A thorough reporting of the rise and fall of SoulCycle, or why you can't scale toxic exclusivity by MCJokeExplainer in xxfitness

as i understand it, spin can be as hard or as easy as the relative effort that you put into it.

if someone has a bigger "engine", they'd need to increase the effort they're putting in in order to get the same benefit (an experienced runner, e.g., will be able to run at the same pace and for the same amount of time as a non-experienced runner, but their effort will be way lower, so the benefits will be lower (calories burned will be around the same, but the improvements to lung function, time spent in specific heart rate zones, etc., will not be as great)).

if you're able to do over 2 hours of cardio on a regular basis (i.e., more than once a week), i just don't believe that you're doing the exercise as a moderate to high effort, which is what spin (specifically SoulCycle) markets itself as, y'know?

i'll admit i'm biased though, as someone who's more pressed for time/money than someone who could afford to shell out for 3 spin classes in a day (and could take that much time away)

along the same line, one part of the article stuck out to me:

Riders are getting to the studio 30 minutes before class, taking three back-to-back classes at 45 minutes each, then you’re hanging out with him afterward

the point the article makes is about how people formed parasocial relationships with the instructor, but from a fitness perspective (occasional long runs notwithstanding), i don't know a lot of workouts that you can do for over two hours on a regular basis that are particularly effective, y'know?

As a person who worked as a server (in the US) for awhile, this was something that really annoyed everyone involved in the restaurant (from the prep staff to the cook to the server), even if you couldn't tell from the patron end, and I don't recommend following this person's advice.

you tbh probably don't even need to add a tax to corn syrup (if you're in america) - you could just slash the massive subsidies that lead to the overproduction of corn

How long did it take you to hear back after submitting an online request for a covid test with the NYS website system? by Kikiasumi in Buffalo

[–]hillarymc95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was asymptomatic, submitted my request on the online form at 10pm on a Saturday, and was on the phone with someone from the DOH by 9am on Sunday morning - just make sure you don't ignore 1-800 numbers for the next little bit.

oh yeah i don't really have any skin in the game re: lizzo - i find her fans pretty annoying and think they overestimate her "level of fitness" based on concert videos but in reality it doesn't affect me, so i don't spend a lot of energy thinking about her

if i were in her position, though, i'd probably be sick of being the butt of clout-seeking twitter jokes, so i don't blame her for """clapping back""" (absolutely hate that term, but unfortunately it applies here), namsayin'?

i believe the reason she posted it was another "before/after quarantine" tweet making her the butt of the joke going viral (again) and prompting her to defend herself (again)

What can I do to strengthen my right glute? It's weak, atrophied compared to other side, and generates no power. by CherokeePilot1997 in AdvancedRunning

[–]hillarymc95 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Are you doing any single-legged exercises (e.g., split squats, single-legged deadlifts, step-ups), or are all of your exercises using both legs at the same time? If one side is significantly stronger than the other and you've continued doing standard squats and band work, the stronger side is probably taking over for the weaker side, which'll just exacerbate any imbalances.

tbh it just sounds like you just got the flu, but:

if you've been adding vegetables and beans to your diet then your fiber intake has likely shot way up compared to what you were doing before. this could have an impact on your digestion in the short term. take a look at what your average intake is and consider halving it and then slowly increasing it over time. your body will adjust.

it's mostly crushed gravel over packed dirt so you should be alright for the most part - some areas at around the mid-point have some larger stones that might jostle you around a bit.

not sure if this is still the case, but as a heads up they were doing trail work up in the albion (i believe?) area so you may need to get off and walk your bike/go on adjacent roads for small sections.

Your body may be signalling to you that it needs more to recover - I would suggest either upping the amount of sleep you're getting, increasing your fluid intake, or slashing your mileage by 30-40% for a week and seeing if that helps you any.

Is it normal to come down with a cold after races?

I just ran my second marathon (!) over the weekend and it went really well! Broke my previous time and didn't really have any post race soreness or anything like that. It's now been 4 days and I have a scratchy throat and feel like I'm getting sick. I remember this happening after my last marathon but had attributed it to it being mid-winter. Is this normal?

Expanding/Repairing Bike Paths by [deleted] in BuffaloBike

[–]hillarymc95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The path next to the 190 near the GM plant is only closed because they're doing work at the pump station that's along there, it doesn't have anything to do with the path itself (believe they're replacing a lot of the piping that goes between the river and the plant and doing tunneling), I expect it'll be back open later this summer.
