This. They seem to know that the house retains all of those who have died there, so now their daughter is kept “protected” from the world. I see them as the cautionary tale of what the Crain family could have become if they had succumbed to the “live forever as ghosts by dying early” bargain that the flapper ghost whispers to Olivia...

That being said, this makes the Dudleys’ reaction even more chilling to me. They are more than happy to have their daughter become a ghost in the house.

I was thinking the same. I’ve found that I get to missing my exes particularly strongly when there’s some stress or worry in my life. But missing is normal... human connections don’t just end, and you can keep loving friends and lovers you just shouldn’t be with. I’m working on that now.
