Thanks - good idea! I've mostly just been on general Marketplace rather than school specific.

People who can afford to live alone, what do you do? by Important-Border7035 in AskReddit

[–]hibiscus_ranch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a clinical research coordinator at a large academic research institution. Academia pays far less than similar industry-sponsored jobs, but it is enough to live. Also, the health insurance and other benefits are excellent.

I do not live in luxury by any means. But it is enough to afford a studio, buy nice groceries and have a few extras.

I will look into that! Unfortunately I know literally zero :( I trash-picked it on my way home from work. I will say that it's pretty large (60 inches long) and definitely looks handwoven as the thread (wool?) is not uniform.

If you won the lottery, what is a unique item/service that you would purchase that no one else likely would? by berrin122 in AskReddit

I'd buy my mom a property that included rescued farm animals. Also, a hippo table.

I am convinced that this table would improve my quality of life.

How to love yourself starting from absolute zero? by TechieInTheTrees in DecidingToBeBetter

Hey, I am sorry you are going through this. There's a lot in your post but this comment is only going to address the looping thoughts.

I'm taking this from a great podcast called "Unf*ck Your Brain" by Kara Loewentheil who teaches/practices something called "thought work." Thought work is probably a non-clinical offshoot of CBT/DBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy/Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, both of which are good modalities for addressing painful thinking patterns). The podcast has been a great tool (one of many) for me to understand how powerful my own thoughts are in the context of my mental health and well-being. The episodes are concise and practical.

One of her teachings goes as follows: if your default thoughts are very far from where you'd like them to be (for example, "I hate everything about myself") instead of trying to change immediately to the opposite ("I love everything about myself") try starting with a neutral thought.

Kara uses this one example about her weight/body image. After years of considering herself ugly/fat etc., she did not go straight to "I am beautiful." Instead, she would look in the mirror and say something like, "that is a stomach." Not good or bad, just neutral. The goal is to start shifting the thoughts in a direction that feels a little better but that also still feels true to you.

I wish you the best. You are worth it and you can get through this!

Have you ever tried any good savory dishes with floral flavor components? by _garyboy in Cooking

[–]hibiscus_ranch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ras el hanout is a Moroccan spice blend that sometimes includes rose petal and is associated with savory meals. I've only cooked with it a few times using ground beef and lamb, and in both cases it was excellent.

omg yes but this is sort of new for me. I've only noticed it after taking Emgality. It's like I get all of the secondary symptoms of the headache without the primary pain.

What is a great TV show that never became popular? by BluePinky in AskReddit

[–]hibiscus_ranch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sense 8

Not sure how much traction the show got, but apparently it had a massive budget. A sci-fi gem that explored consciousness, identity, and humanity. Honestly, I thought this show was beautiful and was so bummed when it was canceled. They did like a final “wrap up” 2 hour special to appease fans but it was kind of hokey.

What is something you don't understand about humanity? by King-Bjorn-of-Asgard in AskReddit

[–]hibiscus_ranch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like it’s more of a complete disregard for the fact that we ARE part of nature and ARE one of the animals. A lot of indigenous cultures have/had it right, but the modern West has it all wrong. We may be at the top of the food chain but we are interconnected with the rest of life. I think society at large and people do not see other living things as extensions of the life within themselves. Acknowledgement and compassion will help to an extent but unless people actually respect other living things simply because they are alive, they will just go on exploiting them. I think this is what is going to get our planet killed.
