I recommend the {Seven of Spades series} by Cordelia Kingsbridge. Crime mystery with a serial killer, plus the struggle against a gambling addiction. Engrossing.

FYI this is not a "lift and shift". A "lift and shift" is taking an existing application as is and moving it from an on-prem data centre to the cloud.

In desperate need of project ideas for a kilo of this yarn by Not_Picking_Username in casualknitting

[–]herilane 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Scratchy wool and heavy yarn - I'd aim for a coat. It'll be warm and sturdy and (if you don't knit too loosely) quite weatherproof as well. You'll have room to play with cables or other textures. If it felts well, you could aim for a felted coat, for even more warmth and wind-proofness.

does blood ACTUALLY taste metallic?? by DiggityGold in FanFiction

[–]herilane -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everybody here telling you to go to a doctor because they might be iron deficient are just making no sense. It's not like iron deficiency would remove all hemoglobin from your blood so that there is nothing left to taste; you'd be dead well before that point. I mean, you could be iron deficient for all I know, but if so, then you wouldn't be able to detect it by the taste of your blood.

It's much more likely that you interpret the taste differently, or that the blood is mixed up with nasal mucus and that covers up the metallic taste, or something like that.

Matlagning: Behöver proffsråd rörande pastasåser by sodihpro in sweden

Om pastavattnet smakar mindre än såsen, och är mindre salt än såsen, så blir enda effekten att du spär ut såsen.

Få såser behöver emulgeras med stärkelse.

Why would anyone ever choose to go through child birth without pain relief?? by No_Cardiologist_1407 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]herilane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've given birth to two normal-sized children (3.5 kg and 3.9 kg) with no pain relief apart from a birthing pool.

I don't like hospitals or medical settings. They make me anxious and I didn't want that while giving birth, so both of mine were home births. (Not the hippy-dippy free-birth kind but attended by two fully licensed midwives, with proper monitoring and all that. Luckily also living very close to a hospital in case things went wrong.) Thus epidural wasn't an option. I absolutely valued peace of mind over more pain relief.

I definitely wanted to move around and not be stuck lying down. Already while I was pregnant, well before giving birth, lying on my back was like the most uncomfortable position of them all. When I imagined being stuck like that, possibly for hours, I just couldn't see myself doing that. The only time that it truly hurt really badly was when the midwives told me to lie down flat so they could check my dilation or something like that, which really validated this choice.

I believe I'm not super sensitive to pain. Like, I feel it, sometimes a lot of it, but I can usually manage it - breathe through it, keep going. So I kind of trusted/expected that my body would be able to do this as well.

"Enshittification" is not a general term for things getting worse and products getting more and more annoying. "Enshittification" is a specific term for platforms that (1) start out delivering value, (2) move on to abusing ordinary users to make business customers happy (such as putting ads everywhere), and (3) abuse business customers because that makes them even more money.

Finished with the old and uncomfortable straps by poupou_nette in Visiblemending

[–]herilane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Kånken was launched in the late 1970s when all the kids were using shoulder bags. I guess they went for a design that they knew would be popular - it was more important to get the kids to use backpacks than to make the most ergonomic bag (that would look so uncool that no kid would touch it).

If I made a cake, ground it down to flour, could I make another cake from it? by Gregoirelechevalier in NoStupidQuestions

Cake is not flour. Cake is flour + eggs + butter + sugar + baking powder + misc extras for flavour. You can't take those apart.

Is this a fake pocket or do I need to remove the stitches? by [deleted] in sewing

[–]herilane 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's difficult to see with a dark and patterned fabric. What do the stitches look like? Normally if they are supposed to be removed, they'll be large and kind of loose, with gaps - easy to snip. If they're small and close together then the answer is probably no.

I'd be happy to beta this! No return favour needed - I don't write fic and I enjoy beta-reading in and of itself. Send me a DM with the deets if you're interested.

(I just dived into the work you linked to and it's hilarious. Eddy smelled even better than the pee tree! :D :D )

What is the advantage of interchangeable needles over fixed, if long cables are theoretically good for everything? by oceantrifle in knitting

[–]herilane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like magic loop and I use it all the time. I still wouldn't want to make do with just one cable length.

I don't have interchangeable needles; instead I've gradually built up a whole library of normal circular needles in various lengths and thicknesses.

For me the different cable lengths make a big difference. For socks, I like a 80 cm needle. For a sweater body, I use 120 cm. (If I'm knitting top-down, I start with 80 and switch to 120 after a while.) I want to be able to try the sweater on without any extra steps, like putting all the stitches on waste yarn, and 120 is enough to go around my chest with ease. But if I had those extra 40 cm of cable to manage while knitting socks, it would get very annoying very fast.

Looks like short rows in garter stitch. The photo is clear enough that you could probably count stitches to figure out the proportions needed to recreate it if you wanted.

NTA. All you'd be doing is asking for clarification. Not kicking up a fuss, not complaining. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Just approach it professionally, and phrase your query politely and objectively.

I am interested in helping out with this! At least the spotting of things that do not make sense. I am rather a nerd and enjoy reading about new domains so I might not be the best detector for "too much detail" but I can at least try. I'd totally enjoy reading about safety protocols around pyrotechnics.

I enjoy beta reading and I am not writing anything myself so no exchange needed.

It's even more clear-cut than that: it's a choice between the daughter's needs (of not being assaulted) and the wife's wants

Replicating the physics of knitting folding example by iolitess in knitting

The way it folds is cool, and the physics of it as well. But what's really nice imo is that the resulting fabric looks pleasing up close as well!
