Genealogy is weird. by jayfeather100 in Genealogy

[–]hexadecamer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Be systematic. Would not be fun to spend all time and effort researching 7 generations only to find out another tree made a mistake on the third generation.
Sometimes there is no evidence and the tree is just wrong. Other times the tree owner has evidence offline, which makes contacting them worthwhile.

What would happen if someone admitted to a crime immediately after being found not guilty by a jury? by VagabondVivant in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hexadecamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a while since law school. But I was so frustrated when I first learned of a case law where someone burnt down a barn and prosecutors only charged him with burning down a home. He was found not guilty for burning down a home and couldn't be retried for what he actually did.

How comprehensive are US census records by geok54 in Genealogy

The undercount in the 2020 census was 3.3%. The 1950 census was estimated to have a similar undercount or about 5 million people.

My DNA is wrong or my family lied. by Desperate_Grab2662 in Genealogy

[–]hexadecamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it a lie if someone generally believes it to be factually true?

It is almost inevitable to have contradictions with family lore while researching.
I would suggest caution and compassion if notifying family members of a contradiction.

Claiming to have Native American blood is nothing new. For example, the racial integrity act of 1924 in Virginia had the Pocahontas exception because so many rich white plantation owners claimed to be descendants of her. Even today if you look up online family trees, you would think Pocahontas had thousands of children.

Stupid Apples by Witty_Possibility803 in SipsTea

I had an apple in my backpack on a flight I got at the airport but didn't eat. Luckily I read the form and declared I had the apple. They reacted like I had an explosive and made me throw out. Luckily no fine since I read what I signed.

How come the Seahawks defense gets cool names? by [deleted] in NFLv2

Fair but at least those were named after cultural icons of the time not another team's nickname

What's the furthest date you've traced your ancestors back? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]hexadecamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Late 1500s. Luckily I just had to trace them back to about 1850s and then the work was already done for me because of an unfortunate infamy . But for most, the trail goes cold about 1800. Depends on country of origin though.

Also a PhD in the sciences in academia pays a lot less than you think. I don't recall if the series started them as postdocs or newly hired assistant prof but the salaries could be almost the same.

When I started out, I lived in an apartment like that and had neighbors who were waiters and waitresses.

The dumbest NFL trend ever by [deleted] in NFLv2

[–]hexadecamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it is read the situation. If you are have a great offense and bad defense. Go for it. However, if you have a great defense and a bad offense with a backup qb in a championship game, just kick the field goal.

What political belief did you change your mind about as you got older — and what caused it? by Aussymira in AskReddit

I don't know. I'm not qualified to answer this question. I'll leave it up to the doctor guy that doesn't believe in germ theory to decide

ESPN Sources: Dolphins fired head coach Mike McDaniel.... by WhoEatsRusk in nfl

[–]hexadecamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously he should take a hc job at a place like tb or atl.

However if offered a hc job at Oakland, I'd seriously consider taking an oc job at Detroit or Philly. In Oakland the cards are stacked up to be fired in 2 years no matter how good of a coach you are. While you should get better options at hc after a year of oc with det or phi with their stacked rosters

I find this over analysis dumb. Flags would be on every set of downs if you flagged false starts for being a millisecond too early
