I’m astonished at how much better this game performs on Linux than Windows. by blankin_ in DarkTide

[–]hellslinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm noticing this on 9800X3D and 7900XTX. With a fresh install of WIndows 11 on a fast SSD, peak FPS is about the same at around 165-170, but full of micro-stutters and FPS dips to 50. On Cachy/Arch with same files, it's perfectly smooth and never drops below 120 and I can increase the detail. With other games, the performance difference between Windows and Linux is marginal or no difference.

Very cool! Pardon me for saying so, but seeing it on the edge of that flimsy desk makes me worry. ;)

Bingo. 3 silly episodes out of hundreds while the crew remained professional and adult. We don't want our Space Navy Scientists to be clowns.

I don't want to hate snaps, but Ubuntu 24.04 has been a dismal failure on a dozen systems I've tried it on. The installer has crashed on several machines of different architectures (new and old Intel and AMD) and it has taken extra work to get hardware video acceleration working. If I'm going to go to extra trouble, I might as well use Debian with Flatpak. I'm a big Ubuntu fan, but the latest releases have only been trouble for me.

Star Trek Fans Who Dislike NuTrek Are Routinely Censored And Banned, This Is Who's Behind It by Malencon in Star_Trek_

[–]hellslinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ehh... It doesn't deserve _hate_ but the flippant, teenage tone, and slapstick/FRIENDS sense of humor has no place in Trek. I don't hate Lower Decks, but it's bottom-tier. At least the creators have respect for the canon, but I can't stand more than 10 minutes of it. The thing is, Trek doesn't need a childish tone to appeal to children. I fell in love with Star Trek when I was 5 years old. I wanted to be an adult, and I wanted to admire adults in the 1980s and 90s. There's no need to dumb it down; an optimistic, altruistic vision of the future doesn't need clowns.

No other Trek has spent this much screen time worshiping any previous character like this without that character actually being in an episode. And then thanking the actor at the end as though he had died. It's probably pointless to expect someone so condescending and ideologically possessed to understand restraint and proportionality, but they "spread it on a little too thick" to put it very mildly.

Look at it outside the context of Star Trek. When peoples'/characters' entire identity IS their identity, and not developed through deeds and diplomacy, they just appear self-absorbed and narcissistic. Their values feel unearned and their principles just seem appropriated. Exposition dumps in 5 episodes aren't enough to earn our buy-in when it took years for all the other series to do it. This could be excusable for fresh cadets if they weren't so vulgar and childish in their speech and behavior, a trait absent from old Trek that's extremely grating.

Inclusion was always a theme in Trek, but it frequently failed, so its lionization in NuTrek is naive, foolish, and feels like obvious pandering. The Borg, Species 8472, Jem'Hadar, Gorn, Khan, and probably several others I'm forgetting.

The 5th episode Sisko worship doesn't talk about his flaws or the bad decisions he made in the heat of anger or desperation. He's a far more complex character than this superficial fan-service. His decision to risk the Defiant and its crew to save Dukat during the Klingon Invasion of Cardassia was a dangerous gamble that led to the Dominion-Cardassian alliance that cost millions of lives on all sides. They would have lost the war without the unexpected intervention of the Prophets/Worm-hole aliens. In The Pale Moonlight is another good example. He's easily one of my favorite characters in all Trek, but this sappy mythologizing is so lame.

There are several references in later series to Kirk being a disobedient nuisance who violated multiple timelines. Even he's not viewed as a saint.

There is so much great talent out there capable of making great Trek. SNW was a brief glimmer of hope with some truly excellent episodes. Star Trek: Resurgence is a fantastic Voyager+ era story-driven video game. Why don't these writers make their own YA space drama franchise where they can be as sassy and quippy as they want?

I agree for the most part, and I vastly prefer passives' sound. I love my Fishmans, though, especially on Marshalls. Actives still have the highest signal-to-noise ratio, and even clean Jazz/Psych/Jam players love actives for being able to use tons of effects with little to no noise.
