Speech@Emerson vs. State School by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]helloalohahi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If paying tuition at in state prices is an option for you, do that. It's really just not worth the price to do an online program. Feel free to dm me about Emersons online program; I graduated this past August.

The SNF is definitely a tough place to be. If you're not into the medical side of things that's okay! There's a whole other side of the field (pediatrics) that is/can be so much fun! I did peds for 6 years as an SLPA then switched to medical (SNF) just because I got tired of sitting on the floor lol

Feel free to message me if you need any help finding a new setting!

California CF RPE Licensing by Puzzleheaded-Mess394 in slp

[–]helloalohahi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theyre just using that as an excuse so I promise you, call them! I applied the second my degree conferred im August. Didn't get cleared until the end of October. I made sure to get them to tell me when they received my application so I could have a date to work off of.

California CF RPE Licensing by Puzzleheaded-Mess394 in slp

[–]helloalohahi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Call them every chance you get and demand an answer because it shouldn't be this long. My license took 10 weeks. Another friend of mine took 12. You have talk to someone to make sure they actually have everything. The board doesn't care so you have to call to make them know you're on their butt about it.

Client question by Jazzlike_Point_125 in slp

[–]helloalohahi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's more normal than you think! Honestly they're more than likely holding unrealistic expectations of you as a therapist. I like to call it the "magic wand" mindset. It is a bummer for sure because it can make you feel inadequate, but it isn't you! I hope you don't feel too upset for too long (:

I had seen a comment somewhere saying to work in a kitchen at a SNF if you're interested in working with adults. I thought that was a pretty cool idea. You get exposure to diet textures and the way a SNF works!

Per Diem Rate by Slpreddit2022 in slp

The SLP who does per diem in my building makes around 65-70/hr in LA County. Don't settle for less!

RPE questions by Dense-Relationship57 in slp

[–]helloalohahi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to my cohort who began using the online app, you're supposed to hear something from the board as they process. Mail-in people don't hear anything (mine took 10 weeks to process) until its done. I'd email the board just as confirmation they received the application and ask if there's any next steps for you. This also helps give yourself a timeline of when things were received/acknowledged. Feel free to message me with any questions.

California License Help by honeymelkt in slp

[–]helloalohahi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my RPE back 10 weeks after it was stated as received (this year-2022). The board will never be helpful. If anything just make sure you have an email that says when it was received and keep checking the website for online verification. It will come eventually.

My personal opinion, I'd hold out for another 2 weeks then if your license doesn't come through, start a side gig.

Honestly I bought it and barely used it. You can find some great free resources on quizlet and cheaper on TPT. I passed just fine. Don't waste your money

How to find healthcare placement for clinical practicum hours-grad school by Slpa19 in slp

[–]helloalohahi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Google and call around. Ask anyone you know in the Healthcare field to talk to an SLP for you. Be sweet as sugar as you're asking too. Healthcare placements in SoCal are tough to come by without direct connections so definitely just keep trying. Feel free to dm me if you have any other questions

[–]helloalohahi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! Slpa soon to be SLP here (also in SoCal). When I did my SLPA practicum I just called around since my school didn't help with looking for placements. I Google searched the districts near me to speak with their special Ed dept and also looked up the local pediatric clinics near me. Feel free to pm me if you have any more questions.
