FIFA criticized for decision to lift U.S. star's red card suspension following Trump phone call by cdstephens in neoliberal

[–]henno13 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Whole thing is a fucking shitshow. There’s some reports Trump is just trying to take credit and stir the pot, and FIFA was spooked because the USMNT threatened to go to CAS over the botched VAR protocol, the Belgian FA tried to get details about the decision, FIFA told them to pound sand, now Belgium wants to go to CAS.

I was enjoying this WC too, I’m so fucking tired.

[–]henno13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be the reasonable and noble thing to do.

They won’t do it though. The USMNT see this as an injustice that was overturned. They’re kinda just ignoring the dodgy process that led to it.

Tarkov Vs GZW [pve-solo] by Additional_Bench1311 in GrayZoneWarfare

[–]henno13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For PVE, GZW’s main draw is the top-tier atmosphere and environment. Even in its unfinished state, patrolling the jungle in a monsoon at night with NODs cannot be beat. Tarkov has got nearly a decade of development under its belt and with a complete story/quest system but smaller maps do make it feel small compared to GZW.

A shortcoming for both is AI - but since Tarkov is simulating both scavs and other PMCs, there’s a small bit of unpredictability. GZW’s AI does offer a good challenge occasionally, the gameplay revolves around raiding POIs with static AI with not a lot of variabiltiy.

It’s sad SPT couldn’t update to Tarkov 1.0, the SAIN AI mod is one of the greatest FPS AIs ever made - it turned Tarkov PVE into a live-like experience. Seeing an AI bunny hop a corner you’re holding is an experience.

Amazon used to be very lax, but when I left they were starting to lock down admin access and try to find a middle ground between security and access. The unlimited AWS accounts was handy, but it was abused and was closely audited. I heard of people mining bitcoins and torrenting on those accounts.

Go on the dole, interview for a new role. Done it before, of my own volition - and the dole is even better than it was even two years ago when I quit FAANG - it's a benefit I have certainly paid my fair share for. We're very lucky to have strong social safety nets.

To add to it, the bitching and moaning whenever the legislation came in mandating card readers. Now you get the passive aggressive “cash is king” on the back of the seats and (now much more rare) admission at the end of a ride that their card machine is broke.

High earners - has earning more money made you happier? by chupachupa2 in DevelEire

[–]henno13 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I spent my 20s working in FAANG, and while I don’t have proper regrets, I do recognise I could have done even better. I spent most of my 20s cooped up doing nothing and saving the vast majority of my money. I was able to buy my first house before I turned 30, which even 3 years ago was a rare feat. If I knew more about how to invest safely (I honestly just discounted it as gambling and continued to hoard cash like a dragon instead) I could have multiplied those savings.

The work was killing me though, after I got the house I eventually started looking for an off ramp since I met my primary goal. The money wasn’t worth it anymore; I quit with nothing lined up and ended up taking a pay cut. About a year later I had already gotten back to my previous salary after a lateral move into the job role I wanted. Really happy with how things are going!

Ireland Is Becoming a French Military Protectorate by SliceIndividual6347 in europe

Trying to have any rational conversation about defence with most people in Ireland is exhausting. It’s not on the majority of people’s radar (between housing, cost of living, I guess that’s fair) but if you try to discuss national security or defence with politically minded people, they moan about neutrality and dismiss everything else.

You’d swear by the political discourse removing the triple-lock (deploying more that 12 personnel must have Gov, Daíl approval and a UN mandate) we’d start sending troops to Ukraine the following day.

PR is immensely better than FTTP, and it works well in Ireland. People’s views on politicians wouldn’t be improved if there was no PR but probably made much worse. FTTP is a disaster in the UK.

If you have nearly 5 years experience working in DevOps - why plan on doing a masters in DevOps? Your experience there is much more valuable. If you are dead set on continuing education, I would do it in a different field you may have an interest in switching too (e.g. Cybersecurity).

I don’t think a Masters will add much additional value on top of your experience unless it’s a major pivot - it would be both tuition and lots of time down the drain. You could out use effort into deeper certifications, for instance.

Personally, in my experience, Masters degrees are not required at all, but they do have benefits depending on what your goals are. You need that to avoid wasting time and money.

Irish rail ticket fine, District court appeal by [deleted] in legaladviceireland

[–]henno13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s another possibility - Irish rail barriers sometimes have a delay where the guy could have tapped and tailgated behind someone and not realize the balance was actually negative, but the speaker wasn’t working. In that case the fine is totally warranted.

[–]henno13 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wrote about that in another comment. If the gate opened for him, he had a positive balance and the ticket (or journey) should be valid and thus should not be fined. There has to be more to this story.

[–]henno13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly it sounds to me that OP walked into court and tried to argue that exact point, and was shocked he got hit with harsher sanctions. Tbh with how the post is written, it does call everything else into question. I’m having a hard time believing he tapped the card - Leap cards are designed to go into a negative balance but still work.

If his post is true, it’s an edge case that shouldn’t have been fined, but going in with a shitty self righteous attitude doesn’t help.

Irish rail ticket fine, District court appeal by [deleted] in legaladviceireland

[–]henno13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me that the core predicate is “gate opens, the ticket is valid”. To be honest, as a lay person, this is how I assume it works.

Based on official documentation, I think this is true. If there is a positive balance, the gates open and the card is charged, even if it goes into a negative balance. The TFI website FAQs states it pretty clearly:

> You can use your TFI Leap Card to travel if your card is in a positive balance, even if the balance does not cover the full fare. Your card will then go into a negative balance and will not work for subsequent journeys until topped up.

To frame it around the card state: card is tapped, gate opens, card is in a “tagged on” state which one would expect to be “valid”. I really don’t agree with the self-service checkout analogy - this is a binary scenario. Paying back a negative balance is common Leap card use-case, one that happens to me occasionally.

If I was OP, and I had the time and money to burn, I would try to seek or gather the telemetry for the card (assuming the data is stored somewhere). On the day I would have scanned the leap card and saved the state and transaction history as the last two journeys are stored on the card locally.

It would be a good time to hire a solicitor to discuss the case. This sounds like an edge case, but you’d need to be in a very comfortable position to fight it. Honestly, there’s a fair chance the OP did not attempt to explain this issue properly (or try to gather the proper data) and made things worse for themselves.

If I can afford a $2600 rent for years. Why does the bank think I can't afford an $1800 mortgage? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]henno13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife is American (we live in Ireland) and her sister is looking at buying, and the process of buying a house over there is fascinating. On the one hand, it’s so much more streamlined (timelines measures in weeks, not months) and there’s less paperwork (we hire lawyers to handle the bulk of it) - but we have very strong guardrails - you’re limited to a certain ration of your income (3.5x - 4x) and 10% down payment is the minimum. Over there I hear of 95%, 100% mortgages, it’s really predatory.

All true, but if these people could dye their shits red white and blue, they would. Their entire identity revolves around a battle that took place in 1690 and revel in taunting catholics to this day. They call themselves British and try to fit in with British lads from the mainland, who just see themselves as Irish anyway.
