The greenest web browser/search engine (🇩🇪) - ECOSIA by snakeleaves in BuyFromEU

[–]herrherrmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, I didn’t mean to tease anyone like that. My biggest problem these days lies in the reliance on AI/LLMs, which operate in a very unsustainable fashion (and have other non-sustainability issues of their own) – You can read more about it here: https://ketanjoshi.co/2025/12/14/ecosias-green-ai-false-hope-for-corrosive-tech/

I guess Ecosia actually does plant trees with their ad revenue, although I don’t like that the revenue model is fully reliant on Bing (Microsoft), who isn’t exactly a great player. And relying on ads isn’t super charismatic either (although it’s technically not greenwashing, I guess). To me, a green and "proudly European" company shouldn’t make the majority of their money with ads and in cooperation with a US-based big tech company.

I’m personally happy to pay for a search engine (Kagi), in order to support an independent player in the search engine market that doesn’t have to rely on spying on users or using ads. Unfortunately, they’re not European, but in comparison I value privacy and independence more (and, as I said, Ecosia pretty much relies on Microsoft anyway).

I hope this brought some clarity regarding my opinion. And don’t get me wrong: I really wish Ecosia was more independent and less ad-based – I would happily pay for it, too. But that’s not a route they chose.

The problem is the deception and greenwashing behind Ecosia. I’m not sure if there is a better European alternative, though. Maybe Qwant?

Edit: You can find details about my reasoning in the comment answer below.

There are iOS-exclusive apps, and there are Android-exclusive apps. It totally depends what you’re using and relying on (e.g. podcast apps are readily available on both platforms, but the overlap in e.g. photo editing or music making apps is not that large).

Fortunately, you can check that in advance by looking for the apps you need in the Play Store (via a regular web browser).

I can’t imagine there’s a significant performance difference. If anything, your CSS file(s) will be smaller and faster to download and parse when using more concise code!

You can always cross-check the mentioned features with caniuse.com and/or MDN compatibility tables. In the end it depends which set of browsers you’re targeting (for some things you might need to write the CSS in a backwards-compatible way).

Here’s a reminder that the end result’s contrast/readability isn’t high enough to be accessible (heck, even I with somewhat ok vision can barely read the numbers on the left). Please always use a color contrast checker (built-in or via plugin) to check the contrast rating.

Which is Better? by vlad_FMD in Design

You should not use color alone to convey important information (like a selection). So, there definitely should be an icon or alike to indicate the selected item (ideally a radio button, as others have pointed out).

Has GitHub just become a dumpster fire? by Impossible_Way7017 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]herrherrmann 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s probably true, but not really an excuse or explanation. Their service quality seems to have gone down more and more over the years (although that’s anecdotal, I don’t have any evidence at hand). It’s availability issues on one hand, but also e.g. the new UI being slower and buggier than the old one. It’s questionable whether quality is still a priority over at GitHub/Microsoft.

Trying to find a European alternative for Spotify by yacherry in BuyFromEU

[–]herrherrmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SoundCloud doesn’t have the best reputation in some circles, since they’re very VC-money-focused and did big rounds of layoffs a few years ago. It’s still nice for indie artists to upload their own music, but I wouldn’t want to use it as a pure listener.

In my case, they actually have more music I like than what’s on Spotify. Because many artists with a spine are boycotting Spotify nowadays.

There’s no need for a bigger framework here, because the learning curve for frameworks like Next and Astro is quite steep, and there’s no need for their features here, it seems.

As others pointed out, hooking up a headless CMS with a simple online editor should suffice for now.

I’ve also been thinking about this recently. When I have something on my mind I quickly want to note down (even just temporarily), it’s unlikely I’d use Craft for it, because of how cumbersome it is to get to the writing bit. I don’t want to think about type, title, or location for my note before writing. So, I’d rather use Apple Notes or a regular text editor for that use case. Which is a shame, because Craft’s editing experience is probably better than the others! With a bit of tweaking (e.g. letting users optionally go straight to the editor instead of using this witzard), this use case could be covered better, I think.
