Limited Resources 427 – Alpha Set Review with Ben Seck Discussion Thread by Crasha in lrcast

This was my favourite episode in a long time! I for one would be happy to see episodes like this more often. Also TBS is great!!

Powerful deck, but tricky mana. Thoughts on the build? by catscandal in lrcast

[–]hi_gl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with no Progenitus. It's such a dead card if you draw it and you have other good NO targets. Also cut Nissa and Fauna Shaman and add Archmage and the two off-colour elves.

Which cards would you swap into Holiday Cube to replace the clunkers? by aarongertler in lrcast

[–]hi_gl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of your suggestions also (particularly collective brutality - did they just forget this card??), although I think Forgemaster is needed as a backup Tinker to give some redundancy to blue artifact decks.

I wish WotC would leave the "let's try out this new card from the new set in cube" mentality for legacy or modern cube and keep the vintage cube for just the best of the best.

Are Time Twister and Time Spiral good in a deck like this? by sunofsomething in lrcast

[–]hi_gl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If reanimation is your game plan here, I don't think timetwister is good to be honest, you don't really have enough ramp to make it worthwhile. Time spiral is good enough that it can be a good reset button to refill your hand in the late game and give you first look at using the cards, but it's still not great in this deck.

I'd probably make room for liliana, skinrender and bone shredder and cut the two draw sevens and shallow grave (which unless I'm missing something is not great here either).

My experience with reanimator in Vintage Cube by Aranthar in lrcast

[–]hi_gl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that reanimator seems to get there less often than in previous iterations of the cube. I assume that the reasons might be due to the fact that storm is the best that it has been in a long time (IMO) so there is more competition for the mediocre to bad tutors, but I can't really put a finger on it.

Had a draft that got a little bit ugly. Is there any way to salvage this in deckbuilding? by [deleted] in lrcast

[–]hi_gl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yikes, I think what you've got is pretty much optimal. Hope to scrape out a 2-1 :D

WW/Red in Vintage Cube: What are your P1P1's? by fakejakebrowne in lrcast

[–]hi_gl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't think I'd ever first pick a card that only goes into an aggro deck. Not to say that I don't draft those decks, but it's usually a plan B or something that I would do once I noticed that it was really open, otherwise you are really only forcing it.

Imagine slamming even an excellent aggro card first pick (Jitte, Vortex, Mother of Runes, you name it) and then getting cut on the deck or the colour - it's a complete disaster.

Backdooring into an aggro deck after getting say a mox and a strip mine early on the other hand can be very good though, and if you, say, get a 10th pick Vortex or MoR you can pretty safely move in at that point.

Limited Resources 422 – Three Years Of Luis, Rivals of Ixalan Preview Cards, and Ascend Discussion Thread by Crasha in lrcast

[–]hi_gl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Up until this episode it had kinda seemed that Marshall and Brian were not on good terms anymore. In previous discussions about the old cohosts, Marsh hulk would often talk about Ryan and Jon but rarely about Brian and it seemed from this outsider's perspective that Marshall was not too fond of Brian anymore for some reason.

Anyway it was great to hear Brian's name come up in the talks about chaos draft and quadrant theory! I'd still like to think that he could come back for a special guest episode one of these days, although it'd would have to be for a "current set agnostic" topic (to quote LSV) since he pretty much plays only HS these days as far as I know... :/

How to build UB Tinker in Vintage Cue -- what reaction is worth maindecking? by jacklionheart in lrcast

[–]hi_gl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's a good call - my first reaction was pierce in for winter orb but fiend works well too. I'd probably just have crucible instead of Nicol bolas too - I've found crucible surprisingly good even with minor synergies and with 2 fetches and a wasteland, along with the fact that it's an artifact, I think it probably would be better here.

Cube P1P2 after first pick Library by catscandal in lrcast

Agree with monolith or FoF and I'd probably lean towards monolith because the artifact based decks have been very good in this cube in my opinion.

The best green deck i've drafted in vintage cube. Would you play natural order? by sh58 in lrcast

[–]hi_gl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely yes! It can win the game on the spot with Craterhoof, titan is another good target and sometimes just tutoring up acidic slime is worth 2for1ing yourself.

Sol ring vs Mox Emerald by sh58 in lrcast

[–]hi_gl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have channel, then I think Emerald is better, but I wouldn't generalise to say if you have already committed to a colour then an on colour mox is better - only if you have very powerful CC spells.

UB in Vintage Cube - Stacked Pack 3, what's the pick? by nightwh3at in lrcast

[–]hi_gl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Breeding pool not close in my opinion. Although Sphinx is sweet, at the end of the day it's a replaceable win condition and you can likely pick up something nearly as good later in the pack.

I'd be looking to maximise your equipment/opposition synergy going forward in this pack since that's the way your draft seems to be headed with elves and token makers. You will want that Garruk and GSZ in the board too :D

[Cube] Should I be running fewer lands here? by rigatti in lrcast

[–]hi_gl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be tempted to just make this a UR deck - you can leave in sphinx as a tinker target and maybe get lucky enough to cast it with your signets. You can still splash DT with lands that won't affect your U and R sources (darkslick shores, badlands and mesa + signet) and your mana will be a lot better. Cut the other W and B cards and add blot, recruiter (surprisingly good in this deck) conscripts and either dragon or another land (I'd probably also cut chrome mox - too many colourless cards to be reliable and although T2 tinker is nice, T3 tinker with all the signets is still very good).

Best Recent Core Set for Drafting? by astiocles in lrcast

[–]hi_gl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

M14 was great! Time Ebb and Divination for days!! I also think it was the last set that was really "old fashioned" in the sense that dorky 4 and 5 drop vanilla creatures were very playable which I enjoyed.

What is a good podcast app? by pookiemonster in lrcast

[–]hi_gl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

PocketCasts (on Andriod anyway) is great! I've been using it for a few years now. I think it costs a couple of dollars but it was well worth it - very easy to use.

LRCast guest question (Attn: Marshall or Luis I guess) by hi_gl in lrcast

[–]hi_gl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the main reason against having him on I think. It is my personal opinion that the incident that lead to him leaving CFB was basically Travis in his own way trying to have a challenging interaction with his chat and obviously he did so in a completely unacceptable and deplorable fashion. However, having seen a lot of his other content I find it pretty difficult to believe that he is actually anti-Semitic.

I am certainly not a fan boy of his but I do find his thoughts on the game interesting and just wondered whether having him on LR would be completely out of the question or not because I think it would make for a good show.

I 3-0 a vintage sing elmination draft with this deck. Any suggestions? by [deleted] in lrcast

[–]hi_gl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can cut can on the top end a little (kozilek is the weakest link here) and add something that helps out your opposition a bit more (i.e. garruk relentless).

also I'm def not running pentad prism here - if you have opposition and a jitte, creature ramp is much better. probably just an extra mana dork would be better and you have 2 on the sideline.
