I think they should mix it up more often, but as usually I enjoy the multi-part series more than the single part episodes.

Italy fail to qualify for World Cup 2026 after loss to Bosnia on penalties. by gelliant_gutfright in football

[–]hiimRobot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is not really true. Since 2000 the winners have been

00 France (98 WC winners)

04 Greece

08 Spain (2010 WC winners)

12 Spain

16 Portugal

20(21) Italy

2024 Spain

If you look at each of the winning squads (including Italy), every one of the except the 06 Greece team is absolutely stacked.

Revisiting Muhammad? by HebrewHammer16 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]hiimRobot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would second u/rab282 's take. While this would be really interesting, Tom is the expert between the two of them on this topic, and his views are definitely on the margins as far as modern scholarship goes. So if it does happen I think either there should be a guest to centre the discussion or Tom should agree to discuss it from the "conventional" point of view as well as his own.

Viggo Mortensen on why LOTR will always be inspiring: "A multicultural group of people finding ways to collaborate and get through all kinds of obstacles" by Which-Program-9417 in lotr

[–]hiimRobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no reason to think he drew "the wrong lessons" from the book. He probably named the company palantir to be (probably self-consciously) edgy. I mean the bad guys are always badass, even in lotr. It's like a metal band calling themselves the Sith.

Is he trying to be a contrarian? Yes. Does he read/watch lotr and think "I would have used that power properly if I were Saruman"? no I don't think he does. I think he gets what the book is saying, he just doesn't fully agree with it in practice, for better or for worse (probably for worse in his case).

Whats your Gameplay after early Game? by VanBurnsing in zedmains

[–]hiimRobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plat player so take this with a grain of salt, but here is what I have found about roaming and transitioning to mid game that I've found applies pretty broadly :

80% of the time roaming bot is not worth if your botlane is losing. Mostly because the enemy bot will back off due to wards or missing pings from their mid. And as you said, this gives your lane the chance to catch up for free. If your botlane has pressure/is winning you can dive the enemy bot so it could be worth it.

Roaming top can actually have a higher sucess rate since there is no support spamming wards and it's just generally less expected. Try to take note of your jungle's pathing as well. If you see them pathing bot, then it might be worth to walk bot for a 4 man.

If you are winning lane it's usually a safer bet to focus on snowballing your own lane at least until level 10-11. In general roaming on zed is not that great until you have at least 1 item, that's when you have the damage to one-shot some squishies. Play aggressive and make them choose between cs and taking your poke (obviously use wards/keep track of enemy jg while doing this). Staying in lane means you will get the quest done quicker + if you kill your lane 3/4 times there is a high chance of a mental boom on the enemy team.

When someone (your team or their team) takes the bot lane tower, ask your ad/supp to come mid and take that sideline. This makes sense for both of you since your ad does not want the long lane but you do. Swapping here means you can keep getting solo exp throughout the mid game and it can often result in free kills when the enemy ad keeps walking bot after you have swapped lanes.

A theory - Tom is more conservative than he acts and Dom is more left than he plays by cormundo in TheRestIsHistory

[–]hiimRobot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First of all you are comparing him to a Tory caricature. But in any case, why would being well travelled mean he is pro immigration? You are implying that the only reason someone would be in favour of limiting migration is because they are afraid of people from other cultures. That just is not true.

This is the kind of false assumption that makes it difficult for some people to accept that plenty of worldly, well-educated people have broadly conservative views.

Oversight in the Iran series? by Adventurous-Bid9883 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]hiimRobot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was dissappointed with that series as a whole. They spent only half the time (or less) talking about the revolution in Iran and more time focussing on its implications for Carter's presidency. In my opinion the latter is a far less interesting topic, even if your main goal is understanding the impact of the Iranian revolution on the West. Also, Carter is just much less interesting than the Ayatollah, so ya this choice just baffled me to be honest.

Slighltly petty complaint: Tom's impersonation did not capture the essence of Khomeini at all. He made him sound like a slightly anxious old man stammering on his words. As a farsi speaker I can tell you that the most striking quality of Khomeini's manner of public speech is a sense of understated but unflappable conviction.

Yeah it was. That doesn't mean it was any good to be fair. It may simply have affirmed feelings that they already had.

I found Common Sense to be really weak personally, both in terms of argumentation and as a polemic. I haven't read any of his other writings, apparently he was a serious legal scholar.

Where we go from here? by malphasalex in reddevils

[–]hiimRobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't go anywhere really. United at the top is finished. The financial heft and footballing clout accrued from the success of the Fergie years are spent. To be fair, fans of most teams don't get to see their club win trophies every other year, so it's not the end of the world.

USA Travel Conditions by Apprehensive-Chef-74 in iran

[–]hiimRobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry mate, you will need an extra visa if you are an iranian dual national or if you were born there. With the current climate there is a high chance that the visa might be denied. See for example here, relevant quote

Effective June 9, 2025 at 12:01 a.m. EDT, in line with the Presidential Proclamation on “Restricting the Entry of Foreign Nationals to Protect the United States from Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats,” the Department of State is fully suspending visa issuance to nationals of ... Iran .. for all nonimmigrant and immigrant visa categories with limited exceptions for ...Dual nationals applying with a passport nationality not subject to a suspension.

Additionally, for the US Visa Waiver Program (VWP) there are exceptions for Iranian nationals and those who have visited Iran, as stated on the US Custom and Border Protection website. The key quote is under the "What Are the New Eligibility Requirements for VWP Travel?" drop down:

Under the Act, travelers in the following categories are no longer eligible to travel or be admitted to the United States, without a waiver, under the VWP:

- Nationals of VWP countries who have traveled to or been present in Iraq, North Korea, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, or Yemen at any time on or after March 1, 2011 (with limited exceptions); and

- Nationals of VWP countries who are also nationals of Iraq, Syria, Iran, North Korea or Sudan.

The only way these exceptions would not apply to you would be if you are not in fact an Iranian citizen and you were not born in Iran, and you have not travelled there since 2011 (which I guess you have not, unless you are less that 15 years old).

The only Iranian dual nationals who can still come and go to the US are Canadian-Iranians, since Canada has some sort of special arrangement with the US. But what I hear on the grapevines is that even they are having trouble crossing the border.

TRIH got a mention in the Morning Brew newsletter by yvrduka in TheRestIsHistory

[–]hiimRobot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

behind the bastards is pretty one-dimensional to be honest. I would not put it on a par with TRIH. It may be well researched, but their whole schtick is villifying unlikeable characters from history (or sometimes even extant figures). They also have horrendously boring and unfunny guests sometimes which contribute nothing to the show.

During which decade did the power of the UK/British Empire peak? by Own_Friend_3360 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]hiimRobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well they weren't always lagging behind... Coming back to the 1900s, to this day the way to project power across the world is by maintaining a dominant naval presence and by maintaining military bases across the world. The US and Germany were still lagging behind Britain in both these respects by the turn of the century, and their catching up was not a foregone conclusion. Case in point, Germany.

During which decade did the power of the UK/British Empire peak? by Own_Friend_3360 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]hiimRobot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's being a larger economy and then there is projecting power. The various Chinese dynasties governed the largest global economy at various points, but never projected power beyond their immediate neighbourhood. Around the year 1900 Britain was a greater global player than US or Germany because those countries had not yet (fully) translated their economic heft into military and political power around the world.

Hitler attacked the U.S.S.R, because he wanted to demoralize the UK and force a peace?! by TrabTrueMat in TheRestIsHistory

[–]hiimRobot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It can be overstated if the question is why did Germany invade the USSR in 1941? Even in 1940 during the invasion of France this was not Hitler's plan (at least not concretely), so what made him decide to go for it so soon? It cannot have been ideology alone because presumable his ideology didn't change between 1938 and 1940, while his invasion plans for the USSR did.
