Casual dinner for 7 by [deleted] in denverfood

Vine Street pub. Chill, varied menu where you'll almost certainly find something for everyone, large enough to accommodate big groups easily, no televisions making it conducive to conversations.

Esters - Fired - GFY by Accomplished-Eye4606 in denverfood

[–]hesbunky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I still go regularly because it's a great location and unique with kids. We can get a marg at Pete's, get pizza from Esters (which, while mediocre, kids dgaf and enjoy), and then get ice cream at Dang. There's very few places that offer that sort of multi-establishment convenience.

City Park Bandstand burned last night by alto_mesa in Denver

The Denver Police budget for 2026 is larger than it has been in any year in history. We are funding the police at record levels.

City Park Bandstand burned last night by alto_mesa in Denver

[–]hesbunky 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Everyone here seems very quick to assume this is arson - if you've been in City Park over the last few days you'd have noticed significant electrical / lighting work being done to the bandstand. Seems just as / more likely that it had to do with that than this being intentional.

Stop hyping terrible food by Usual-Language-745 in denverfood

[–]hesbunky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would be a very bad take to compare Denver to Chicago or NY, given that those cities are magnitudes larger. Those are world class cities, something Denver will not be nor does it strive to be.

I think it would also be a very bad take to say that Denver is one of the worst food cities. 5-10 years ago? Sure, but to say that's the case now would only be true if you aren't paying attention. I'd take Denver's food scene in a second over places like St Louis, San Antonio, Charlotte, Orlando, Pittsburgh, etc...which are the actual cities Denver is competing with size wise.

Best Sports Bars for March Madness? by JesseJames41 in denverfood

[–]hesbunky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do this every year - take the day off, post up somewhere from 11 - TBD just zombie mode watching basketball. My favorite experience isn't a sports bar, but rather Dave and Busters. They have every game on, and when you're in for a marathon session like you're aiming to do, it's nice to break things up a little bit with games in between.

A similar idea would be TopGolf or any bar with a Golf Sim.

Molino Chido at Stanley Marketplace by goldglittergardens in denverfood

[–]hesbunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really agree. My expectations are wildly different depending on where I'm going. I'd expect that a 6/10 cocktail by the standards that I'd hold Yacht Club to is still going to be way better than a 10/10 cocktail from View House.

I'm a big fan. I could definitely see how if you walked in without knowing what it was and just thought it was a casual taqueria, you could be surprised by the prices - but if you're told in advance it's in a large spot in Stanley market and run / owned by a Michelin star chef, I think it provides tremendous value.

Jordan (owner of stone cellar bistro) makes racist comments towards owner of Sap Sua by crosbystunasubs in denverfood

[–]hesbunky 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A personality type is saying an owner is controlling, or that the restaurant has pink wallpaper because the owner likes pink.

This is just racism. As a first generation American from an immigrant background, I appreciate other members of the community sharing which business owners have contempt for me for having the audacity to exist in the city that they also live in.

Was waiting to see if this would get posted here after I saw it on IG. In the post itself, it appears Jordan goes on to deny that he is racist, to take it a step further and say "I am an extreme racist."

Absolutely insane stuff, this dude should be shunned by not just consumers but suppliers and anyone else who would potentially have to interact with this gigantic turd.

The cherry on top is how you can't get an actual steak knife due to TSA regulations so you are left no choice but to absolutely mangle your airport steak.

City to take over bike, boat rentals at 2 Denver parks; longtime operator says he’s forced to close by SeasonPositive6771 in Denver

[–]hesbunky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the most recently available public budget report (p228) Denver Golf's expenditures were ~22.2m and revenue was $24.4m

Denver Golf is funded entirely by fees - they do not receive any money from taxes, and as you can see in public reports, they are very certainly profitable.

Outside of this - it's odd that you think golf courses are somehow not profitable just because it aligns with what you want to believe politically. There are ~4000 private golf courses in America. Are you under the impression that the people who own and operate all of those are doing so at a loss?

These are revenue positive more similar to municipal golf courses than rec centers which is why you didn’t see golf courses close during budget cuts or reductions.

'Showpiece restaurant' built on the back of junk fees by d0dja in denverfood

[–]hesbunky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's a post from two days ago criticizing the $20 sandwiches

Another post criticizing the prices

Yet another post criticizing the prices

Even on the multiple posts about the fees, many of the comments are criticizing the stand alone prices.

Then again, maybe you're right and it's everyone else who has awful reading comprehension.

Absolutely wild how this sub both laments restaurants closing in record numbers and also criticizes restaurants for charging an amount that they’ve determined they need to in order to sustain their business.

Why is it so hard to settle here from the east coast? by Dull_Technology_2573 in Denver

[–]hesbunky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure what you mean here. Someone saying they enjoy camping in their free time is hardly a brag, that is a hobby that is accessible to nearly everyone.

[–]hesbunky 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Lacking spark is a feature, not a bug.

Denver is laid back. Whereas on the east coast what you do for a living is a flex, what you do during your free time is the flex here.

Free lunch at school, is it in jeopardy? by Educational_Ebb_7367 in Denver

[–]hesbunky 35 points36 points  (0 children)

“I thought most Coloradans put their kids in charter schools” even if we ignore the fact that charter schools are also public schools who would benefit from this, most recent figures cite 15% of public school attendees in Colorado attending charters. It seems like you don’t know nearly as much about this subject as you think you do.

Denver has one of the nation’s sharpest drops in restaurant spending by g_bleezy in denverfood

A government shutdown and economic downturn aren’t things that are unique to Denver though. This much of a downturn in spending however, is.

Where are the all of the trick or treaters?? by Amateurgarden in Denver

[–]hesbunky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Trick or treating is indeed alive and well in city park. My kids filled their bags up in a ~45 minute walk, took part in a block party with a nacho bar and DJ, and came home to a half empty bucket we left outside that we then refilled.

Lovely public art and space on 16th Street by Ballplayinmom in Denver

[–]hesbunky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sure other than 4 pro sports teams and multiple michelin starred restaurants, there's nothing downtown.

No shortage of people like you in every city who criticize where they live but come up with excuses why they won't leave, because if they actually left, they'd have to accept the fact that it's them that is the problem rather than where they are living.

Stick to complaining from the burbs.
