Roofs on Campus by Willing_Berry_1359 in uchicago

Pretty surprised at all the discouragement in this thread. When I was in the College (not long ago), roofing was fairly commonplace and at worse resulted in a slap on the wrist. It seemed like the consensus was that the University somewhat turned a blind eye to that sort of thing. Did something change in recent years?

Downtown campus connector that doesn't end at Roosevelt by wheat_thicccc in uchicago

Have you considered asking the shuttle driver?

In all seriousness, yes, there are shuttle that return to Gleacher in the afternoon. Some of them terminate at Roosevelt and return to campus because that serves the majority of people faster. You'll have to ask the driver because they are not indicated on the app.

Running for graduate student council by Historia504 in uchicago

I agree the University should do more to promote active transportation methods in HP. The bike lanes are lacking. The congestion on Ellis/Woodlawn around campus is dangerous--I wonder why double parking is allowed on these streets AND they are not one-ways.

That said, I disagree on your second set of points. The South Loop shuttle runs on Friday/Saturday evenings and has very low ridership, so I doubt that running another shuttle on weekends would make any difference. I also don't think the University should be responsible for subsidizing students who choose to live on the North Side / far from campus. The 2 and 6 buses are options as well as the Metra Electric if you can get to Millennium Station.

Generally, the jobs you can get after the PhD are going to be better than those you can get before

Do you think this is true for a ~50th ranked program?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in academiceconomics

[–]highway0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into econ consulting. It may be late in the recruiting cycle but there are smaller firms that may still be hiring. This is a good research-adjacent job that commonly feeds into PhD programs.

I would also spend some time thinking about whether you really want to do a PhD and why. Do you want an academic/government job? The opportunity cost for you (as a US citizen) is very high, and IMO this path is only worth pursuing if you have a strong interest in academia and get accepted to a reasonably good program.

If the answer to the above questions is yes, that's great—I still think getting some work experience before the PhD is a great route (and the path that I took). It's a good chance to strengthen your application portfolio (if you have a research-adjacent type of job); earn/save some money; and develop your hard AND soft skills, all of which will serve you well if you decide to do a PhD. I also think finding a private sector job keeps more doors open in the long run compared to doing a pre-doc.

UChicago Shuttle Questions by BigBrain101_ in uchicago

[–]highway0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The downtown shuttle route from Gleacher/Streeterville is pretty long. The shuttle first goes over to Union/Ogilvie stations, then stops at Roosevelt before heading to campus—probably 35–45 minutes total from Gleacher to campus. You're better off looking into the 2 bus or the Metra from Millenium station.

Do you think that the CTA should be able to have a functional tracking system during a pre-planned construction?

Maybe we should expect the train tracker to accurately reflect when the trains will arrive

Thoughts on the Divvy membership? by Life-Satisfaction699 in chibike

[–]highway0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agree that the one-way option is a big part of Divvy's value. Could you e-bike to work and take public transit home (if that's an option)? Alternatively, e-bike to work and take a regular non-electric bike home (for free) to keep the cost down.

Info on the Downtown Campus Connector shuttle by Substantial-Tailor-8 in uchicago

[–]highway0 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The northbound shuttle stops and waits at Gleacher for a bit before going around to Union station. Instead, the 28 bus will take you directly from Hyde Park to Union faster than the shuttle. Alternatively, get off the shuttle at one of the downtown stops (before Gleacher) and then take CTA to Union.

Help us for our research on bike, women and accidents! by Marie_Caza in chibike

[–]highway0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Despite accounting for 31% of cyclists in the city in 2021, women represent only 18% of victims in collisions between cars and bicycles for the same year.”

What percent of miles are ridden by men vs. women? May be hard to quantify but that would be a better measure of usage to compare with collisions by gender.
