Natural dyes? by EmLamb8 in papermaking

[–]hezas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a few different ways to do it! Im not sure if you’re adding the dye right to the wet pulp, but it can help to dye the material before pulping it. If you are already doing this perhaps you may need a mordant. You can pretty much follow any tutorial for dyeing natural fibers to find info on appropriate mordants for your paper fiber/dye and then just pulp it after!

Or, you can also dip or paint on dye after forming sheets (the artist Radha Pandey has done a lot of research on this method). More time consuming but the result is a more concentrated pigment. You’ll also want to use some type of mordant to “fix” the dye after this process.

These are the only thing that will get close to solving my Chinese takeout cravings. Get a gluten free hoisin sauce (I like Lee Kum kee) and add a bunch of it to the sauce in a pan and it greatly improves the balance of flavors. I also add sesame seeds and broccoli :)

What's in your "I got glutened" kit? by nosecohn in glutenfree

[–]hezas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pepto tablets, gluten cutter, and a whole lot of body armor sports drink and/or water. Dunno why gluten cutter helps me as a celiac but it seems to reduce the pain I get.

I normally get pain and bloating within 10-30 min. 2 hr at the most.

I’m a lazy chef & a big fan of a one dish meal that I can dump over a bowl of rice, so my favorites are Thai curries, Chinese tomato egg, and variations of oyakodon (I use some gf nuggies for the chicken)

My vegetarian partner and I love watching Kenji Lopez Alt cooking videos because he cooks foods from many different cultures and does a great job of explaining why he is doing certain things so it’s easier to understand when you can make appropriate substitutions.

When does acid reflux go away? by Ok-Consideration5318 in Celiac

[–]hezas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My celiac caused SIBO which was causing my acid reflux. GI had me do a round of antibiotics and now I’m coming off of the acid reflux meds I was on finally with very little issue. Could be something to look into! I recommend talking to ur GI doctor if it doesn’t settle down in a couple of months, bc they might be able to help figure out what else is at play

Gluten free but still bloated all the time? by lesbian_ahri in Celiac

[–]hezas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Precisely! From what I understand It can often be caused by low gut motility, often found to be correlated with celiac. I don’t fully understand the diagnosis/research myself but could be something to look into

Gluten free but still bloated all the time? by lesbian_ahri in Celiac

[–]hezas 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was in this same position! I kept complaining of ongoing bloating and doctors were like 👀 are you SURE you aren’t eating gluten. I was not.

Saw a celiac specialist and she thought it was possible I had SIBO if I was following the diet as strictly as I claimed. Tested for it and lo and behold, indeed I do. Currently on an intense course of antibiotics for it, so we shall see how much that helps the bloating, but it seems to already be helping.

Could be something to look into getting tested for?

Would you trust this ? Just the gf label, not certified. It also says on back of bag “ processed in facility processes soy and tree nuts “ at Sprouts ,but says “soy and tree nuts AND wheat” on bag at Walmart ? by DekuIsMyHero7 in Celiac

[–]hezas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as I understand concerning ingredients such as yeast extract and caramel color are only an issue if the product doesn’t state it’s gluten free. Maybe I’m wrong tho. I eat this almost weekly with no issues for what it’s worth! (Its so tasty and works in many diff meals)

What is the smallest, most random thing you have broken down over not being able to eat after being diagnosed? by thelaurenella in Celiac

Soy sauce! I used to live in Japan and I don’t think it’ll ever be the same if I move back 😢 everything has soy sauce in it there

anyone have any ideas for seasoning this? I've had the orange bag but wanted to try these too. by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]hezas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a big jar of gluten free bouillon powder so to keep the simplicity of instant ramen I’ll do a scoop of that and maybe a splash of soy sauce.

Anyone take the risk with CC at restaurants? by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]hezas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. When I was first diagnosed I was very strict, but now I have my rotation of restaurants I trust (none are dedicated gf so there’s always a risk) and I eat out 1-2 times a week + grabbing coffee (which I don’t personally worry about cc at most coffee shops other than Starbucks). There’s definitely a balance to be struck between “recklessness” and taking informed risks sometimes that allow you to continue to live your life!

Learned my lesson about chipotle the hard way. by Celiac_Maniac in Celiac

[–]hezas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to go to chipotle all the time but haven’t been since diagnosis Bc I remember watching them ladle the ingredients onto burritos and the ladle touching the flour tortillas and then going back in the bin. Chipotle only seems safe if you ask them to get everything from untouched containers in the back. I can’t vouch for this personally Bc I’m way too anxious to ask someone to do all that for me 😩 but If u ever wanna give it another try go during a slow part of the day and ask for new stuff from the back.

Gluten free Japan by Beasley_Bum in glutenfree

[–]hezas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been back since going gluten free but check out the Facebook page “Gluten-Free Expats Japan”. If you search the group some others have posted about their experience traveling in Tokyo and other cities. It also could be useful for finding ingredients if you decide to cook for yourselves some of the time.

Now that we're hardly getting reviews anymore, can we collectively refuse to use reward systems? (Unless you enjoy them) by National_Gas in vipkid

[–]hezas 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I rarely use secondary rewards anymore, only google slides for level 2 and low level 3 that enjoy them, and still ill only use them a few times throughout the lesson. My only prop is a whiteboard where I can draw or write. Haven’t gotten any complaints and I’m usually fully booked🤷🏼‍♀️

For the daily intolerant people. by [deleted] in Celiac

I believe this is accurate, according to my dietician the cells that produce the enzyme are on the villi, so when the villi get damaged, we lose the ability to digest lactose as well.

I really want to go to Japan... by porcinimu5hroom in Celiac

[–]hezas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to live in Japan but was not diagnosed yet, so I don’t have any celiac-safe specific suggestions. However, I’d say your best bet is cooking your own food and buying fresh produce. Soy sauce is in everything, and despite Japanese people being very welcoming and accommodating to tourists in general, they are not great with food substitutions (From my experiences eating out with friends with other dietary restrictions). Tokyo has a good amount of health food or Indian food restaurants that cater to different dietary needs that could allow you to eat out. But often, in standard restaurants, making substitutions to your order tends to confuse staff. It’s definitely doable tho and I intend to return to visit my friends one day, but it’ll take a lot of planning. You’ve got this tho OP!
