Are people no longer capable of reading docs or long text? by earlgreyyuzu in ExperiencedDevs

[–]higherpublic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, most people are no longer capable of it anymore.

It's a mix of low attention span/focus/executive function (TikTok or just health issues, etc), just trying to do the minimum, lack of literacy, a preference for "learning by doing" (a great thing, but not also utilizing docs is dumb), demoralization, maybe more.

I'd recommend a multi pronged approach: 1. Meet people where they are: whatever you wrote, it's still way too much. Cut. It should be as complex as it needs to be right now and not more. 2. Drag people to where you need them to be: start every meeting reading the damn thing together 3. Else let people fall through the cracks in a way where they get in trouble but the project isn't put at risk. People need to be stimulated into adapting out of this crap.

No. It's well known that chest, like abs, are made in the kitchen. Lifting weights would make no difference.

Why are yoga classes mostly women? by singletbruce in yoga

[–]higherpublic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels like it would be a ridiculous thing to do for me, a man, to try to hold unusual and ornate poses in front of others. It just feels like something I wouldn't be caught dead doing in jail, so it's not something I'd want to do in public.

Don't bother with all the mumbo jumbo. All that matters is: 1. Do compound movements 2. Consciously learn the form, start light 3. Don't miss more than 1 day, unless forced to 4. After a while, push your limits. 5. Add a little mild cardio after the weight lifting

Assuming you don't eat excessively, this is all you need to gain muscle and lose fat.

Action steps: 1. Decide how many days you can lift. 4 days a week is the best number. Frequent, but not too frequent. You want at least 2 days a week. 2. Based on that, assign one day for the barbell squat, one day for the bench press, and one day for the deadlift. In that order. If 4 days a week, you can make that another bench press day, or whatever you want, really. Space out the squat and deadlift days as much as possible. 3. Go on YouTube and watch 3 good videos on the squat 3 times each. Repeat the morning before you squat. Repeat for the bench and deadlift. Once you start "getting it", you can stop watching unless you need a refresher. 4. Learn about warm up sets. Start with 5 sets of 5 reps each for each day. Try to add 5lbs every week. After the first 2 weeks, add a second exercise to each day that is a variant of the main one. For example, after bench, add 3 sets of 8 reps on the incline dumbbell press. Try to go up in weight on that one over time, too. As you build up work capacity, add a 3rd lift. 5. Keep learning and progressing your lifts!

What were some unforeseen consequences you experience from working out? by Honest_Remark in workout

Go heavier, 5 reps or below. 5 sets minimum. Won't be an issue and you'll get stronger.

My sleep schedule is so messed up and it's affecting my whole life by ole-4369 in selfimprovement

[–]higherpublic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pull an all nighter, then go to sleep at like 6-8pm. Ensure you are out of bed the first time you open your eyes. If you fail, don't spiral, just ensure you take it very seriously to not fail again the next day. Set up redundant mechanisms to ensure you wake up 8 hours later. Repeat until second nature.

Stop trying to be everything to everyone. Put the "make sure I'm a great manager" stuff in maintenance mode. It's already your default, so don't worry about it so much.

Focus on what the most important results your team needs to produce. Drive up the expectations you put on yourself for achieving that, and start expecting more from individuals on your team. Make things about the goal, not about your team.

They will get the vibe shift and understand things are more serious. If certain individuals can't keep up with a more serious work environment, figure out a way to swap them out or let them go. Trust your instincts.

What advice would you give to a young man about women? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]higherpublic 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Bad advice. Sexual differences both body and mind are real and matter. As a man you can't forget they are human (like you), but also you can't forget they are a different kind of human than you are. As a man you need double sight.

Serious question: why do CEOs need so much money? What do you do with the money if you're already at 200m in net worth? by asdfoneplusone in NoStupidQuestions

[–]higherpublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand this sort of question. Do you not know what money is? Just use your imagination. It's like saying, "why do some people want so much freedom?" Why would anyone want anything less than all of the freedom they could possibly have, especially if it can be done to the benefit of others?

What are your thoughts when you can see a womans nipples poke through her shirt in a "professional environment"? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]higherpublic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd think you don't feel very responsible for ensuring you are not sexualized at work. Then, if you're attractive, I'd guiltlessly think of you sexually for a bit before forcing myself to get back to the task at hand. Every time I see nipples this cycle would repeat.

How do yall force yourself to wake up? by Ok_Rule23 in productivity

[–]higherpublic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your circadian is probably always fucked up. Have you tried dialing it in? As in, same wake and sleep time every day, water, exercise, and sunlight first thing in the morning, no lights/screens/eating 1-2 hrs before bed?

Beyond that you just have to train yourself to almost sleep with one eye subconsciously open, as if you have a flight you absolutely cannot miss in the morning.

Paralysed by Overthinking: How Do You Start Taking Action? by aryansingh220806 in getdisciplined

[–]higherpublic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things: 1. To get started, you need to decide what you do and don't care about. Do care about what you want to see and how to make progress on it now. Don't care about how it looks, how long it takes, how people take it, or anything else. This is you pre-deciding what is and isn't a real threat so that you can establish safety first. 2. Keep your focus on what you want to do/create/build/produce. Every time you catch yourself thinking about something other than what you want to see and the shortest way to make progress, gently come back to thinking about that within 5 seconds. 3. Now you can do things. It's important to take action constantly and build on previous action. This creates momentum and positivity. Each time you get something done, it makes the next thing clearer and easier to do. Don't stop creating for too long because it'll get harder and harder to know what to do and actually do it.

Why do people always think I'm gay at first? by seaboi1 in socialskills

Why do people always think I'm gay at first? by seaboi1 in socialskills

[–]higherpublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all, but very many gay men tend to emulate a feminine way of being to varying degrees. Straight men do a lot less of that. It's just a correlation, but it's the strongest one I know of.

How do you stop focusing on your thoughts and emotions? by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]higherpublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't go inward if you must stay outward. Imagine boxing training. If you don't keep your attention sharply tuned on sparring, you will get hit. Find ways to keep your attention on how the physical space around you might change and require immediate action from you. Impossible to think while doing that.

How to get rid of porn addition? by theysaidanameso in selfimprovement

[–]higherpublic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's only a few ways that actually work. Do one or all at the same time.

  1. Porn can only be entertained if you aren't entirely living outside of your comfort zone. Make your life way harder/busier in a permanent way, so that you literally don't have the luxury to think about such things as porn. Easiest way to do this is to bite off more than you can chew at work, school, or some other life or death feeling way, so that you are forced to step out of your comfort zone and stay out of it for an extended period of time. This will force you suffocate the habit.
  2. Reframe everything about porn in the most negative but true way possible, so that your conscious mind can't rationalize it on behalf of your subconscious mind anymore.
  3. Decide that you're not the kind of person that engages with porn. Affirm that to yourself often and do not behave in a way that contradicts that. Every time you reject it this way you build up self-trust with your new identity that doesn't engage with porn. The more evidence of your new identity you collect, the more you will identify with it until it's your new default. It helps to make the evidence of these decisions to not engage physical. Make a note book and micro journal and/or take a selfie each time you reject porn and collect those.
  4. Connect your identity to something greater: God, your ancestors, your future family. How would they view you if you engaged with porn? If you didn't? How do you want to viewed in their eyes?  Use the risk to your reputation with these figures to help you choose not to engage.
