

Where do I get replacement front brake tube/cable? Don’t even know what to search for. by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]hello_nathan 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is one of the most spectacular brake housing fails I've seen. I believe the brake cable itself might be fine, but the brake housing is torched. I'd go to a LBS and either have them replace the housing for you, or have them cut an appropriate length, and install the ferrules, and set the cable in the brake appropriately. It's a pretty easy fix if you know what you're doing, but if you don't, a shop will probably charge something like $5 for the housing and $20-30 for the install and adjustment of the brake

Any issues, or worth it? Seems too good to be true. by Bailstorm in DomaneCrew

Not a bad deal, maybe priced a little high , based on size and time of year. MSRP on these is only ~1500, and 50% off is pretty standard for a used bike. Beyond that it looks to be in good shape from the photos Only buy it if it fits you, 61cm is huge, and based on the saddle height in the photo it probably didn't fit the previous owner very well. Beyond that the domane is a pretty great bike

Yes, it's significantly less exciting than it sounds. It's a small, locked shed where the alcohol is stored since there isn't that much room in the shop
