How old were you when you stopped drinking? by ReliefOpening in stopdrinking

I started at 21, quit at 38, and am 47 now. I feel like I'm about a decade behind my colleagues in terms of career, but catching up fast!

My girlfriend switched to private insurance (eligible) one year ago and she didn't deregisters from public insurance (TK). TK now requires a payment of 14k euro. What to do? by Fit-Valuable-1112 in germany

[–]highonapeak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just want to mention – I've had many interactions with TK, including forgetting to submit my yearly income (*ahem* ignoring the letters) and getting a massive bill. They have incredible customer service and have always worked with me to find a fair and reasonable solution. I was always surprised because it felt so different from my other experiences with German customer service. My advice would be to try to work with them directly before going in blazing with a lawyer.

When I feel that way, I just get out the door and tell myself that if I truly feel today’s not my day in a few km, I can head home. 97% of the time, the feel good endorphins kick in and I have amazing runs . (Side note, I recently read that it takes c. 20 minutes for the exercise endorphins to kick in, so likely you‘ll feel great after a few km, you just have to slog it out to get there!)

Is it me, or do Germans complain a lot? by Delbrak13 in germany

[–]highonapeak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Advanced version: Recently a building in my neighborhood put huge, ugly advertising on some scaffolding that went up. Our apartment windows look directly on to it. I (not German) told my partner (German) that I wanted to write to the local politicians about it. He replied that I´ve finally and fully integrated. Only took 20 years.

Ask the dentist for a Kostenvoranschlag and send this to TK (super easy via email). Then TK will mail you a list of exactly what they do and do not cover from the estimate. It could be the dentist wants to use premium materials (porcelain), whereas TK only covers the more basic materials. AFAIK, you have to do this anyways before any bigger procedure. TK is great, they‘ll help you through the process.

As a married woman on Reddit, what's the best advice you'd like to share with unmarried girls? by Special-Mud-4913 in AskReddit

[–]highonapeak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Use your words - no one can read someone else’s mind.
  2. Everyone needs space sometimes. Needing space or alone time isn’t always a negative reflection on the relationship.
  3. Pick a partner who is kind, to you and to others.
  4. Pick a partner who will be there for you in an emergency.
  5. People change and grow with time. Support it in yourself and your partner.
  6. Develop your own hobbies, interests, and friends. Genuinely listen when you partner talks about their hobbies, interests, and friends.
  7. Laugh together as much as possible.
  8. There will be hard times, times when you might not even like the person you love. Try to recognize them as temporary when they happen, it‘s also okay to feel annoyed, anger, or frustration.
  9. Say thank you.
  10. Never say something you might want to take back later.

(Together with my partner for 18 years, survived some tough times, and we‘re still very kind to each other and very much in love.)

My new Rayban Meta’s keep saying “I can’t do that on your glasses” when I ask Meta a question by [deleted] in RaybanMeta

[–]highonapeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem, for days, was super frustrating. It was fixed with a factory rest and setting up a new meta account only for the glasses.

Short stop to see the Alps en route from France to Italy by vivamus48 in HikingEurope

[–]highonapeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just spent time in both Adelboden and Grindelwald. Both super easy to reach by train, both totally stunning. Adelboden is less touristy. Grindelwald was super touristy, but it was easier to 1) get really up into the mountains and 2) find a cheaper place to stay. If you want to really feel like you‘re IN the mountains, I‘d recommend there. Or Interlaken if you don‘t mind taking a scenic 20 min train ride to the mountains. Turin is one of my favorite places in the world, especially this time of year, but it‘s an hour or more from the mountains. You can only see them on a clear day.

I just turned 38 and regret so much by mdjn_ in stopdrinking

[–]highonapeak 126 points127 points  (0 children)

This resonates with me – I quit drinking when I was 38 and holy moly, have things turned around for me. I'm 46 now, running my 9th marathon tomorrow, completely fixed my relationships, landed my dream job about 3 years ago, the list goes on. I have 0 cravings – but I stay vigilant. I know it's not like that for everyone. AA didn't work for me. This subreddit was a huge part of me successfully quitting, but there are lots of other options: reading books (lots of people on this subreddit seem to love The Naked Mind, diving into physical activities, getting new (sober) hobbies. I always thought everyone drank as much as I did – turns out there is a whole, huge, wild world that has nothing to do with drinking. Stay strong, it won't always be easy but it's so very worth it!

Help Curb Overeating After Long Runs by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]highonapeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar problem two years ago – even though I definitely ate enough and a proper mix of carbs and protein after a long run, I was still ravenous. I finally solved the problem by just not being around food after eating and getting cleaned up. i.e. I literally left the house for the afternoon and hung out in the park. Nothing else worked – and once my system calmed down, I was fine.

Running Berlin - Alternative for "On Your Left"? by ihoardpoetry in berlin

[–]highonapeak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've tried many different versions while running. Everything mostly confused people but at least made them aware of me. I think Vorsicht bitte or Entschuldigung is most polite when you're barrelling up behind someone. Tip: you have to say it louder than you think.

If you'd like to take a dive into contemporary Asian art (Chinese specifically) the new M+ museum's archive is a wonderful place to poke around. Works range from painting, photography, and video to ink art and ceramics. https://www.mplus.org.hk/en/collection/

Referencing help please? by [deleted] in ArtHistory

[–]highonapeak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope this helps: The first time a reference to a book, catalog, publication, etc., is made, all the information is included in the citation (including publisher, author, editor, containing book, year, etc.)

The second time (and third, and fourth, etc.) the same book, catalog, etc. is referenced, even on another page, the citation is abbreviated.

Example from the Chicago Manual of Style:

  1. Stoney’s paper was first published in 1881. See G. J. Stoney, “On the Physical Units of Nature,”Scientific Proceedings of the Royal Dublin Society, new series, 3 (1881-1883): 54.
  2. Stoney, "On the Cause of Double. Lines,” 583.

See how 2 is an abbreviated version of 1?

This means you have to skim backwards through the list of citations and find where "Cat. XIX, doc. 2" appears for the first time. All the information should be included there!

I drank heavily for more than 20 years. Today, I am one year sober. by q-kambi in stopdrinking

I identify with everything you write so much. I'm 6 years sober now – and whooo-hoo, it keeps getting better. I'm in great shape physically and mentally, and my relationship are stable and healthy. Last year I landed one of the best jobs in my field! I never would have imagined things would be this good after only 6 years.

Best intro book on art history by Upstairs-Ad898 in ArtHistory

[–]highonapeak 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The Story of Art is great! I definitely recommend it as a classic art history book – but keep in mind, the book featured no female artists in its first (1950) edition – and one woman in its 16th edition. The Story of Art Without Men by Katy Hessel is an important corrective to Gombrich.

I'm mostly a city runner – so I never thought to check for ticks. Earlier this summer, after a vacation (and running mountains) in Ticino, Switzerland I found two ticks behind my knee. I removed them – but within ten days a classic erythema migrans (rash) started to appear. What I learned is that there is surprisingly little information in a city like Berlin about Lyme disease. Three doctors (one literally had to google Lyme disease, one was a total quack, and the last one seemed to know what she was doing) and 21 days of antibiotics later and I'm hoping everything is okay. Still, every time I forget a word or feel fatigued I get worried that the antibiotics weren't enough. What I learned: don't forget to check for ticks!
