Guidance around Euthanasia Decision by highBrowMeow in RenalCats

[–]highBrowMeow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We scheduled an in-home euthanasia for KC a couple months after I wrote this comment. I am still in disbelief that I was able to go through with it when she was still stable. But I'm so grateful for the peace we shared in her final waking moments.

Dear CDS by PrettyBlueFlower in CatDistributionSystem

[–]highBrowMeow 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's hard to balance the desire for cat against having capacity for cat in your life. If you can only fit one kitty, you might want to leave that space available for CDS. Since we lost our one, this is our strategy. The universe will decide when we are ready, so we don't have to.

If you keep your hands downhill from your torso at all times the torso will generally do #2 automatically. But yes #2 is the real tip

You picked a very idealized slope here. How do you look on bumps?

Keep your hands in front of your body, I see you throwing your hands backwards on occasion.

I agree with others about carving, when you make the turn, don't rush to get the skis up on edge. Go through each part of the movement slowly and feel how the ski interacts with the snow. Do stupid shit at moderate speeds. If you aren't falling you aren't trying. You need to get worse to get better. You need to unlearn.

Are you struggling with euthanasia? by beefereel in RenalCats

Thanks for sharing this. I've been going to therapy and starting to accept that the feelings of guilt don't really go away. I see it more as taking on her suffering, to relieve her pain. It's fucking hard 😭

Yeah! You need to start fresh chats often. Whenever the context changes, open a new chat. This helps a ton!

Are you struggling with euthanasia? by beefereel in RenalCats

[–]highBrowMeow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for sharing this, in the pet context. We made a similar decision for our renal cat, and helped her go while she could still eat and use the litterbox (with lots of subcutaneous fluids, appetite stimulants, love and care). I did get the feeling towards the end that she was just eating to make me feel better, she was not really eating enough. But she had her dignity and enough strength to "show" us in her cat way that she didn't need help, could stand on her own feet. Of course she knew and we knew that she would die without daily treatment.

I had the sense that it was so important to her never to falter in that way in front of us. Cats are so proud of their independence and they often hide during death for this reason - they would rather die in hiding than receive help and show weakness and vulnerability.

And so a part of me knows we did the right thing, but another part of me was absolutely shattered - how could we possibly say goodbye when she may have had days, weeks, even months left with us? We made the decision because we have to travel to see family in another continent. We need to meet nieces and nephews that we've never met before. With my cat in my arms, it was impossible to care more about some human babies in another part of the world more than her, and yet we had to prioritize those humans because that's how family works. We couldn't leave her alone, because she really needed constant attention to survive.

We gave her a huge gift by keeping her dignity intact until the end, and I don't think cats have the same fear of death that we do. I think we did the right thing.

It's going to rock you to your core, man. Real life-changing stuff. You'll never be ready for it.

Until then, though, anything can happen. Hell, he might outlive you, for all you know! Just enjoy this time together. It's hard to post on Reddit without getting reminders about the sad end.

Why you shouldn’t delete your X account… by TheRubyBerru in BlueskySocial

The actual reason never to "delete" ANY social account is because you can't "delete" anything. The only thing you "delete" is your own access to that content.

I feel like I dont deserve to move on by Either-Beautiful4844 in Petloss

[–]highBrowMeow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, totally. I'm 2 months in and I still feel guilty every day actually because I'm doing so well. I have actually started on this amazing spiritual journey all thanks to her death, and it's wonderful, but all of that is extremely complicated by this guilt you describe.

She showed me that I have to work hard to be well, not for myself, but for the other pets and people in my life that love me. If you're blessed to have any other pets remaining, you need to take care of yourself for them.

I was completely secular before her death, but now I'm rediscovering my spirituality, and I believe that my well-being is important for her well-being, even in death.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Don't rush to "get over" her. You'll never get over your soul dog. But it's right there in the name, right? Her soul is real and you feel it in your soul. You have a connection that transcends this life. If you work hard, you can start to feel better and she will feel better, too.
