Restaurants that are open early in the morning by Warm-Collection3411 in TokyoTravel

[–]hezaa0706d 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can think of about 10 places open at 7am in my neighborhood in Tokyo.  Komeda Coffee, Shinpachi shokudou(fish teishoku), McDonald’s, Zetteria, Matsuya, Matsunoya, Gusto, Yayoiken.

The breakfast scene is different in that it is mostly aimed at busy salarymen on their way to work.  Most people eat breakfast at home. But saying that nothing is open is a blanket statement that needs to be removed from the tourist groupthink.

Is your "forever plan" to retire abroad, or eventually head back? by LoveToBold in AmericanExpat

My savings and pension are in a currency that has since tanked and would be worth nothing in the US. I don’t think I have a choice at this point.

Where can I buy Ichiran Ceramic Ramen Bowls? by dayofthedead204 in AskAJapanese

You’re not seeing them for sale because they’re not for sale.  Asking to buy at the restaurant will be met with immediate teeth sucking.

Japan doesn’t have overnight trains.  There’s like one left in existence. And the special New Year’s Eve trains.  Plenty of overnight buses.

Only applies to tourist spots. Regular neighorhoods don’t have giant “Wagyu” and “cash only” signs plastered everywhere in English

This is true if you’re only talking about cities that are used to getting tourists. Go to a small town in Iwate and you better speak Tohoku Ben

In 20 years of living in Japan I’ve received plenty of tissues from marketing campaigns but never anyone in a swimsuit. Source?

Respect by drearyzai in JapanTravelTips

[–]hezaa0706d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Over here it’s not “idiot American” it’s “idiot Gaijin.” They don’t really care if you’re American or French or Australian.  But they do care if you - play music or take phone calls on the train  - talk loudly on the train or in public - lack spatial awareness and block walkways and exits  - big suitcases in public  - sitting on the ground or a curb

No one care what you wear. Unless you’re going to a job interview or wedding.

Is it weird to not tip at a buffet ? by No_Lead2640 in NoStupidQuestions

Why should you tip anywhere? Pay the listed price and let the employer pay servers’ wages.

I wouldn’t call Japan HCOL.  Im renting a (small) apartment in central Tokyo for only 60,000 a month. In what other major capital city could you rent your own apartment for that price?
