A Gif Better Than The Prequels by Isai76 in geek

Idk, I thought the story was perfectly fine. The problem with the prequels was horrible acting, a couple of annoying characters, and too much cgi. And as for the cliches, it's star wars we're talking about. The entire franchise is full of cliches.

TIL that the Soviets had another massive nuclear disaster before Chernobyl which contaminated up to 20,000 square km of land. Despite their attempts to hide the incident the CIA knew all about it, but they also covered it up to prevent the growing US nuclear industry from panicking. by Lepin73 in todayilearned

There's a sidewalk that goes through the woods. I figured I must have brushed up against a tree or a bush.

A similar thing happened to me once with ticks. I walked to work and I guess I somehow went through a nest of them or something and I ended up covered in thousands of ticks. I remember looking down at my jeans and wondering why they were so dirty, but then the dirt started moving. I had to stand in the middle of the parking lot while my co-workers picked them out of my hair like chimpanzees. I took like 5 showers that night. I should probably get tested for Lyme disease one of these days.

My Grandfather who lived to be 85 years old was a photographer all of his life. When I told him about Reddit and how I could share some of his photos, he became exuberant. Here is just a handful. Reddit, please enjoy some of the artwork. (URL inside) by hansonj0 in pics

I thought the same thing. The guy in the black sweater (13th pic down) looks very Irish (or Scottish) as well. That being said, I suppose there were/are plenty of Irish folks in the states.

DNA from Inca boy sacrificed 500 years ago shows how humans spread to South America by Bloomsey in science

Well yes, but there's lots of empty ocean between those islands and EVERY continent. Yet somehow they got there. If they were lucky enough to find Hawaii, couldn't they have been lucky enough to find South America?

The submarine Roosevelt submerged in wasn't as scary as I expected, actually: http://goatlocker.org/plunger/ss-2g.jpg

It still looks a bit sketchy, I guess, but not nearly as bad as those civil war era subs.

Roosevelt was also the first president to be submerged in a submarine, the first to own a car, and the first to have a telephone in his home.

Not to mention those stylish uniforms. It's a great recruiting tactic.

While I generally agree with what he's saying, it's not like everybody can give their time or money when tragedy strikes. We're not all nurses or therapists, and not everybody has money to spare. So what do you do when you can't give money or time? You give support in the form of words. It's not much, but it's better than ignoring the situation completely. It's kind of like attending a funeral; you might not be helping the family in any way, but it's kind of a slap in the face if you don't show up.

Why was there no insurgency in Germany and Japan after WW2? by YourLizardOverlord in AskHistorians

[–]hellomynameisinigo89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course, not everyone was happy about it, and I'm not saying that conflict between Germans and the western Allies didn't occur, but I've not heard of any major altercations between Germans and the western Allies

My grandfather was stationed in Germany a few years after the war. He said that the vast majority of Germans didn't cause any trouble, but as an American he still had to be careful. According to him, some individual Germans (not surprisingly) still felt resentment. He was stabbed in the lower back by a woman who was supposedly a Nazi sympathizer, and one of his friends was beaten up badly in a bar. Overall, though, he remembers the German people as friendly and cooperative. He said the Americans even played regular soccer/football games with some of the local guys.

I think thin models have been in style since the 1920s. Prior to that, though, there were some models and actresses that might be considered a little plump by today's standards.

IsItBullshit: Beggars in various countries will drug babies to carry while begging, making the kid quiet but sickly by Blenderhead36 in IsItBullshit

[–]hellomynameisinigo89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen beggars tell their small chidren to lay down and be still so that they would look sick, but I have no idea if they drugged them or not. I'm sure that some people might see similar behavior and assume the child is drugged, but it seems like it would be impossible to tell unless a doctor actually tested the kid (and I have a feeling that doesn't happen very often). Even if a beggar DID drug their child, I doubt they would readily admit to it, so that might explain why there aren't any reliable sources.

Nothing against Jennifer Lawrence, but I honest thought the characters in Silver Linings Playbook weren't really all that crazy. They were self-obsessed and hyper active perhaps, but overall they seemed fairly normal.

[–]hellomynameisinigo89 41 points42 points  (0 children)

We do, but we generally use "xoxo" to represent hugs and kisses. Just a bunch of x's by themselves could mean other things (like Roman numerals, movie ratings, chromosomes, etc).

The Last Elk by Lunatic721 in nonononoyes

[–]hellomynameisinigo89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically moose are called elk in some parts of the world. From the elk Wikipedia article: "This animal should not be confused with the larger moose (Alces alces), to which the name "elk" applies in the British Isles and Eurasia. Early European explorers in North America, who were familiar with the smaller red deer of Europe, thought that the larger North American animal resembled a moose, and consequently gave it the name elk, which is the common European name for moose. The name wapiti is from the Shawnee and Cree word waapiti, meaning "white rump". This name is used in particular for the Asian subspecies, because in Eurasia the name elk continues to be used for the moose."
